Fall 2013 & Spring/Summer 2014 TV Catch-All

So my roommate taught me that I enjoy certain reality TV shows after all, and tonight they aired the new season of Inkmaster. However, there's a bit of a twist to it. Most of the contestants (professional tattoo artists all competing for a big wad of cash) are already pretty damn dramatic, but now they're specifically doing a season dedicated to rivalries. The contestants come in pairs, two artists that, for whatever reason, cannot stand the other.

The drama may drive me away from this season, but even so, even though I'm not the sort to get a tattoo myself, I friggin' love seeing the artwork on this show. There is some damn good talent on tap here... usually. The end of season four had three really top notch artists going head to head, and man was it gorgeous.

But this season, there's a lot of not-so-good art, and it has my roommate and I thinking that they went for the drama over the skill. While there's a couple of people on there I'm eager to see more works of, there are some people that can't be shoved out soon enough. LT is not only a rookie, but he just doesn't have the nerves for the competition. He talks a big talk, but he probably has the least amount of skill on tap. Two of the rivals are brothers, and the eccentric one with the heart and piercing on his cheek is a real asshole compared to the other. A loud mouth and always quick to criticize others. Then there's Betty Paige, who is just thriving with being on camera, always talking even when she shouldn't be, and is just looking to stab in whatever exposed flesh is available. I hope they tear her art to shreds. She wants to be Inkmaster's first female winner, but the other three are much more deserving in regards to attitude. I mean holy crap.

In regards to who was cast out:

Spoiler:

I believe her name was Caroline, and I'm honestly sad. I actually didn't want to see any of the three on the chopping block go, as I felt they had more talent to showcase. I was expecting LT to be kicked off. But in truth, I think Caroline getting booted was an inevitability anyway. I'm just kind of disappointed I didn't get to understand the rivalry between her and... quiet girl... more. But one thing is for certain: she kept saying "experience this" and "experience that". If you've got experience doing something wrong for ten years, you're still doing something wrong.

Despite all the drama, and despite how despicable a number of these contestants are, I do like this show. Thus far, however, I'm most interested in the returning rivals and the two guys whose rivalry evidently began on Instagram, partially because they were making the least amount of drama (and, truth told, most of the drama wasn't even between any of the rivals!).

Joy has once again returned to my life with the premier of The League. Next to Archer it is my favorite show on TV.

Aw crud. Forgot to set my season pass. To the interwebs!

Manhattan is getting really good! There are just tons of well-written and complex characters.

Is the overall series as good as the pilot? I had never even heard of it until I read your post. I put it on an hour ago and was riveted. I imagined stunned executives handing over a blank check for the rest of the series. Does it say this good? How have I never heard of this, but I have seen numerous blog posts about Outlander?

Historically it's off kilter enough to make me twitch on some scenes, but the overarching story seems to be on a good track.

1st episode is really good. Not quite good enough to get me to sign up for Cinemax but it's good.

Ya this is surprisingly good. There's only 3 episodes though on Cinemax. Not sure what's going on with the delay but I'm liking it. Especially the music. Reminds me of Kubrick.

I have the same problem with Masters of Sex. Mostly it's the dialogue. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels like the phrases and banter match our current time so closely that it doesn't seem correct for the time period.

Incidentally we saw episode 2. I'm still on board but I had my first big "did that really happen" moment.

Spoiler:

The plutonium courier.

Falling Skies started off pretty bad this season but got better with every episode. Next season will be it's last and I am pretty happy with that. It's best to not drag it out too much and end it while it's still good so I'm looking forward to next summer. Falling Skies fills my cheesy SciFi void that Stargate once held.

Yeah, there are lots of "did that really happen"s in the show. I don't know much about it, so I choose not to worry about it.

A&E may have created a whole new version of "Browncoats" with their decision to cancel Longmire. If only the internet had been a prevalent when Firefly was around.

So where's the handy-dandy 2014-15 fall premier guide? This summer has been a pretty horrible drought (True Blood? MasterChef? Wilfred?) of shows that the wife and I watch, but it looks like things are picking up VERY quickly and we'll soon have too much TV to watch at one time. I am excite!

(Also, I know there's such a thing as a "thread necro" but what about a "person necro"? Nice to be back, great to see things are chugging along, etc, etc...)

FYI, Garfunkle and Oates on IFC is hilarious.

I'm totally going to start it on Sept 1.

*checks calendar*

sh*t.

Uh, this weekend.

There's always http://www.pogdesign.co.uk/cat/ (once you've set your time zone).

You know how bad of an idea the new Fox reality show, Utopia looked? Well, they really Foxed it all up with a cast of mostly dysfunctional assholes. Seriously, if I was cast on that show, I would have left the morning of the second day. I will be amazed if someone is not shot with a compound bow.

Seriously, out of the 14 people on the show, at lest 6 of them should have been screened out of the process completely. And of the "normal" folks, I don't see anyone prepared to deal with the level of dysfunction that exists there. Pour alcohol on top, and it is a ticking time bomb.

Seriously, day two had an impromptu court hearing to see if they were going to kick out a guy after fights and sexually harassing women while he was drunk. One of the women he tried to kiss (who is a hunter that bought one of the compound bows) was so drunk that she was evacuated for alcohol poisoning and then allowed back in.

I wasn't recording it, but we stumbled upon the court scene, so we ended up watching it to see what happened to cause it and the result. Not a good idea.

You realize fox picked these people for exactly the reasons you are decrying right? That's the nature of reality television and why it's all a horrible waste of time.

When I heard the commercial on the radio where the genius lady pointed out that no American male president had ever balanced the budget, I knew that show was going to be a winner. Somebody need a civics class to learn how budgets are set.

As opposed to American female presidents?

Right. That's what she was saying was that she would be better in charge because she's a woman.

The point is, Congress passes the budget, the president just signs it. He might have input, but it's not his to "balance".

Well.... this premiers on Syfy next month and I went to school with the main guy who was a couples years younger than me and the town they focus on was about 30 minutes north of my old highschool. The town is Jasper, Alabama and is primarily known for a being a center for mafia hitmen and rednecks. And if you want to pronounce the city name like someone actually from that town, best to say it as Jash-pur.

Reminds me of this awesome documentary:

We're perilously close to Fall 2014 in this Summer 2014 thread!

Late response but I started this season of the League. TeflAndre is so good, I wish they kept him forever!

Wrong thread, ccesarano.

Well shucks.

Nothing to see here.
