iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

Just ran out of space on my 16gig iPad. Is there a way to see the how much space an app takes ON the iPad? I know you can look at it via iTunes when synced up.

When you have your iPad connected to your computer, click on the iPad under Devices in iTunes, click on the Apps tab across the top. This gives you a list of your apps. You can sort that list by size, and it shows you how much each app takes up.

I know. I was wondering if there was a way you can manage files like that ON the iPad without being synced.

Duh. That capitalization of ON was lost on ME.

So far, I'm not seeing what the big deal is about Swords & Sorcery yet either. So far I'm just walking thru screen after screen, doing nothing, and reading text apparently written by a teenager. Hopefully it gets better as you progress. Maybe it's just not my cup o' tea.

You didn't like Limbo very much, did you? I may be completely off base with this comparison, but I get a somewhat similar vibe from Swords & Sorcery so far. It may very well just not be your cup o' tea. On the other hand, I found Limbo to be pretty underwhelming, and I'm quite enjoying this one so far. Maybe that has more to do with my expectations than anything. Limbo was hyped to the moon and failed to deliver (for me). I went into this one blindly.

If you are like me and tend to play most iPhone/iPad games with no sound or your own music, you need to make an exception for Swords & Sorcery. The music is incredible, and I'm finding sound design to be the most important aspect of the atmosphere this game seeks to create. Play this game with headphones. Likewise, you're not going to get much out it if you're playing on the subway or any other noisy/distracting commute. This has clearly been designed as something meant to grab your attention and suck you into the "experience".

For the first time ever in a handheld game, I had a genuine emotional response while playing. It was a bit of panic, actually. For that alone, I'd say $5 well spent.

Spoiler:

When the spectre materialized and started chasing me after picking up the Megatome, something about the way the visuals and sound came together just worked. I felt my eyes widen and my heart rate increase.

If this is coming across as some glowing recommendation, allow me to correct that misconception now. This is a cautious recommendation with a simple warning that Swords & Sorcery will not work for everyone. Many (possibly most) people will probably play through the part I spoilered above and think nothing special of it, but some people are going to love this game. The mere fact that I feel the need to use spoiler tags for an iPad game should say something. I'll be eager to find out this weekend if the rest of the game grabs me in the same manner.

Dyni, you have a hell of a memory, if you remember me not liking Limbo. That's true, I didn't like it except for the cool art style.

I'm not writing S&S off yet, I'll keep playing it a while. And yes, I'm playing it with headphones, and the music is indeed good.

I played the first "session" of Sword and Sorcery last night and kinda fell in love with it. There's not much to the game, really, but the feeling of playing it is just so good. Its sessions are short enough bursts so that I didn't get bored of wandering and looking at all the pretty things and listening to the amazing music. It's relaxing, with small moments of fear or triumph thrown in to the mix.

Anyone using Skyfire for iPad or iPhone? Do you use it all the time, or just when you want to see Flash?

Also, a friend of mine suggested Oplayer for watching avi movies - it supports USB file transfer, and there is a lite version (on iPhone; havent checked iPad yet). Gonna check that out.

Using Skyfire for iPad and iPhone. Generally just fire it up when I want to watch some video. It has some nice features that Safari doesn't, but I find that it has too much clutter in the menubars to make me want to use it all the time.

I picked up a 32g first gen iPad yesterday and it's a blast. With the iPhone I went overboard buying tons of games that just piled up. Not this time! What's the best all- round racing game for iPad? I'd prefer too easy over too difficult.

I think Real Racing 2 HD is the best racing game out right now.

+1

After that, I like NFS Shift

Solid advice. Real Racing 2 is awesome.

Played another S&S:EP episode/chunk. Awesome.

Not sure what everyone else is using for sketching, but Procreate is free today. After messing around with a lot of the free drawing programs out there in App-land I was shocked by the quality of this app. Blending, layers, brushes... I'm a horrible artist but I love to play.

Loving Osmos. You're a ball that eats other balls while trying not to get eaten by balls. Balls.

Says $7.99 on the app store.

Not sure what the price is right now, but I got it for 0.99 on sale and it's a steal. Great game for occasions when I want to play something relaxing

Yeah, that's crushingly disappointing.

I'm really getting tired of these fast sales that are over by the time you hear about them. Very annoying.

I never get these, but I got this one! Thanks for the tip Rezzy.

Luxor: Amun Rising HD is 90% off at 99 cents.

Do I need to mention the HD on this thread?

Man my family is loving the iPad.

I was lucky enough to have this on my AppShopper wishlist, so I grabbed it in time. I suggest you do add it to your lists, because it's become my favorite sketching program on my iPad. I have about 9 of them, and for some reason this app's UI clicks with me. I'm sorry some of you didn't get it for free.

Yeah, sorry for the late heads-up on this deal. I'm a new iPad owner/AppShopper User so I had been wading through dozens of crap-apps and didn't get to that one until later that day.

EDIT: On that 'note' I just picked up Notes Plus for $1.99 (66% off, it was down to .99 once according to AppShopper, but I still have over $40 of credit so I'm a little less cautious...) because I'd really like it if this tablet could replace the dozens of scribble pads I have laying around my work and home and this seems to accomplish that quite nicely. My pogo stylus shipped yesterday because 'writing' with my finger feels ridiculous.

I thought I lost my ipad yesterday. Anyone use any of the "find my phone/ipad" apps around? All I'm really looking for is something that will make noise and track the ipad when asked.

Keep us informed, I always thought that writing on iPad wasn't feasible at all, but now I'm at least curious.

I have a Pogo, but I replaced it with a Boxwave stylus and I love it.

The Pogo has a capacitive foam tip with a coarse grain that makes it feel uncomfortable to me when I use it. The BoxWave has a rubbery tip that glides nicely, feeling more like a ballpoint pen to me than the Pogo does.

The Pogo is also much less substantial feeling to me than the BoxWave. The lengths are similar (for my versions anyway), but the BoxWave is closer to feeling like a comfortable pen. The weight is nice too.

My biggest reason for liking the BoxWave over the Pogo is that it works at an angle. With my Pogo, I have to have the stylus nearly perpendicular to the iPad surface. The BoxWave lets me use angles I would use if I were actually writing.

I'm probably going to pass the one I have down to my wife and get the BoxWave 'Styra', which is a longer device that also sports a pen inside. Can't get much closer to feeling like a real pen than that.

I tend to use drawing apps (along with my 3 year old) with the stylus, but I've taken notes using Penultimate, Awesome Note, and Notes Plus. All of these are good for there own reasons.

Apple's app seems to work OK. I've never actually left my phone behind, but I did test the "make your phone ring" utility. (I declined to test remote wiping.)

Where were you two days ago when I was hemming and hawing between those two products? Luckily Amazon is great with returns in case it doesn't pan out.

Edit: Speaking of returns. A little off topic for the thread, but the GF and I both returned our smart covers to Best Buy yesterday. Turns out we never take our tablets out of the Targus 360 cases. A little bulky, but solid and offers more comfortable resting positions when lounging. With it I can throw the iPad into my overstuffed work-bag and carry it to meetings without too much worry.

I was just talking to someone yesterday about how the app store pricing totally changes my mental calculation on things. If there was something at a store for $8 bucks that got such great reviews and I saw a use for, I'd probably buy it without hesitation. On the app store, however, the price gives me pause.
