iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

Can anyone recommend any "pc quality" western RPGs? (Preferably turn-based. I'm not really a fan of virtual sticks).

Oh yes indeed. Avernum: Escape from the Pit HD, Avernum 6 HD and Avadon: The Black Fortress are all classic turn-based isometric RPGs. They'll keep you busy for a long time.

Seconded. These games are fantastic.

Many thanks!

Dumb question: Which Avernum should I start with? And is VI a compilation of 6 episodes stitched together?

Avadon : Black Fortress is super accesible, and the story is self contained. Avernum is another series and Avernum 6 is the sixth installment, haven't played those but you'd start with Avernum: Escape from the pit.

So anyway, as a newbie I liked Avadon a lot, although I switched iPads and games aren't very good on my iPad mini, but I'll definitely go back to it when I get a new big size ipad : )

Black fortress freezes at the start of every combat round for me:/ now i remember why I stopped playing it.

Hunters 2 was damn good fun though!

This looks nice, may have to dip into it.

I've been playing Spiderweb Software games for nearly 2 decades, starting way back with Exile: Escape From The Pit (the Exile series was later renamed Avernum when the games were remade with the new engine).

They have never disappointed.

In fact, I think some of the initial concept for Skylines in (shameless plug) Bioshock Inifinite came out of a discussion of movement mechanics that I enjoyed in Blades of Exile/Avernum - the conveyor belt factories.

Note that these games are not visual stunners, but if you can look past that, they are a ton of fun to play.

Question for those of you who got 3G or 4G with your iPad. Have you enjoyed having it? Has it been a positive or just another way to be tethered to the Internet?

Well, I've tethered mine to my phone a few times and it's been nice. I'm waiting to see if there's going to be a new iPad before I upgrade my "new iPad" to get more storage. I'll be tempted to get one with built-in LTE since I can add it to my VZW account for just $10/mo. I just have to justify the upfront radio expense. Although by typing it out, given that the only time I'm not around a wifi hotspot is when I'm hiking/biking/backpacking and have zero chance of having my iPad I'll probably just stick to tethering to my phone.

So, if you commute on public transportation and can't [be bothered to] tether I'd think it would definitely be worth consideration, depending on your 'pad usage.

Probably not a very helpful reply.

I use it a lot, but then again, I use it for work when I'm often in places without wifi or the wifi is terrible (i.e. courthouses). Plus, it's a deductible business expense.

Adjusted for me:

This brings up one of my questions for the universe, why isn't the original Might & Magic series available on touchscreen? Isles of Terra (M&M III) and World of Xeen (M&M IV & V) seems like a license to print money if ported to iOS.

I guess the announcement for turn based M&M X is a hopeful sign...

It's Unity based so there's the possibility of a port.

I'm surprised no one posted this yet.

I'm very psyched to have this on a tablet. I might actually play it now.

Yeah, I've still yet to fire up my PC copy.

This. I heard great things, but never got around to checking it out on pc.

I'm in this boat too, which is really sad. With its short play time, it does seem more suited to tablet gamin' than "sit at my PC" gamin'.

I wonder if their new Frozen Endzone game will come out for PC and tablet at the same time?

I'm guilty of this too

I registered long ago for their beta access, got my copy, and then realized they actually want people to submit feedback on a timely basis. I love me some FS but that sounded like work, so I bugged out.

I can't deduct it, but my use case is basically that. I read a lot of tech books on it and I don't want to have to tether every time I want to sync a book or download a new book. I signed up for the Safari offline book service and it seems like it would be even more handy with the ability to browse books at any time.

I use mine for browsing and the occasional small download (books, mostly) so the 1gb/month SIM I have is great. My OG iPad was WiFi, but I am really glad I went with the 3G option when I upgraded. I don't have to sit next to a certain window at work, go to a crappy coffee shop for free WiFi anymore.

Tethering is all well and good, but by the time I have sorted it out, I may as well have just used my phone instead.

Not having 3G is one of my problems with my launch level Nexus 7,and probably why I do t use it as much as I would like as a result.

I don't understand this. I literally press one toggle widget and my devices connect.

Just got an iPad! Tagging for future gaming/app goodness.

Okay, beyond excited for this!

If you guys haven't already seen that then you must not be following Pocket Tactics. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!

PT and Touch Arcade are why I need an iPad with more storage.

PT Frozen Synapse source.

Good to hear that's finally out. There was a Eurogamer review a few months ago for it which had some good praise for it. Will give it a try soon.

I have an iPhone, so it takes a bit longer. A quick google search may as well be on the phone.

The other thing I find is that the iPad gets a stronger 3G signal than the iPhone, so if I am on the lower ground floor at work, I am far more likely to get a signal on the iPad.

That makes sense, especially considering the thread. The way I see it is if my usage is enough to justify the radio cost and additional monthly service fee then it's also enough to "justify" tethering. Like you say a quick Google search I'd just use my phone. Like I've already said though I'm an "always wifi-ed" telecommuter so I'm probably not the most in-tuned for seeing the need for two "Internet anywhere" devices.
