iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

I just picked up Stargate SG1: Unleashed because I loved the show and they got the original actors for voice work. I have missed Jack O'Neil and Carter, etc. So far it has been an ok game. Not great but it makes me fondly remember the show so it is well worth it to me.

Is there a price? I've avoided double dipping on PC but the iPad is perfect for this.

Anyone wanting a faster, 'dumber' version of this could do a lot worse than Puzzle Saga, currently free, and a lot of fun.

Despite the name, and looks of the game at a glance, Super Stickman Golf 2 is a fantastic game for only .99 Theres tons of game there and replay value with the multiplayer. On the most recent episode of The Besties Podcast on Polygon.com they talk it up a bunch.

iPad get! Tagging this thread for future review.

I read this right after picking it up on PC. Crud. Really enjoying it, though!

This is the game I've been waiting for for about 20 years. Now if only someone would port it to PC so the controls would be good.

Even with the ipad control issues, I can see that this is what is finally going to topple Kingdom Rush as my most played iOS game.

I had no idea that this existed. Thanks farley!

Woot! is right. I'm in. Kingdom Rush is one of my favorite games for the Ipad.

thats great news, one of the best games i played on my ipad to date.

Anyone want to enable me on Block Fortress? Im concerned about the FPS elements of it, mainly the controls, but I like the overall concept.

Also, I'm really enjoying Clash of Clans. I'd say it's earned its Top Grossing title. Despite being Free to Play, they don't impose arbitrary limits on how much I can play in a day. I can constantly be attacking or tweaking my base defense if I want to. I bought a $5 pack of their in game currency more to say 'Good Job' than anything else.

I heartily endorse Block Fortress. The latest update fixed the floatiness of the controls, and I've been playing it every time I get a chance. There's a bit of a learning curve, and you won't make much progress until you've gotten high enough to be able to equip the plasma rifle and craft its no-reload mod. Once those two things are taken care of, the game really opens up and resources flow in easily. Gameplay breaks up nicely into chunks of 3-7 minutes, so it's a great for filling little gaps in your day.

So, first thing is, there are 3 rare resources which are used to add permenant upgrades to some blocks, turrets, specials (farms etc.). It is considered premium, in that you can buy it for real money. The only permenant thing is an Experience Doubler for .99 USD (if I remember the price right).

So, onto the game.

The first thing you do is pick a map. There are 2 per rare type (Green, Blue, White) - the 2 green maps are rolling hills, normal plains type terrains. The 2 blue maps feature water, and one of them, Tidal Cliffs, has seriously deep holes scattered in the map. The 2 white maps are snow based. Once you've picked a map and jump in, you have to pick a spot for your barracks, the central part of your base (not that you have to build around it...I'm getting there!).

The first phase is Build mode. You get a limited amount of resources (Money and something else...I have yet to figure out the secondary resource.) There is a minimap that shows the edge that the attack is coming from, and the direction. There are mines scattered around the maps, which, when loaded with a mine shaft or a mine driller, will add to the % chance of getting more rare minerals per round. You will always get at least 1 rare mineral per round. You also have to build your equipment, but only once. So, you have to budget for that too. Once you have everything built, and you're good with your equipment loadout, you press the minimap to begin the wave.

Now, you're in first person mode. You have to climb over obstacles (thankfully, no ladders needed - they help you climbimg speed, but not much else), your weapons and turrets have limited range, the whole FPS schtick. The latest update, as Mr. Crinkle said, took out a lot of the floatiness, so it's much more responsive. There are no ammo limits (you cannot run out of ammo, you just have to reload) which is nice, the weapons are pretty standard (Plasma weapons are OP as hell), and you can also carry blocks and turrets in your loadout, to add/replace as needed.

You also don't have to build around your barracks. The Power Block has a range (8 for the block, 2 or 3 for the addon) so, you can build anywhere. see some mines? build the mine shaft, a power block, cover it up and add turrets and viola! Mini expansion base. Defend it through the round, or you get nothing from that mine.

Once the round is over, you get some basic stats, along with some rare minerals. The upgrades to equipment, turrets and blocks isn't too bad, I think the most I've seen is 20, 10, 10 - maybe an hour at most starting from 0 resources to get everything for the upgrade. So, buying the minerals is more "I like you dev, here's my money". The upgrades also do not increase in price based on how many you've bought. So, the price always remains the same. Your level determines what you can use in the game, which is why I bought the experience doubler

All in all, I like it. The enemies are varied, and you do need to use some basic tactics (attack the back of the heavily armored ones, kill the bomb ones fast etc.) For what I paid, I got my money's worth, and I'm still playing the hell out of it.

Sounds awesome. Thanks guys I'll get it

So, apparently, two new strategy games just came out for the iPad. Has anyone tried these?

I had an eye on Medieval Merchants already: it looks interesting but I can't find anything about it online yet.

Anyone played Simcity on the iPad? The reviews are a bit mixed, but all the Simcity talk going on at the moment has given me the urge to play.

Strategy & Tactics: World War II was just released. Evidently it was being developed as a Hearts of Iron release, but they had that IP pulled from them.

I was told not to purchase Simcity for iPad because the interface is terrible.

Downloading it now. I'm not really sure what you get for free, but I think that it's nice that they let you try it (at all) for free and then just upgrade with an in app purchase if you like it.

SimCity on the iPad has serious interface issues. I tried to like it. I tried really, really hard. It's one of those titles that totally convinced me that porting mouse control and mapping them directly to touch just doesn't work. You have to design the UI for touch from the ground up.

He-Man for the iphone and iPad is free today. Go effing grab it. It's awesome.

First things to spend your resources on in Block Fortress:
-No-reload mod for the plasma rifle
-Self-powered mining drill
-Salvage for mining drill

After this, you can set up mining drills wherever the enemies won't be coming from, and blow them up between rounds if they're in the danger zone and rebuild them elsewhere for free. Note that I said drills...once you unlock those you'll only need mining shafts for the first few rounds. Once you've gotten those 3 upgrades, the game doesn't feel grindy any more. You can pay 2 bucks to just sidestep this phase. So, if you're enjoying the way it plays, it's 5 bucks to have the game, the XP doubler, and enough minerals to skip the grindy bit at the start.

Next priorities are:
-Detector mods for your preferred turrets
-An ID mod for your stimpack
-Self-powered mining shafts, so on new maps you can start the very first round with a plasma rifle

After you get the hang of things and have a couple of turret mods, you'll very easily be able to get up to waves in the 20s and 30s, and you'll have plenty of resources rolling in.

Thanks for the Simcity advice guys (and for saving me a fiver )

I grabbed this last night. I played it a bit before bed and I really like it. They give you a lot of content for free, so there is really no reason not to take a look at it if you like WW2 turn based strategy games.

So, how is Mech Warrior? The reviews on iTunes are very mixed.

I'll let you know once I get a chance to try, which will be after this weekend. Apparently no one else here can give it a thumbs up/down.

So I played for about an hour and completed the first three or four missions. And it's surprisingly bland. You command up to four mechs simultaneously and there isn't a whole lot of the micro-customization from a MW game that I expect, at least so far. The part that makes me want to stop, though, is that the interface is pretty klugey: the camera doesn't zoom where I want, selecting units is pretty annoying, and there doesn't seem to be a way to accurately control what your mechs are doing. They just kind of stumble from point to point and attack targets however they want. I'll play a few more missions but I'm not expecting it to grab me at this point.

More news on Playdek's Ascension: http://boardgamegeek.com/blogpost/18054/quick-news-future-of-playdeks-ascension-nshex-for

TLDR: Will continue to be supported until July 2014, and hopefully purchases made on it will be transitioned to Stoneblades new version

Already mentioned in the PAX story, but interesting enough to post here too: a (virtually complete) port of the recent XCom game is coming to iOS

Sounds like a really good fit to me

This news is super exciting. I hope that Civ 6 (or even 5) comes out on iOS eventually. I love the Civ games, but I don't have twelve consecutive hours to sit in front of the PC anymore.
