iPad Games (and Apps) Catch All

So I finally beat the first "level" of Super Hexagon! That game is so freaking addicting and hard haha.

Also, add me on GameCenter for Letterpress! My name on there is Vargeth.

As soon as I release my finger attempting that, the card moves instantly back into the pile arrayed across the center. Is there a specific place to drop them? Maybe it would work fine if I only had to discard 1, but 2 or more it fails. 7, like I must, it's really confused.

edit: ok, piece of crap. I had to use the little arrows to the sides of the cards when they're zoomed in, manually select each card with "choose card" until there were seven. Why it doesn't just show each card being set into a "to be discarded" pile then confirm once you've selected enough of them....you wouldn't think these people have been working on M:TG for 20 years.

I had problems with this too! I was shrieking at my iPad until I figured it out.

When you need to discard multiple cards, you do drag it up like you're going to play it. The highlight around that card will change, but SUPER SUBTLY. I was barely able to tell. So you just have to keep dragging up all the cards until you've picked enough and then it advances.

So does the gameplay for Magic 2013 ever get better? I'd like to give them $10 and enjoy Magic as I did 15 years ago but I'm put off by premade, cookie-cutter decks that are only one color, etc.

Don't know if it was ever mentioned here, because it was released 2 months ago, but Jordan Mechner's infamous The Last Express is also available on iOS now ($4.99). At least the Idle Thumbs regularly go nuts over it as a prime example of creating a highly polished microcosm where dozens of things happen concurrently in real-time.

All the multi color decks are only 2 colors, the base set only has one of the multi color decks. The expansion has 5 multi color decks. And there are 2 deck packs of 2 decks each ( both multi color ).

We also have this thread buried about 10 pages down and in that thread is another link to codes you can use to get promo cards for the base set and expansion.

The ability to tweak your decks does help with the gameplay rather than just being a stale set of cookie-cutter decks.

So how much would that cost, including the $10 "unlock full game"?

Also, what kinds of lands exist in 2013 aside from vanilla? Any dual lands or anything?

But the biggest I hurdle keeping me from diving further into 2013 than the demo are the customization limitations. Decks only each have 30 unlockable cards, right, so you must choose to make a roughly 60-card deck out of only 90 cards, 1/3 of which are land? Doesn't seem very M:TG to me. Will they ever allow you to make any deck you want from the entire collection you've unlocked?

As someone who has just procured an Ipad, is there a master list of all the recommended games? Looking at toucharcade and the thread is a bit overwhelming...

As a strategy/rpg fan, looking at FFT and probably ticket to ride

Kingdom Rush
Great Big War Game
Fairway Solitaire

Taken together, I'd say those 3 titles have taken up about 90% of my iPad gaming time.

Man, Poly and I just had a horrible board in Letterpress. But he was able to play "witch" after both "switch" and "twitch" had been played. I thought that wasn't allowed?

If "switc" was a word, it wouldn't let you play that if "switch" was already played. It is the start of the word, not the end that matters.

I've gotten some pretty bad boards myself. I was playing a game with my sister, and the only unclaimed letters were V and X. The only vowells were 2 I's and a U. I finally ended up "suiciding" by taking one of the last letters, and she won the next turn by taking the other.

Aristophan on GameCenter. I pretty much suck at this game, except against a certain Australian primate, with whom I've managed to win a few games.

Ooooh. I thought it was any unmodified portion of a prior word.

BTW Poly, feel free to rematch me. I was just getting a server error on my last few games when trying to rematch so I haven't been able to.

I've never heard of this game before, and it looks pretty interesting. Reading a bit online it appears to not support pass-and-play (unless it was added recently). Still looks fun, though. How do you find people to play against if there's no local option?

Plenty of GWJers play. The pick-up matches are fine too, at least with no chat function.

It does not support Pass and Play. When I suggested to them that they add it, I got a 'Noted' with a coy ';)' so I suppose its in the pipe, but as a game developer I know that even the simplest feature can spend a LONG time in the pipe.

Liquid, the Switch, Stitch, Twitch, Female Doggo, Witch, Glitch game was amusing. A couple of those I had the next word queued up just waiting for you to pick some version of 'itch' amusingly, no one ever actually submitted 'itch' Good win on your part. I started to do a rematch but I never submitted a word after I stared at the board a few minutes.

Edit to plug a game I discovered: Cryptogram is a fun letter substitution code breaking game. Its very simple, they didnt add any gamey elements on top of the code breaking, its just you and the puzzle and there are hundreds (all quotes). Nice clean typewriter interface too. Definitely recommended if you like that kind of puzzle.

Now I need a code to upgrade my 32GB iPad into a 64GB.

I picked up an iPad over the holidays and have been using this thread to get those must-have games. Been enjoying Hero Academy, Spectromancer, and Letterpress so far.

How do you add people on Game Center? By ID? Email?

I grabbed #2. Thank you for the codes, Sloth =)

FSeven, you can enter emails or GameCenter usernames in GC's friend request tool. I recommend adding "GWJ FSeven" or equivalent in your request so folks know youre not random spamming emails. In the meantime, you can also add your GC name to your Aliases field on your GWJ profile. Note that when requesting friends on GC, you can add as many folks as you can on each request, not just one at a time.

The really annoying thing when using GC is that in GC itself, you see friends' names in the list, and must click them individually to see their user IDs, whereas when you're playing a game over GC you'll see their user IDs and not their names. Makes for a real disconnect when having friends on your list you don't personally know.

I noticed someone using the Status field to enter their GWJ username so I did the same. Obviously that might not be ideal for some people though.

Brilliant! Doing that now.

FSeven, be sure to add me: muzzynj

Grabbed the last one. Much appreciated, oh flaming slow one.

I picked up Forbidden Island for the iPad yesterday. I hadn't had a chance to play the board game previously but it seemed like a very nice implementation. My daughter and I had a good time playing.

It's been on my appshopper wishlist since the day it launched but it doesn't look like Button Mash Games knows what a price drop is. Ironic since the board game is always on sale somewhere.

I think it was only $4.99 which I understand isn't .99 but since it's multiplayer that still seemed like a bargain way to try the game.

Some of the authors of board game apps are small companies, and they rarely do a price drop. The oldest game on my wish list on Appshopper is "Reiner Knizia's Samarai," which was released in August of 2010 at $4.99, updated twice, and has never had a price drop.

Personally, I thought that Forbidden Island was worth the price.

Briefly setting the price of Forbidden Island aside, how is it as coop? My wife and I have been playing a lot of Lost Cities and Ascension against one another, both of which can become decidedly unfun if the cards go against you. So I'd like to know how Forbidden Island is on iPads. Does it support wifi and/or playing over GameCenter? Does it devolve into the do-it-this-way problem of Pandemic, or manage to stay mutually fun throughout?

Any other good coop or couples' games we should try?
