iPhone Games Catch-All

Here's an interesting tidbit (if not posted somewhere else before)...

iOS games now outnumber EVERY game on EVERY platform ever made.

That's kinda neat, lol. Now, how many are actually GOOD is another story!

I'm making a totally uneducated guess here but aren't there more flash games floating around the 'net' than iOS apps in total?

I'm guessing this statistic is just counting console games and excludes anything on the PC. Otherwise I'm not sure I believe it.

So, now that Rage is out I have this question:

Since I have a 3GS should I still buy the HD version? Will it be choppy or will it run smooth?

So which one do you get? Well, if you have an iPhone 4, a 4th generation iPod touch, or an iPad, you really need to get RAGE HD. If you've got a 3rd generation iPod touch or an iPhone 3GS, it's a toss up. RAGE HD will run, but the standard RAGE will play smoother. If you plan on upgrading to a newer device soon, consider RAGE HD. If you own an older device, only RAGE will run, so you don't have much of a choice.

Rage HD is a 700+ MB download. Not sure what I think about games getting so darn large. I have plenty of room, but still... for some reason I start to balk at the idea of downloading something that big.

<kidding>Think of it as value for money. Every MB downloaded is assets someone had to work on. This makes Rage HD a better deal than pretty much any game on the itunes store.</kidding>

Seriously though Rage HD (if you've an idevice that can display it in the higher rez) is a pretty good deal at $2.
I mean, it's just a shooting gallery, but it's an amazing looking shooting gallery.

From what I have read, the tilt is better as the accelerometer control is really well implemented. The HD version is really only for 4th gen devices, but there isn't much point on earlier gens anyway, as it makes little difference without the retina screen or iPad's size, never mind how it runs.

All that has stopped me pulling the trigger is the idea of 700+ meg for a one hour game. Not an issue on my iPad, but I only have a 16 gb iPhone 4, and it is brimful already.

Muahaha... the advantages of the 32 GB version are kicking in.

Edit - Disregard what I said before... after reading reviews it seems it does run on the 3GS albeit you don't get to take any advantage of the extra resolution. After trying it on the iPhone 4, I would say a slow framerate would kill the controls. On the iPhone 4, it is really smooth and works well.

I think they're probably counting the iPhone as a console because Apple is the only hardware manufacturer and all official apps go through them.

On the other hand, while Apple's system is more locked down than the PC or Android market, it's way more open to developers than anything Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft have done in the console space. Calling it "just another console" isn't quite accurate. iOS is in this weird middle space.

So I believe the statistic, I'm just not sure that it really means anything.

Like I wouldn't have filled that by now!

I'm going to set the download going in my iPad when I go to bed. The wonders of a 1.2mb rural Internet service!

Meh. Rage looks pretty but at the end of the day it's a railed shooter. Think of it as a tech demo. That and Epic Citadel highlight what douchebags Apple are for not having a memory card slot.

It's going to be painful when the wave of Unreal-powered games start coming out.

Anyone outside the US able to buy "Rage" ? I tried following the link from the page but my 3rd rate mexican iTunes store won't open it.

Anyone seen any good deals recently?

I got it in Canada.

I got it in Australia and it we're pretty 3rd-world when it comes to computery things.

I bought Rage last night for my 3gs. 0,79 eurocents here in the Netherlands. I got the non-HD version since my iPhone doesn't have the retina display. Runs great and it's actually quite allright; I got it out of curiosity and because I have a soft spot for ID Software. The tilt controls kinda work... (Looks great btw)

I've had quite a bit of fun with Rage so far. It's way intense, though. Haven't made it through episode 3 yet.

I hear it gives a lot of people problems on older iTouches, I'll probably wait 'till they update it.

Rage is a nice tech demo

As infantile as it may sound, LEGO Harry Potter is so good. Seriously, one of the best iPhone games, regardless of your attitude towards both franchises.

Argh! I cannot get it for the ipad until the update gets released!

I love Legos, I love Harry Potter, yet the 360 game did nothing for me. Go figure. They're just too simplistic.

I've been enjoying 100 ROGUES since the 2.0 release-- fun, simple, good looking Rogue game.

Got really kind of pissed tonight when I was playing, though. I had around 12,500 points on level 7, and got trapped in a corner by that stupid stone cat head thing! Googled that it has about 10,000 hp, so I ended up just having to starve to death.

Grr.

Ditto this. I'm not really sure why I like it, but it's neat.

I got an iPhone 4 yesterday, my first, and today I spent all afternoo—er, I skimmed quickly through this thread and scribbled the names of a good 50 or 60 well-received titles. Thanks to everyone for posting your thoughts!

hey, if you did, mind sharing with us? I wouldn't mind a "best of" from the board

Now if you need an order in which to purchase your stuff

1- cut the rope
2- Game Dev Story
3- ... err, carry on then

Game Dev Story is $2.99 now, down two bucks from what it used to be. So if you don't have it, now is a good time.

No Plants vs. Zombies?

Oops, I left it out because I had already bought it. Fixed.

No Tilt to Live? It's the most addictive short (single game is 2-4 minutes) game I've played in last couple of years.

Eh, the iPhone's tilt function just doesn't appeal to me much, so I've overlooked games that rely heavily on it. I'll add it to the list, though, since it's become apparent that others find it useful, and I wouldn't want to overlook such a well regarded game.
