iPhone Games Catch-All

Dungelot was pretty great, although apparently the recent update made it way too easy.

Yes, their long road of development was rather bumpy, and the eventual IAP situation is unfortunate. Still, I would recommend keeping an eye on them. They have been hard at work on Auro, another (slightly more liberal interpretation of a) rouge-like for the past couple of years and from the sound of things it's getting close to done. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they can make it work with a hex grid, and the art has a great look to it.

Edit: also, an updated version of 100 Rouges is launching with the Ouya this summer, and we will tentatively have a corresponding iOS update. one such feature mentioned is an option to disable the animations.

I had forgotten about that! Ido Yehieli of Cardinal Quest and Roguelike Radio fame is on the team along with Keith Burgun (the original designer of 100 Rogues). Looking forward to this one, even if they've stated that it's more of a puzzle/tactics game than a proper roguelike. Launching in May, nice!

That would make the game about 100% more appealing. And it took only 3 years to implement!

I feel a little burned by 100 Rogues. I bought it for full price ($5) at launch and it was a buggy mess that crashed on me repeatedly. They've since dropped the price and added a bunch of IAPs, but I'm still stuck with the two basic classes unless I want to shell out more money. I'd have to pay another $10 to get all the new classes. I'm coming at this as a huge roguelike fan. So I am used to free, fully-featured roguelikes like Nethack and DCSS. It is a pretty fun game, but I am not itching to give them more money.

Did you guys see that Spiderweb has three of their RPGs on iPad? Pretty cool...

The Silent Age is a free first chapter in an episodic point and click adventure thing (none of the other episodes are done). They plan for the second one to be free as well, but they are accepting donations towards it.

WOOOO!

King Cashing 2 is out tonight. I loved the first game; in fact, I credit it with helping me lose about 10 pounds, as I only played it when I was on the treadmill. The sequel appears to be bigger, badder, funnier, and, best of all, it has more of a story *squeal*. Comic panels! Motivation for your cruel affectations of fate and love!

Just started playing Dungelot after downloading it weeks ago. I am sorry it took this long to play because it's super addicting!

I just started as well. It's funny I skipped my normal neighborhood Halo night just to fulfill my unhealthy addiction to that game.

I actually got to level 110 with the brewer, and only on my third try! It's easy but it's fun I guess.

There's a new casual rogue-like in town, kiddies, and it brings a slot machine mechanic to the battle. It features an attentive dev in the TA forums, a whimsical art style, and a good deal of fun. The battle system features a teeny-tiny bit of of interactivity (not just rhythmically nudging that sweet honeypot that is your enemy) Plus, you can actually beat the game - no endless-runner style trickery here.

I'm talking, of course, about Dungeon Plunder!

So far I tried all the classes and got the Vampire fully upgraded. Furthest I got was 67 but I just started uses the Brewer without any upgrades and I am moving through very easily.

The alchemist girl isn't as great as I thought she would end up being. It's hard to get very far with her.

The sequel is apparently in the works.

Depressingly short. Even counting the grindy bits.

Actually, I said the wrong thing earlier. I actually used the Alchemist girl to get to level 110 -- I haven't even tried the Brewer yet.

Of course, now this confuses me that you think she is so difficult. I upgraded all her stuff to either level 2 or 3, and although things were tough to start, once I got some defensive gear and leveled up my attack points, I found it to be quite easy. Especially with the Robosaur; any time one of those appeared I could basically close my eyes and finish the floor without looking.

I've only tried her once though, so maybe I just got lucky?

I do think half the game is luck on what you find and what enemies are around.

So it's a roguelike. =)

Yeah. It more depends on how early you find a compass/shop/lantern/quests than anything else.

OK, I've seen a number of folks mention this game, so I picked it up... and... what parts *aren't* the grindy bits? Seems like the only thing non-grindy is reading the comic. Or are you guys so fast that you can actually stop the slot machine on something you want?

Ranger Rick wrote:

The bits where you get lucky. It's a slot machine game. The game gets grindy when they give you the illusion of strategy, but really you just need to get extremely lucky to win with the available resources.

Haha, OK, illusion of strategy with no actual strategy counts as "everything is grindy" to me. Ah well, if only I could gift away an iOS app...

*shrug* For me it's like a different take on Peggle. I like these kinds of minimal interaction time-wasters when I'm putting in the requisite 'together' time with my GF in front of the boob-tube. Half an eye on ST:NG, half an eye on my cue to hit the button again.

If you don't already have it, Super Mole Escape is now free during a content update. It's one of my favorite runners, and really an excellent arcade game.

There's a lot of luck to Peggle, but there is also a skill to skewing that luck to your advantage. I can't win every time with perfect skill, but I can make my chances of winning way higher by playing a certain way. I don't get that at all with King Cashing 2... It feels a bit like ProgressQuest to me, just hitting buttons to move the story forward.

Anyways, enough about that, how about them iOS games, eh?

OK, I'm Cleaning out my Starbucks codes pile.

I'm only going to post this once, please post which codes you claim. I have a grab bag of stuff free to a good home
