Lots of people on BGG are reporting lots of bugs with this game. I trust Playdek to patch it, and it's only 99 cents, so I went ahead and picked it up anyway. YMMV.

I've only played 1 round of it, so no bugs to report from my end

The BGG thread is pretty full of them... lots of moments when the AI will "stop" without rolling a single die, times with you will roll pairs that WORK, but the computer won't acknowledge that they are legal, placing four runners on the board, and more. I also only played a single game and didn't experience any bugs, so not sure what's up.

Fabulous!

If I don't get an uncomfortable 4th-wall breaking lesson in morality crowbarred into the end of every level I shall be bitterly disappointed.

So very awesome!

After a few years of being an Android user I am holding a shiny new iPhone 5 in my hand. I am daunted by the sheer volume of applications that I need to get caught up on.

While I am going to start poring through this thread backward, if anyone wanted to float their favorite chess apps my way, that list would be much appreciated! I had a good feel for everything that was good and everything that was crap on Android; my reckoning on iOS does not exist. Chess.com is already on for multiplayer.

(I'm also looking for wargames. So much to read up on - it's overwhelming.)

Didn't we just do this a few pages back? Well, fortunately for you I'm too lazy to check, but not so lazy that I won't throw a few up here:

Battle for Wesnoth
Civil War: 1863 (haven't played, but seen compared to Memoir '44—same developer as Tank Battle: 1944)
Great Big War Game
Great Little War Game
Neuroshima Hex
Pocket World at War (just discovered this one, downloading now)
Strategery (it's like Risk—but better)
UniWar (like Advance Wars)
Tank Battle: 1944 (do play, very simple, but you know, tanks)

Thanks! I have indeed seen a few of those mentioned as I move backwards in ttiiiiimmmeee

Has there been a good Axis and Allies port / clone / remake for iOS?

Super Mega Worm is now on iOS and is free for a limited time.

Well, I finally replaced my aged and failing iPod Touch 2g (it would spontaneously reboot, fail to hold a charge longer than a day even with airplane mode on, and frequently refuse to charge... I suspect a short near the battery) with a brand spanking new black iPod Touch 5g. Damn, what a sleek and sexy machine this is. And finally having a machine that runs an OS newer than 4.2.1 means that a slew of new (and not-so-new) games has become available to me, so it's reinvigorated my love of the iOS platform. I've sent out a bunch of GameCenter invites in the hopes of getting my multiplayer on, and also seeing what are some hot games that I may have missed in the last couple of years.

After a bit of research some time back, I found that Shredder Chess is one of, if not the top chess apps out there.

Chess:

Stockfish is free, great chess engine, pretty barebones on 'extras'.

Shredder Chess is a great chess app, it has multiple modes, puzzles, the works. It is 7.99 USD

Wargames: Ravenmark: Scourge of Estellion. Absolutely fantastic fantasy based wargame. After the next update, the campaigns are going to be free, but the price of the app is gong to go up to reflect it.

Also, don't get the Battle for Wesnoth version in the App Store. It was abandoned by the developer (who has no affiliation with wesnoth), has lots of bugs, and is a really old version. There is another port in the works, and it will be released to the App Store, with all the code on github. Source.

EDIT: fixing, formatting, spelling

Cool, thanks for the tips everyone. I found Stockfish already, being a fan of the engine in general. I saw Shredder and will probably fork over the dough for the Roll Royce of chess apps. Ravenmark looks nice; shame to hear about Wesnoth, though. That game's been around forever in the linuxsphere.

I might also shell out for Ascension, as people seem to like that game quite a bit in general.

Just a little.

Ok, I love it.

Battle for Wesnoth is a great turn based strategy game. I played it for a bit on the PC, and it has all the RPG, exp elements of games like Fire Emblem, but with tons of factions and units. Very mathematical as well, and it's very upfront with the possible outcomes of each of your moves.

My only peeve with these types of games is that fact that only the killing unit gets the exp. I really dislike this mechanic. Making my higher level units pull their punches in order for my weaklings to finish them off is ridiculous to me. If my peasent does 10 damage over 10 turns and then my Warwizard finishes him off with from a mile away with a 5 damage lightning bolt...why does the warwizard get all the exp? Did the peasent not fight anyone? Bleh!

Anyway, Wesnoth, good game.

Michael, if you don't want to shell out $8 for Shredder Chess, I'd suggest nabbing the free AppShopper app.

Create a wish list, give them your email, and you'll get an update the moment it goes on sale. Some sales are only 24hrs., so the email update part is important. Just drop anything of interest into your wish list folder and forget about it. You don't have to track down sales for your favorite apps, they come to you when discounted.

Works great 'cause all apps go on sale sporadically throughout the year, esp. around all the holidays.

AppShopper is great, definitely use it.

Anyone ever played this game before? XCOM like game?

Apparently it's supposed to be superfly after the latest update, but I haven't tried it myself.

Neuroshima Hex just got another army. Source. On Sale for a limited time, along with the 5 army bundle.

Carmageddon is free, today only.

I feel that would've been a better route for the Alien Frontiers devs to take instead of trying to round up coupons for everyone and the debacle that ensued.

"'Cause I'm out here grindin'," with its accompanying DJ Khaled beats describes my time with PuzzleCraft in the final few stages.

Inquiry: Any great ways to play chess on iOS?

Shredder Chess is widely considered the most comprehensive chess app out there.

Zombies, Run! is on sale for 50% off ($3.99) for Halloween.

I posted this in the iPad thread too, but since it is Universal, and also a Halloween sale item:

Organ Trail: Director's Cut went on sale today for $0.99

I'm a huge fan of tower defense games, starting the Bloons TD3 and 4 from PC. Iphone does have a few good ones, but by far my favorite so far the TD game Four Days. It's the kind where the enemies just have a spawn and endpath, but the towerws and debris make the path from their on out, part of the skill is the way you put towers down. Their are 9 kinds of towers, 3 utility, 3 guns, and 3 explosive towers. You can also upgrade the towers with the points you get from the previous matches, which makes it easier to progress in "days" There are a handful of maps that all have 4 days, or 4 levels of difficulty(as the alien invasion progresses it gets harder, lore wise)

It is a very solid game and I highly recommend it.

Any other cool tower defense games yall know of?

They are my favorite.

Fieldrunners 2 is pretty good IMO, although it's mostly not the "open field" type that you mentioned (although some of the levels are like that).

Ziploxx wrote:

In my Tower Defense folder...

GeoDefense (lite)
GeoDefense Swarm (lite)
Plants vs. Zombies
The Creeps! (Free, with IAP for additional levels).
GemCraft
Tiny Heroes (IAP for additional levels).
Army of Darkness Defense
Kingdom Rush

Everything Katy mentioned is good, though I didn't like Tiny Heroes. Most other people seem to like it.

Kingdom Rush, PvZ, Fieldrunners 2, The Creeps!, and Anomaly: Warzone Earth are the must-haves, imo. Also check out Sentinel 1-3, Jelly Defense, and Star Defense.

Geo Defense and Geo Defense: Swarm are my favorites. Is Kingdom Rush on the iphone? If yes, then that is my favorite (but I've only played it on pad).
