Post a quote, that could have just been text but instead for some stupid reason is an image, entertain me!

Have any of you watched broadcast TV lately? It's like 30-40% adverts.

Efffffff that.

I'll happily pay for service that respects my time better than that.

That's been the real societal progress of streaming, destroying an entire generation's tolerance for sitting through endless adverts.

You're not wrong, but streaming services are rushing to catch up with the number of ads. We're already seeing them explore "cheap" paid tiers that still include ads.

Cory Doctorow really captures the essence of how tech is failing society with his “ensh*ttification” articles and talks.

I loved this article, as most things from Cory Doctorow. His tone and style is so great.

You can't use attention as a medium of exchange. You can't use it as a store of value. You can't use it as a unit of account. Attention is like cryptocurrency: a worthless token that is only valuable to the extent that you can trick or coerce someone into parting with "fiat" currency in exchange for it.

Your own personal time is the most valuable asset you have. Don’t let others take it away from you.

I pay for Google music solely because I also get ad-free youtube. I have three kids who use 90% of their watching time on youtube. Saves me not only time but also helps keep the cap down.

For the streaming services you pay for today yeah. Free ones not so much. TBH I wouldn't be surprised if the paid ones are just waiting to stuff ads into shows as soon as they think they can get away with it.

Kind of like video games....

I assume you are paying for YouTube Premium then. We have a family plan for YouTube Music and it doesn't prevent ads. If Premium does that it is likely worth the extra few bucks a month.

Edit: According to their website the difference between Music Premium (what I have) and YouTube Premium is:

With a YouTube Premium membership, you can watch ad-free videos on YouTube. Plus, you can download videos to watch offline—and you can play videos in the background while you use other apps.

$6 CAD per month price difference

I only watch Youtube in a browser (Firefox/Chrome) on PC, with the uBlock extension installed and running. No ads, ever.

Just when is it necessary?

Take 3 six-packs and call us back from Okaloosa County.

I did like that my biggest concerns were Y2K and whether I should go cable or DSL for high speed internet. Oh, and turning 30, and when to get a house, and how many kids to have, and whether to get a mini-van now or later. I guess there was always something to stress about.

But domestic terrorism, fascism, and earth-shaking climate events weren't on my radar then, so I'll still call it a simpler time.

I was very much worried about the climate situation back then, but I had picked that issue up in the mid-80's working for the National Space Science Data Center, so...

Naively, I thought that background and my college studies would give me some cred with my friends on that topic, but tribalism was much more important to the vast majority. I changed a few minds but not anywhere near what I had hoped for.

Should be "penchant for poisoning and staging airline accidents." Otherwise, accurate.

The term you're looking for is 'defenestration'. It's my favorite word after 'callipygian'. They just don't get used enough.

That MiniBar... At The W in Hollywood, something like $360 would clear it out, according to Boozist. More mid-range chains, probably $150, according to other sources. So it would like double the rate per night, at least.
