Assassin's Creed Unity Guillotine-all

I suppose it was inevitable, but looks like we have our French Revolution era game.

Qu'ils mangent de la brioche [Let them eat cake]! We have been working on the new Assassin's Creed for more than three years and although we weren't quite ready to show you our full vision for a next-gen only AC, it seems Abstergo are trying to force our hand! So here's a true first look at in-game footage from Assassin's Creed Unity. Stay tuned - we'll have many more exciting details for you in the months ahead!

About damn time. Don't know how they're going to work pirate ships in there though. I look forward to diving off the top of Notre Dame.

Awesome Graphics look Awesome

Now we're talking!

preamble: I thought AC2 was fantastic, and then I ignored the franchise for years because I don't need a new one of these every stinking year. I got AC3 free with a GPU and could not get in to it, didn't even get to Conner. I picked up AC4 with my PS4 and think it's largely a blast.

amble: This looks freaking gorgeous, and I think it's an excellent setting, so there's a lot of promise here. However, the best part of AC4 is being a pirate and all the sailing, the worst part of AC4 is the really tedious mission designs that have been with the series since the start. The Social Stealth stuff that the series was initially supposed to be about has never quite worked, but in theory it could. The straight up "don't get detected" stealth bits are awful, just awful. I really hope they have worked out better mission mechanics this time around, I will be disappointed if it's just another iteration of what the series has been doing. And the boats need to come back in some way. Seems plausible considering the era, and plausible because I don't think they'll just dump the mechanic.

What I really want to see is them deliver on the original promise of the series. Here's a big well realized world full of people, here is a list of your assassination targets, get to work using the means at your disposal to hunt them all down. I want something more dynamic and emergent, I don't really want another quest line full of the same few mission structures to trudge through.

Looks cool, but the beginning of the video gave be a Bioshock- Columbia vibe.

I'm impressed by the visuals and its being this year. Man, I need to go back and finish Black Flag (which I really liked).

What I would love is an AC via Hitman.

This is the setting I've been waiting for, as someone with a passing familiarity and interest in the history. But it bothers me to no end that the Brotherhood, the obvious sub-title to my mind, was already used, and Liberty, the next most obvious, would be too close to Liberation. Still, I guess it's understandable that they didn't go with Assassin's Creed: Equality, and, according to wikipedia, Union was used in some variations of the slogan, so I suppose at least it's not totally unrelated.

AssCreed: Egalite?

Actually, I'm kinda betting it'll be more like Assassin's Creed: Revolution.

A couple of very alpha screenshots leaked earlier this week. They were neat, but clearly didn't have any texture work done and were probably missing a lot of graphics goodies. I expect this is Ubisoft trying to get a bit ahead of the news cycle.

As for the French Revolution, I love it. They've been threatening to do it for years, so it's not surprising.

I wish they would get around to some non-Western cultures, but I think they're a little nervous about jumping into cultures too far outside of their own backgrounds.

What I'm really hoping is that they switch up the mechanics of AC a good bit in this next release. I think people are pretty much done with eavesdropping on conversations, for example. There's got to be a way to plan out these assassinations without waiting 2.5 minutes for a guard to make his patrol route. Something like disguises would be very welcome in this release. If they don't change things, then I think they're looking at a dog, and it may not greatly impact this release, but it will do in the next release. In fact, I think it's going to have to win over reviewers to some extent to have decent sales. That'll be a tall order, because I'm not any of the AC releases have ever been particularly well-reviewed.

Sengoku period Japan, Ninja Assassins Vs Samurai Templar. That is all.

THIS MUST HAPPEN

Hasn't one of the Ubi people in charge of the franchise said they consider ancient Japan to be one of worst possible times for an AC game?

Pretty sure I remember that.

Granted, I think that guy's an idiot, but still. Would seem to imply pretty bad odds on ever seeing that

All I remember is them saying they would never do a setting that had cars in it because other games do that mechanic better.

It's certainly one of the most oversaturated settings in gaming. They might as well set a game in World War 2 or a vaguely Middle Eastern country circa 2011.

Still not Russian Revolution. Lame.

I doubt very strongly it will ever happen too. I think the reason Ubi doesn't want to do it is because it doesn't fit in to the mold the series has, and that they refuse to break. Revolution France might be cool, but is it really stretching the series much? Is it that much different from renaissance Italy? You're gonna be clambering up a lot of churches and palaces in France, this time they'll be rococo though. In a lot of ways it almost feels like a step back in to their safe zone, which is disappointing.

I don't know how I'll be able to go from pirate ship back to land-locked gameplay.

What I'm most interested to see is how much (if any) they've redone the core locomotion gameplay. There were a few leaked screenshots featuring separate "parkour up" and "parkour down" button prompts, and I'm hoping that points towards some degree of revision to the standard "hold one button and traverse the environment" controls that have remained largely unchanged since the beginning of the series.

I've been playing AC4 recently and really enjoying it, but I have to admit that running across rooftops and clambering up buildings is starting to feel a bit rote. What I think would be great is if they also gave the player's character a greater sense of weight and inertia in this next installment, perhaps even incorporating some level of physics simulation into the way you move about the environment (sort of like Mirror's Edge where you need to build up some momentum in order to make a particularly big leap). I sort of doubt they'll do anything too drastic for fear of alienating fans of the series, but I also think it's getting to the point where they need to change things up a bit more.

I wouldn't mind assassinating some bolsheviks. Maybe take a stab at Father Lenin.

Yeah, they did, and I kind of agree with their reasoning.

Japanese architecture, mostly because they get nearly constant earthquakes, tended to avoid being very tall, and cities were all relatively sparse.

So there's not much to really draw on, vertically, though the castles are fairly interesting.

As for the countryside, that could be interesting if it's all mountain passes, but that wasn't where the people really were, so... yeah.

Actually, that's not a heck of a lot different than the landscape in AC3.

Yeah, and the landscape in AC3 kinda sucked.

Agreed.

I'm still hoping for mid-1800's New York. I want to hang out with Mark Twain and Nikola Tesla, and battle the forces of Thomas Edison.

Ancient China would be cool, but I've been saying that for years.

Werd. I'm interested in just about any setting other than ninja-and-samurai era Japan. Hell, if they did to an unnamed Middle Eastern 2003-The Not Too Distant Future, it would at least be refreshingly not a 1st person shooter (I would hope).

So, hope this one's cool.

Tell me about it. This introduction is so drawn out and not overly interesting thus far. Haytham Kenway is also kind of dull. I was beginning to wonder if Connor was actually an AC4 character as the hours tally up.

Looks great.

I was watching a programme on Korean food last night and thought historical Korea might be a great, unexpected location choice. I don't know what kind of weaponry or martial arts they went in for in ye olden days.
