Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS) Catch-All

I figured out that most of my weapons only went to yellow, but I was confused because I had at least one that went to green (when I was trying out the different job classes). Also, for some reason, I thought you pressed B to use an item instead of Y.

I also finally figured out how to put the bonus Palicoes in the first string. Bastards messed me up on that egg quest, though, because they like to aggro sh*t. There's no way to control their behavior, right?

Not directly. The type of palico will determine what they do. Someone posted this guide way earlier in the thread, it's worth re-posting now:

Ultimate Palico Guide

Give that a read to find out all you ever need to know about Palicoes. You can also make the egg quests a LOT easier by watching the daily food buffs, there are some which make it so you don't drop eggs as readily.

Damn, most people on MH forums seem to be dicks. People have asked the same questions I have, and get "you can't be serious," or "did you even read?" As replies. So helpful.

The "only play with GWJ" rule is hardly a guarantee that you won't still have to deal with jerks, but it holds for the Monster Hunter crew.

I'm not even thinking of multiplayer yet. Just Googling for answers because the wikis are very lacking in practical info.

I was including "asking for help and advice" in with that.

I know better than to ask for help out in the wild for a seven-month-old game; I'm literally just looking at what others have asked before me. No GWJer is around 24/7, after all.

You'd be surprised how many people are online on Steam at all hours of the day and night. Ask and maybe you'll get some help. Dyni and I have had several MH4U related talks at various hours.

But I play my DS in bed. Unless steam has an iOS client, I'm SOL, as I draw the line at bringing the laptop to bed.

I still shudder at the look Absurd gave me when I did Pokemon voice chat in bed one night.

Yeah steam has been on both iOS and Android for a couple of years, with full chat functions.

You should definitely ask any questions here that don't need immediate answers. This is simply not a game series where you will be able to figure out everything on your own. We will answer them, promise I still love talking about these games.

+1!

I love, love, LOVE talking about Monster Hunter!

Dee, take a look at the original post for some recommended reference stuff to look at, especially for beginners.

What are your recommendations for beating that monkey thing? Kecha Wacha. DB isn't cutting it, and for the first time, I failed a quest due to dying three times. I was pretty short on time remaining as well.

Here are some tactics that come to mind for the Kecha Wacha:

  • If you're not currently using the lock-on feature that enables you to center your view on the monster by hitting L1, try it! By default, you can toggle the lock-on on and off by tapping the monster's icon on the touchscreen. When the lock-on is enabled, the monster's icon will have a crosshairs over it.
  • If possible, fight the KW in an area that does not have an overhanging floor that he can suspend himself from. The KW is a monster that makes very good use of those floors, and is much less formidable on open land. You can drive it (or any other monster) to another area by hitting it with a dung bomb .
  • Hitting it with a sonic bomb when it's not enraged will daze the KW for a couple seconds (its big ears make it susceptible), sometimes enabling you to get in a couple quick hits, or to get away if it's being really merciless. When you toss a sonic bomb, it travels in an arc in front of you, then explodes some distance away. Unlike with a dung bomb, you don't have to impact the KW directly; the sonic bomb just needs to explode near it. A successful hit with a sonic bomb will cause the KW to fall if it's hanging from the ceiling. It'll also often cause a it to drop a "shiny" (an item that can be picked up, indicated by a shining object on the ground), which can usually either be used for crafting at the blacksmith, or to give you some extra zenny at the end of a quest. Make sure the KW has moved away before picking it up, though!
  • Hitting it with a flash bomb will actually stun the KW (and other monsters) for several seconds, during which time they'll attack blindly, often in the completely wrong direction. A stunned monster has a circle of yellow stars over its head. It'll also cause an affected hanging or flying monster to fall, too. As with a sonic bomb, you don't need to impact the monster directly with the flash bomb; in this case, though, it needs to explode in front of the monster.
  • Although (I believe) all monsters have a visual tell when they're raging, the KW's is especially noticeable: it covers its face with its ears. When raging, it's not susceptible to sonic and flash bombs, and its movements and attacks are faster and more fierce.

Thanks, bunby; you're da bomb! I've been collecting and crafting bombs, but didn't know when to use them.

No problem! I'm bursting with suggestions . A great way to test out bombs (and other items as well) is to try them all out on a quest (preferably one with an inexpensive registration fee), then abandon the quest. Abandoning completely restores your inventory to its pre-quest state, at the expense of your registration fee (as well as losing any items that you picked up during the quest).

Great tips by Bunby. The lock on tip in particular is crucial to playing the game. As soon as you get sight of a monster, make sure you set it to your target lock on. I use L to center the camera on the monster constantly throughout a fight. I probably only use the manual camera controls 20% of the time, usually in areas that have major elevation changes.

I'll add a few more:

1) As a dual blade user, unless you are trying to break specific parts, go for the legs. Dual blades attack faster than any other weapon in the game, so they are tripping machines. Any time the monster is crowd controlled is free dps time.

2) As I'm sure you've noticed, using items takes time. If you find yourself dangerously low on health, don't be afraid to leave the area you're in to heal risk free. Just make sure you have a paintball on the monster so you don't lose track of it.

3) If you're fighting a new monster, don't be afraid to keep your weapons sheathed, run around, and just observe. One of the things that the Monster Hunter series is known for is having memorable monsters with distinctive behavior. There is a lot of programmed AI behavior for each monster. Sometimes if you're struggling with a particular monster, it can be helpful to just watch. There are often clear openings that you might not have seen in the heat of battle.

So, I go away from the forums for a week and suddenly people are back playing this? All right, I will keep an eye out and post here whenever I'm available...

If by "people" you mean me, then yes. I had a lot of pile to go through first.

Is there a point to the pig in your house, or is he just to pet and dress?

Poogie determines how lucky you are for your next hunt. If your poogie loves you, you will get better loot. You can sacrifice different cats at the poogie altar and if it is pleased, you are guaranteed a rare drop based on the type of cat.

I thought this wasn't GameFAQs. I'd love to sacrifice a bonus pal or two.

Poogie does nothing, but can be dressed as a watermelon and that costume is called Pygmelion. Poogie is all the goodness in the world.

You can also carry it out of your house, and your Palicoes will ride it rodeo style.

Sometimes poogie runs away and you have to find him again.

I ended up breaking the circle pad of my old 3DS. I don't think MH and I are meant to get along very well. Are 2DSs more resilient?

I'm back in, too! I've run out of steam on my revived solo attempt at 3U. I'm knocking on Village 7*'s door but, bleh, Plesioth. I got in some good practice with the Great Sword along the way, so that's good, but then I jumped back into Switch Axe in 4U and it just feels so right.

Ugh, sorry to hear about that. The issue with your n3DS sounds really weird, especially when it's happening both with the digital and physical edition. My n3DS works like a dream with the game, so it's possible that your unit is defective. Maybe you can send it in for repair or something.

Anyway, hope you're back in the game soon! I'd be happy to team up!

I did sent the n3DS back to Nintendo for repair. I've been playing MH4U on my old 3DS in the meantime, but broke the circle pad. I'm going to see if I can cannibalize my older 3DS (with the broken screen) to replace the circle pad.

Ah, gotcha! Good luck with the transplant!

Monster Hunter wants you to really want it by putting you through elaborate trials.

This takes the crafting mechanic to a whole new level.

Quest Complete! I didn't even break any tools in the process. Sure, I now have a darker Circle Button, but it works!

I'm definitely keeping the rest of my ancient 3DS for more parts.

Nice! You have impressive carving skill.
