On January 26, 2014, Capcom announced that Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, the localized version of the Japanese Monster Hunter 4 G, would be coming to the west, sometime in "early" 2015.
I believe that I jumped up and down for a good minute.
Once we get a firm date I'll post it here, as well as a hunter list of those who will be partaking of the hunt on our 3DS's. Keep your weapons sharp and your mega potions handy, friends.
Update: Confirmed release date of February 13th, 2015

Woohoo!
Wish this was coming out on the Wii U.
Might have to pick up a 3DS.
According to the report, players will indeed be able to send others flying onto the back of monsters, so those annoying (or hilarious) moves that used to send your buddies flying sky high will now have a purpose. However, when a monster sends you flying in the air, you won’t be able to take advantage of that and do the same thing.
Oh god, so Blind_Evil will be even crazier with his swings...

Blind_Evil: I'M HELPING!
Cube must have me confused with someone else, I hate hammers. I'm a switchaxe, bow, gunlance guy.
Well, I'll either have to finally invest in a Circle Pad Pro for the 3DS, or wait for this to come out on a console.

Unless I'm mistaken, MH4 isn't compatible with the circle pad pro. No one bought it, so it stopped getting support.

If true, this will make me a sad panda, since I did buy it.
The Nintendo 3DS wiki doesn't list it. Although it's possible that Circle Pad Pro support is being added in the Ultimate version.
The Circle Pad Pro is such a funny thing to me. When it was announced, it was widely seen as an admission on Nintendo's part that the 3DS should have included a second analog control and that this was a desperate stop-gap prior to a hardware revision. I remember some people saying they were happy about a second circle pad but were going to wait for it to be built-in rather than buy the attachment. But because the attachment sold so poorly, games didn't support it and there didn't seem to be any demand for it, so an integrated second stick just didn't happen. Ironically, not buying the frankenstick likely killed the possibility of not needing the frankenstick.
I put 10 or so hours into MH3 with a CPP and switched to the 3DS XL without one and it wasn't that difficult a transition.
I played a lot of Monster Hunter Freedom 2 on the PSP, and while it's certainly playable without a second analog stick, it was frustrating and hurt my hands. In comparison, my time with MH3 on the Wii (and Wii U) was fantastic. I no longer felt like I was fighting more against the controls than against the monsters. I just have no desire to go back to a single-analog control scheme for a Monster Hunter game.
I though the controls on the DS version without the CPP were totally fine, and definitely better than the ridiculousness of the PSP's "claw grip". They're nicer with the CPP, though it's really more of a luxury than a requirement.
What is The Claw™? I see people mention that a lot, but I have a hard time grasping what that control scheme might be.
This contortion of your hand where you used your left thumb on the PSP's analog nub, your index finger on the crosspad, and your middle or ring finger (personal preference) on the left shoulder button.
Holy evil hell, that looks terrible.
And by comparison, the native 3DS control scheme looks a lot better.

Yeah, it was completely bonkers, yet kind of required to keep the camera where you wanted it.
PSP game is actually quite playable on the Vita btw - you can map the shoulder buttons to the second stick.

Not to mention painful if used for more than an hour. It does become somewhat instinctive eventually though. Back when I was playing MHFU intensively, I was doing it without realizing it. I still do whenever I play Portable 3rd on my PSP.

Whaaaaat?! That's awesome!

This is a thing? I'd love to go back. My first MH game was 3 on the Wii because I couldn't manage the controls on the PSP.

Well, d-pad, not shoulders, but yeah - it's a tiny bit awkward because it's mapping digital controls to an analog stick (it's easy to accidentally pull in our out when panning), and the size of the Vita makes it comfy (for my ogre hands, anyway)
Heh, I knew what you were getting at, no worries. Yeah, despite the potential for zooming mistakenly, I'll still take that over the claw method.
