Let's talk anime.

IRL I really like freckles as a physical feature, so my gut reaction was kind of horrified that one of my favorite aspects of her character design was actually fake. I was like, wtf. Good freckles are rare enough in anime. And, the explanation that fake freckles somehow made her hideously ugly enough that slave traders would no longer be interested or something, are you kidding...

To be fair I think she's supposed to be just plain not ugly. Which helps her blend in. Particularly when there's other pretty people around. And is only considered pretty when super dolled up like the other courtesans.

Truth though it is just an excuse so people will underestimate her in the story allowing for detective stuff to happen. While still allowing for the pretty people falling in love cliche... Still love Mao's character though. She's hilarious to me.

Oh and you're right how few characters have freckles in anime. Anime same face style is no joke.

I'll only repeat what master0 already said. She was aiming for blending in, not being ugly, and that's basically what she got. She's deemed unremarkable, not hideous. She was literally sold to the rear palace by slave traders at the very start of the show.

The entire idea of concubines and a rear palace is something that won't gel with people, so it's really not a show that can cater to everyone. But while the entire idea is all kinds of ick, it's also a dark reality that happened, and continues to happen in various ways today. Looking at that sort of thing is part of the show's schtick. Ugly people would not be allowed in the rear palace, of course. Plain, yes. Ugly, no.

DanDaDan episode 7 is a severe tonal shift into upsetting reality. It was very good, but not what I was expecting.

365 days till the wedding. Super simple and sweet. I love it

It's a different sort of upsetting reality, that's for sure.
