Let's talk anime.

Haven't had the time to check much out yet, but the first episode of Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! was great. I'm really excited for more!

Macross fan checking in.

Loved Macross Plus, Macross Frontier, didn't like Macross Walkure as much though (it went quite meta with idol group concept which was a departure from solo idol concepts which meant less screentime per character).

Robotech is this weird mashup of 3 different IPs although the first part of it is the original SDF Macross. As a kid I never realised this explained why the animation and art was so different. The fan subbing I've seen for SDF Macross indicates Harmony Gold took a lot of liberties with the translation. Worth tracking a fan sub to see what I mean.

Who knows we may see more Macross soon. After all, HBS settled the Harmony Gold litigation over the mecha designs which were released in Heavy Metal for BATTLETECH.

You may be able to find copies of the AnimEigo DVD release of Macross from over a decade ago. I have them and they're wonderful.

Cross posting from the Post a Video thread, I just found an interesting youtube channel that does cool retrospectives on movies, and one of them is a surprisingly in depth look at Ninja Scroll. And now it's been brought up a second time this week by fang. Weird.

All three are available on Amazon Prime, although in rather poor quality.

Macross
Sothern Cross
Mospedea

Protoculture is not a plant or a fuel source... (well fuel source for unrequited love maybe...)

Yesssssss. New Haikyu.

That Time I was Reincarnated as a Slime

I'm up to the part where a powerful loli girl is introduced wearing next to nothing. She is in the intro. Still liking the show. I noticed that nearly all the named monsters look human. I'm betting I can guest the reason for that if there is one.

I do find it funny someone is in the intro but I think they were only in two episodes and I don't think we are going to see the character again. The intro makes it look like its a main character. funny.

Some more thoughts on the new season:

In/Spectre - Ok, the first episode was impressive. Some nice surprises. Definitely interested in what else the series may go. I liked the two main characters, both before and after the real personalities and existences are revealed.

Oda Cinnamon Nobunaga - Has to be the silliest anime this season, even if the manga as been running for three or four years. Japanese warlords reincarnated as dogs? It's pretty humorous and strange. Had to look up about half of the warlords though.

NekoparA - It has those that love it, it has a vocal group of haters, but I personally don't care one way or the other; I found the first episode to be very boring. I just didn't find it cute enough to support its slow and relaxed pacing. I'll probably give it another episode, but if it doesn't grab me, it'll be the second show I drop this season.

There is not a single new show this season that I am interested in watching. Oh well, I've way behind on My Hero Academia anyway.

I put In/Spectre on my watch list, it certainly looks good, and I'm pleased you liked it (so far), Mantid.
I suspect I'll watch at least some of Nekopara, if only to see what the second anime series adapted from a hentai game (that I know of) looks like.

What's the other one?

Fate/Stay Night? School Days? Utawarerumono? Little Busters? Air? The Fruit of Grisaia? YU-NO?

Erm, that's off the top of my head, but I'm sure we can find another one you know.

Lol. The only other one (that I know of) is the Fate series.

The latest episodes of My Hero Academia are good. The only downside is not using the ladies enough.

Anyone have any thoughts on Weathering With You? I'm trying to decide if I want to catch a screening of it this weekend. (Somehow, I still haven't seen Your Name.)

I'm seeing it tonight. The general opinion I've had been hearing about it was that it is a great film, but not as good as Your Name, but I'll share my opinion later.

Edit: And I'm back!

It was a good film! I enjoyed it. Everyone I went with enjoyed it. It was beautifully animated (all that hand drawn rain and water!)

I can understand some of the criticisms. The story pattern was very close to Your Name, with the themes of each act lining up between the two. Despite that, it was different enough that the similarities didn't bother me.

I definitely think it's worth seeing.

Wanted to watch a anime with a female protagonist so started Revolutionary Girl Utena. Seems to be a super skinny girl with pointy chin people anime. Reminds me of sailor moon and that one galactic space battle show. Seems to be geared towards girls into girls or pretty anime boys.

Interestingly one of the main characters is brown skinned but she gets slapped a lot. People also like to pull swords out of her and nobody finds that weird. And how do they get the sword back into her?

Thanks! I think I'll catch a showing.

That's how it starts, yes.

Oh Wow wow wow! This is a really special anime. I've been waiting for an anime with substance for a season or two or three and the first episode had me giggling, cheering, and just made me damn happy.

I was browsing the dresden subreddit, and someone suggested "Kamen Rider Wizard" for a nice urban fantasy type vibe that is mildly similar.

Anyone here watched it?

Hmm. I'm not sure what to think of Weathering With You. Was the theme of the movie really:

Spoiler:

It's okay to accept climate change if you don't want to make any sacrifices, and besides, it's probably a natural process anyway.

It's beautifully animated, well-acted, and well-written. I'm not used to anime feature films that look so digital, but I got used to it quickly. I'm also not used to movies that take a moment to be a music video, which I did not get used to.

I'm glad I saw it, although I'll be puzzling over the thematic meaning of that final act for quite awhile.

I’m just glad you don’t feel like I steered you wrong in seeing it.

Railgun has a new series. It's still cute girls doing high school cute things, only this time it's a high school festival. As with everything in this Index world, it's not all fun and games. Railgun is known for its superheroic action scenes and interesting powers dynamics, so it'll be fun to see what they do this season.

Just watched NinoKuni on netflix. Art style is like Spirited Away but nowhere near as clean. The story is like a world jumping Twin Generals. Two friends take different paths and clash after they level up.

I didn't think it was all that good. It is filled with standard anime tropes and voice actor I heard a thousand times. Lots of stupid for the sake of being stupid. No reason given for things that I think should have been explained. Still I'm glad I watched it.

No idea if it follows the game. I have the game but haven't played it yet.

It does not follow the game. It takes ideas and themes from the game, but not the actual story.

Love Haikyu. Ping Pong and Stars Align are great!
