Let's talk anime.

Oh my... I nearly OD'ed on mecha at the mere thought of trying to watch every last Gundam. On a slight side note, be sure to check out Gurren Lagann. I know it's been mentioned before, but it deserves a look.

I've also been tempted to check out Ninja Scroll: The Series, but I'm afraid it might shit all over one of my favorite movies. Anyone seen it?

NO! NO! NO! Save yourself and go straight to Samurai Champloo.

(Then again, I didn't like the movie either.)

Never caught the Ninja Scroll TV series, but I'd definitely give the nod to recommending Samurai Champloo. Real fun series with excellent style and audio/visual quality.

Samurai Champloo was good but they waste the best scene early on: Fuu running with a pair of bombs hidden in her kimono.

Samurai Champloo is one of my favorite series as well. One good thing about Geneon USA's collapse was that the local (now defunct) Suncoast had to get rid of their stock and I got all the discs 25% off as well as buy 1 get 1 free.

Gurenn Lagann caught my eye when I saw a preview of it after seeing it here. I usually do a wiki search on the titles dropped here to see if it catches my interest.

Third on Samurai Champloo. Great series. The game sucks a huge lung full of wind, though.

That scene made me laugh so hard. A few of the club members were confused at first and then laughed when they saw what they were.

Ignore ALL the Gundam SEED series and go straight to Gundam 00. Much, much better.

The only Gundam series where the protagonist gets some lovin'? Well, if you say so.

Has anyone here seen Cromarte High School? Is it any good? I had it recommended to me.

I've seen about half of the Live Action movie and it was really funny. I've heard Edwin raving about it being good.

Just finished watching "Shijou Saikyou no Deshi Kenichi" (History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi).

Overall really enjoyable. The techniques shown are somewhat (ok, really) exaggerated, but they're based on truth, and it doesn't take itself too seriously. Some good comedy and some good wholesome violence strewn together to make a lovely goulash, with some fanservice on the side (but not too much).

I see that on your list you do not have "12 Kingdoms" ("Twelve Kingdoms", "Juuni Kokki", also known as the Best Anime Series Ever. You mist correct this mistake with all due speed!

Especially since Amazon has the whole 46-ep series in two DVD sets:
http://www.amazon.com/Twelve-Kingdom...

More info:
http://www.12kingdoms.us/

My wife (who is Japanese) and I have been watching less and less anime these days, but here's our favorites:
12 Kingdoms
Fruits Basket (which you list, above)
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (which you list, above)

Other notable series:
Vampire Princess Miyu the TV series (it's like a vampire/demon X-Files)
Battle Athletes TV: I have no idea why I like this anime, because by all accounts I should hate this charming all-girls athletic anime about sportsmanship, friendship, and defeating aliens with Sports, but I love it. It's my only anime guilty pleasure.

One of my favorite series. You should definitely take a look at this series IMO. If you're interested, there's a review here.

Checked out Mnemosynthe last night. Interesting idea, and it looks really good. However, I'm kind of tired of animators celebrating their ability to draw large breasts and then make them bounce. Immortal or not, she's got to have serious back problems.

I also finished Paranoia Agent. That was a fantastic series.

Okay, so I just saw "Casshern" the other day. It's a live action anime/steam-punk/sci-fi, sort of thing. I went over to a friends house to do some work on a website we are designing, and as soon as I get in the door he tells me he may have something I possibly, might enjoy immensely. Knowing my deep and unapologetic love of all things Steam-Punk, he ordered up Casshern on his on-demand service. It looked to be something I could really get into and enjoy, on the surface.
I have to say, pretty much everything I don't like about the anime genre was wrapped up in this movie. Disjointed plot, DBZ type grunt/scream/powerup, nonsensical timeline, white-haired bad guy, and melodramatic ANGST! That being said, the fight scenes were pretty freakin cool, if infrequent. And the visuals, particularly the 3d stuff, looked fantastic. I loved the steam-punkish look to all the buildings and robots. The guys actual suit was pretty out of place though. It looked cool, but more like an organic sci-fi sort of thing, just didn't mesh with all the gothic buildings and machines, etc. And I really like the idea of live action anime, but I just wish they could take out the suck part.
So we finished watching that feeling very dissatisfied, and we ordered up Appleseed:Ex Machina. That made me happy.

I said bag it and just bought the first season of Aquarion. I ran into an offer I couldn't refuse on the box set.

Interesting series. Classic Big Robot all the way, but with an odd mystical sensibility. Animation is gorgeous, music is by Yoko Kanno ('nuff said) and the voice work isn't bad either.

Big caveat: part of the standard 'transformation sequence' is, well... it's awkward to watch. It's not all that explicit or anything, but I'm blushing just trying to figure out how to explain it.

That said, I'll be keeping an eye out for the next season. They were nice enough not to leave us on a really nasty cliff-hanger but I definately want to see where it goes from here.

That was definitely one of those animes to never show to the Anime Club. We made fun of the transformation sequence profusely. For those of you curious... it basically sounds like "They're all having orgasms"... to quote a previous member of the anime club.

But it was a cool series to watch. I really liked it, but it was something I cleared off my external to make room for more.

jmdanny wrote:

Dammit, my external just died and everythings gone. I just started to catch up on One Piece too. :cry

No! External! That reminds me... I should get more DVDs and start moving some of my stuff onto a different format for back up purposes.... >.>

Dammit, my external just died and everythings gone. I just started to catch up on One Piece too.

See, I was trying not to just say it.

Still blushing, though.

That's incredibly cute, momgamer. In the future, lets just refer to "that" as the ultimate-result-of-happy-fun-time, or URHFT.

Back to anime, does anyone know if the new Appleseed movie is out? It looked fantastic.

Ex Machina is out. I saw the first 10 or 15 minutes of it and it looked pretty interesting. I'll probably grab it when/if I find it at good price on Blu-Ray.

Grenn wrote:

Yep, saw it. I really enjoyed it. It's not as heavily tooned as the first one, but I like the look better that way. Great movie.

Friend of mine brought over the copy he got through netflix, and we both enjoyed it. Not to say that I didn't have any issues with it, but it works really well as an action flick. Going back and watching a little of the previous Appleseed movie, you can _really_ see the difference in CGI quality.

My only gripe with Ex Machina is probably also one of its greatest strengths: It's heavy John Woo influence.

While at Sakura Con I got recommended several anime from a vendor I got to know.

One of them is a 10 minute short called Comedy or Kigeki. It's amazing what kind of story they can fit into 10 minutes. The animation is interesting. It reminds me of a black and white movie... or those bad jokes like "What's black and white and red all over?" I believe red is the only other color, but it gives it a bit of flare for a certain parts. I'd say, definitely check it out. And hey, if you don't like it, you've only lost 10 minutes--not a whole 25 or 30 minutes.

momgamer I can pass this one on to you along with some other shorts you might like.

Another she recommended was Hoi-Hoi-san. It's a parody on the Japanese about making a robot for everything. Once I get this, I'll tell you about it. I read the synopsis on AnimeNewsNetwork and laughed... But that's just me.

Quick rundown of the new Spring anime season now airing, in no particular order:

Soul Eater - Great art style and animation have me (almost) totally sold. Follows the not-so-easy life of an up and coming shinigami (Maka) and her weapon / side-kick (Soul). General feel of the show really reminds me of Disgaea (the game series). Would get a 100% uber gold star if wasn't for the fact that Maka's seiyuu gives a pretty weak performance, especially in comparison to the rest of the voice work in the show that feels pretty dead-on.

Kamen no Maid Guy - Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Batman! Here's the mental image: Imagine a brawny, hulking Marvel villain escaped into anime land, was given a maid uniform to fit (frills included), and put in charge of guarding a billionaire's granddaughter. I don't see the plot going anywhere, but it'll still be a hoot.

Vampire Knight - Bishi' vampires take night classes. Humans take day classes at same school. Main character caught in-between. Given the work put into the character designs, and some halfway likable characters, I'm hoping we see something interesting here.

Real Drive - It's Production IG's new project, so I've got high hopes, I'm still kind of lost on where this show is going exactly. Future cyber exploration stuff via deep sea diving?

Kure-nai - Poor high school odd-job guy hired to protect rich little girl. Touching drama ensues? If the characters can keep me engaged I think it'll be a quality title.

To Love-ru - Attractive space girl randomly falls into guy's life. Cliched ecchiness? I'm thinking Shuffle minus the charm, but we'll have to wait and see.

Kanokon (Minor NSFW / Mental health warning on link) - High school + Kitsune + Ecchi. Oh, and a little possession. Are they trying to see how close they can get to straight up hentai on late-night televison?

Waga no Oinarisama - More kitsune, much much less ecchi. Might turn out alright, but I can't help but smack it with the "average" rubber stamp.

Zettai Karen Children - Somewhere between Powerpuff Girls and Kodomo no Jikan, with much more of a tilt towards the Powerpuff end of the spectrum. Might be a fun show. I found a lot of the digital pans used in the first episode to be a bit jarring though. Hopefully they can smooth out their animation techniques.

Special A - High school. Lead girl versus rival / love interest lead guy character. Apply "fun but average" stamp here.

Crystal Blaze (aka Glass Maiden) - I only caught a bit of it so far, but it looks like it might scratch a certain itch if things solidify. Wait and see.

Monochrome Factor - High school guy must use his shadow-self in order to defeat shadow monsters and protect the balance of the light-dark worlds. Possibly average to a bit below average. Seems to be throwing in a bit of yaoi overtones for something a little different.

More later...

Thanks for the tip on Kigegi. Just watched it, and it was quite enjoyable and kinda creepy, especially that intro.

You're welcome.

Check out Hoi-Hoi-san too! It's really funny and is another OAV that's 10 minutes.

Well I've started watching three new series fansubs.

Mnemosyne
This one is certainly an adult anime. Nudity, Sex and Violence. But that's only for parts of it. It's not a Hentai but something along the lines of Speed Grapher in the way it portrays characters. It's a mythical origin anime with mentions of angels and demons, the immortal and a struggle with a evil God or something. Only three episodes in so not quite grasped what is going on. It's very nice to look at and I feel it's very entertaining. Just make sure the kids are asleep.

Real Drive - Sennou Chosashitsu
Ok this one has some talk surrounding it. From what I can tell of the very first episode it was worth the wait. Very interesting beginning and a pretty cool transition from prologue into the story. All I know is it has something to do with this planet they are on and using human psychic powers (intuition) to figure out whats going on in the oceans of the planet. Future sci-fi of course. Great animation style.

Macross Frontier (Macross F)
This is the sequel to Macross Dynamite 7 (OAV) which is in turn the sequel to Macross 7. Needless to say so far this Macross continuation is not, I repeat, NOT like Macross 7 or it's even horribly grotesque sequel Dynamite. A couple of the characters may carry over but that's about it.

Frontier is closer to what the original Macross or at least Macross II or Plus was like and has elements of Macross Zero in it. Which BTW if you have not seen Zero you are missing out completely. It's a fantastic OAV and well worth it.
So I was pleasantly surprised by Frontiers. It gives me a distinct feeling of Rick and the first meeting with Minmay but not similar enough to make be care about it. Still has some great music numbers in it and awesome mech on alien space battle action going on. I have a feeling I'm going to like this Macross sequel quite a bit.

And those are the three anime I'm going to be watching so far. Maybe Bus Gamer and xxxHOLiC: Kei will be added to this list. I'm still attempting to acquire those to watch them. They look interesting at least.

Be prepared to have a mirror held up to your life though...

Wow, I just watched that. It sorta makes fun of you for watching it, but it's great stuff.

Sorry, I don't have time to read all the posts, but if noone else has mentioned it Dokkoida: Ultra Diaper Man, which starts off pretty good, but gets great toward the end.

Does One Piece ever end? Seriously.

There's no reference as just how far they've gone or how far they've to go. They're up to 9 crew members. I don't know if they can add anymore. They've got to be close to the last arc.
