I am currently watching and enjoying Gurren Lagann, for the second time, with the rerelease of the sub-titled version on Crunchyroll.
Yes. Definately one of the Great Anime. With capital letters.

Oh god I remember watching parts of it with my roommate in college. It cross the line from crazy awesome to crazy stupid so many times that you just can't keep up. Then the last episode happens
Not my normal thing but definitely worth watching. Strangely enough I also recently started watching one piece. Surprisingly fun.

I made it through episode 4 or 5 last night. I quite like it too.
Edit: Oh yeah, and the animation is wonderful.
Watched the first 4 tonight. There's so much to like! The gender equality portrayed so far in the society on Gargantia is a notable point of applause from me, and the fact that it's lasted this far without falling trap to any eye-roll inducing tropes means I have really high hopes for where it might be going.
So I just recently finished watching Ergo Proxy with a buddy of mine. Good show, but man is it obtuse sometimes. I had to go online after watching the last episode to figure out what exactly was going on, and even then I'm not fully certain I understand.

Episode 5:
Episode 5 does the whole beach/swimsuit thing which is a little annoying. It's actually a good episode if you ignore that, though. There is some decent character and relationship development.
Watched the first 2 episodes of Gurren Lagann last night. Yeah, it's pretty good.
Arata the Legend is a new addition to my line up, it looks interesting though I've yet to actually watch it...
So far really enjoying it, some moments have reminded me of the more moving parts of Fairy Tail. Glad I decided to test it out!
Finished lots more of Railgun. Not to be watched in one sitting. Shirai's sexual assaults are played for laughs, but I could only really take about 4 episodes at a time. YMMV. It's not really that much worse than normal anime fanservice. It's just setting me off for some reason. Maybe I'm just identifying too much with the protagonist.
The rest of it is quite, quite good. I like the character and plot developments. I love the imaginative way characters use their one power in various ways. They don't shy away from logical consequences either. A teleporter doesn't sound like a lethal enforcer until she starts teleporting foreign objects into other people's bodies.
Strangely enough I also recently started watching one piece. Surprisingly fun.
It probably doesn't get mentioned much anymore, but One Piece is hands down my favorite anime, and for good reason. That show is excellent.

Yeah, One Piece really only gets better. My favorite as well. And the filler arcs aren't terribad, which is saying a lot.

The way that anime scales is a thing of beauty. You go from digging in the dirt to practically punching holes in universes and don't lose sight of the character's humanity and hope. I love that show..
I stumbled into Shigofumi on Hulu recently. I know it's six years old, and it feels like sometimes it's best to keep up with what's new. But, this series is really enjoyable to me so far.
Hey guys, I'm new to the anime section of GWJ, but thought I'd drop in.
A friend recommended From the New World (Shin Sekai Yori) to me and I was wondering if anyone else had seen it yet. It aired a couple seasons ago.

It's just okay. It's got a very cool style to it. The premise is interesting. I made it through 17 episodes so far, but it has been a bit of a slog. The problem is with the character development. Initially, a lot of characters disappear for various reasons. The main character is difficult to relate to as well. It's just missing something (at least coming to it from the standpoint of an American).

I watched the first 5 episodes i think, it was meh. Not bad, but not good enough for me to keep interested and watching. I may get around to watching the rest eventually.
Oh good lord watched the first three episodes of the Devil is a part timer. It's hilarious... I think the language they speak in Isla Ente is Hungarian.

Been watching and loving Attack on Titan. Any other action adult themed anime out that's good these days? It's been a long time since I kept up with the anime scene and just now started watching again after a bunch of recommendations about Attack on Titan. I have a sub to crunchyroll so I can check out any thing on there. I looked around but the selection is overwhelming and a lot of them seemed to be typical "anime high school drama love/action" not really my cup of tea. I tried Valvrave the Liberator and wasn't a fan.
Finished Railgun. It's different. Magical girl anime tends to have a central theme as well as a unified plot. Railgun isn't as focused. Each arc is more of a plot or character study, and there's no strong overarching plot to tie them together. That gives it more of that Hollywood series feel where episodes are tied by character, theme, and location but without a strong compelling season plot.
It's kind of in between a slice of life and a story anime.
It's thankfully not a battle anime. There were several instances where it could have gone that way but they didn't. Railgun is 3rd most powerful for a reason and whenever she feels like she needs to end things quickly, she's as OP as she is supposed to be.
I'm assuming I'm in decent company watching on crunchyroll, but a new site just opened up that's backed by a few big anime studios (Aniplex and Sunrise to name a couple), and they're currently boasting free watching online. The site is called Daisuki.net. It'll be interesting to see how they fair. They've currently got about 5 or so episodes of a couple series.
Major sale on all Ghibli bluray and DVDs on Amazon!!! Go go go!
For most items they are at the lowest prices they've been since release (I love camelcamelcamel.com for price watching).
I picked up Porco Rosso, Pom Poko, and the Cat Returns on DVD. On bluray I got Castle in the Sky, Arrietty, and Whisperer of the Heart.
I wish they would release Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away on bluray!

Oof, yeah, what's up with that? I see that Howl's Moving castle and My Neighbor Totoro are on Blu-ray now although they don't seem to be a part of that sale. I don't want to spend money on Blu-rays right now, but I'll definitely have to get all of them at some point.
was hoping to see Howl's Moving Castle, but I guess I'll just wait for the Blu-ray release of it.
It's out but not a part of that sale.
Crunchyroll mentioned that the US release of From Up on Poppy Hill is now on Amazon for preorder with a release date of September 3.
Edit: Oops! Howl's is just a preorder. Still, it's only a few days away.

Sadly it never came to my theatres (even the arts theatre)! Did you see it, Tuffalo?
Not yet! I will just get the Blu-ray when it comes out. Not gonna pirate it.
Hello anime fans. Any recommendations for someone who rewatches Serial Experiments Lain at least once a year, because it's that awesome. I also enjoyed Boogiepop Phantom and liked When They Cry and Baccano!

Check out Dennō Coil and Haibane Renmei(same creator as Lain). both slant a bit younger than Lain and are a lighter, more 'slice of life' affair but definitely great works, Coil sharing some of the cyber elements of Lain whereas Haibane is straight up fairy tale.
On the opposite side, heading towards the harder edge of cyber-fiction, there's the masterpiece that is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. (it hard for me to not oversell it, but this is my favourite piece of fiction ever, all forms and formats combined)

Edit: felt those suggestions didn't really cover the psychological/mindtrip aspects of Lain so also going to throw in Paranoia Agent from Satoshi Kon(Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paprika)
