Let's talk anime.

Pages

I'm out of new things to watch and we might as well get some discussions going. All I have left is Naruto and Bleach, and while enjoyable at first both have fallen quite far from the quality they both started at.

Honey and Clover is sadly over, and the ending was very unexpected for me. Eureka Seven is another one I recently finish but I have mixed feelings about this one since I watched it over the span of a year rather than all at once.

Anything new past or present that I should see?

Well, the good news is that the Naruto fillers are supposed to be finished with the next coming episode... That and Death Note just started, awesome manga.

Naruto is great when the story arc isn't filler.

I don't know what you've watched previously but here are my favorite animes I've ever watched and my opinions:

I just got into One Piece due to some comment Certis said a while back. I've actually watched about 120 episodes in the past 2 weeks(No Fillers).

Full Metal Alchemist is very good, I feel ashamed it took me till this summer to watch it.

Samurai Champloo is a fun couple episodes.

Rurouni Kenshin is great for the first half of the series, it's alright for the second half.

Inuyasha is good but just keeps going and going.

Oh and I dunno if Avatar counts as it's not japanese, certainly has anime style, but it is really good after the first couple episodes, might be my favorite animated show currently.

I have a feeling I'm just saying shows you've watched before as I'm pretty "mainstream" in which anime I watch.

Without having any idea what you've already seen, nor what you tend to like, you're going to see a lot of know favorites get mentioned in this thread.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (the Solid State Society film and potentially more goodness have yet to make it to our shores)
Cowboy Bebop
Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventure
Full Metal Panic (opinions are sharply divided over these three series, but give it a shot)
FullMetal Alchemist (it has its flaws, but it's quite well done)
Outlaw Star
Fruits Basket (if it doesn't give you warm fuzzy feelings, you're a Cylon)

You might want to give some of the classics like El-Hazard, Evangelion, and Escaflowne a trial if you've never run across them.

And don't ignore the American stuff, the DC Animated Universe (the original Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited) has a very high and consistent level of quality with definite character progression and story arcs running within and across the series. And although I haven't seen a lot of them myself, Invader Zim and Avatar have been very enjoyable.

I'm a bit out of date when it comes to anime but here are some of my favorites from many years ago...

Slayers
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Record of Lodoss War
Ninja Scroll (not the horrid sequels though)
Cowboy Bebop
Sorcerer Hunters
Vision of Escaflowne
Macross Plus

I forgot to mention that I am watching One Piece so lets add that.

Outside of that insane list above:

Desert Punk
Samurai 7 (lots of good action and based on Kursawa's film)
Arcade Gamer Fubuki (silly silly crap, but good silly silly crap; no wives/SO tho unless she likes anime there's way way too many pantsu and upskirts to have to explain to a novice)
Karas: The Prophecy (and in April you can go on to Karas: The Revelation)
Avalon (if you can find it here)
Astroboy (full set of the 2003 version is good stuff)
Gasaraki (Noh plays and mechs; what's not to like?)
Planetes
Now and Then, Here and There
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

Oh who am I kidding; see http://www.gamerdad.com/detail.cfm?i... and http://www.gamerdad.com/detail.cfm?i... and http://www.gamerdad.com/detail.cfm?i...

The links are to mini-reviews from a parent's viewpoint, but since you're a grown up you're all good. There's a fair amount of overlap with the list above, but there's definately some new territory in there.

Naruto.... *shudder* I just don't understand the fascination with that show. The main character, from what I've seen at least, is a petulant, annoying, whiny, annoying little wretch, and I don't see how anybody could like him in the slightest.

You might want to try Speed Grapher. I've only seen one episode and it seems interesting. **WARNING: It isn't hentai, but certain scenes come very close.**

Not that I've watched a ton of anime, but one I've always liked was Iria: Zeiram the Animation. If I remember right, it's a trilogy of sorts. Figured I'd mention it since no one else has (thinking that it means either none of you have seen it, or it's as popular around here as Terry Goodkind).

That movie is fantastic. The animated version. There was live action one as well, but it wasn't particularly good ;). Iria is excellent SciFi, and one of the first animes the SciFi networked picked up when they started running anime on Saturday mornings back in the early/mid 90's when the channel started. That, along with A-Ko, Akira, and 3x3 Eyes were my first animes, and I still love them all very much.

That list above is by no means comprehensive as everything is just off the top of my head. I know for a fact I'm missing a bunch like the mentioned Samurai 7, Gasaraki, Now and then, here and there which will now be added.

An oldie but a goodie: Battle Angel (Alita).
Another oldie I have always had a soft spot for: All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku

Phew... was worried that would be another suggestion of mine that's hated here (never saw the live action version, though I can't imagine how anyone thought that was a good idea... ). Good to find out I'm not alone. I used to watch a lot of that Sat. morning Scifi anime, but Iria is the only one I can really remember watching.

*beams*
I love when these threads pop up so I can geek out with fellow otaku.

I dont have a list, I cant remember what I ate for dinner let alone anime I've watched from years ago, but I'm currently watching: (reccomended titles in bold)

Ouran Host Club
Honey and Clover
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Le Chevalier D'Eon
Simoun
Paradise Kiss

Death note
D.Grayman
Naruto*groans*
Negima?!
009-1
Pumpkin Scissors
Sumomo mo Momo mo
Monster
Ebichu
Akazukin ChaCha
Ergo Proxy
Speed Grapher
Elfen Lied
and a bunch of Dorama, comedy and misc live action series.

I run a group in town that shows anime once a month and gets together for dinner once a month for the 18-35yr age group. It's a pretty interesting mix, as we've managed to avoid getting too many "creepy loner" types..and there are quite a few intelligent girls who bring thier boyfriends and such to our screenings.

I used to be in an anime club back in college and it was a bunch of fat sweaty virgins sitting in an attic of a dorm making sexual references at Project A-Ko and laughing in binary. I don't miss those days.

Laughing in binary? Wow, they were almost as geeky as my friends and I. We laughed in electrical pulses.

Check out Green Mile Run and you HAVE to watch Metropolis it is amazing.

My wife and I fully endorse the first several Azumanga Daioh DVDs, before it got too culturally specific and we stopped getting the jokes. Project A-Ko too. Any other funny girl-centric ones like that out there?

I actually kind of liked the live action version, as it's pretty rare to see live-action Asian SF movies and its weirdness was delightful. Not a good movie, necessarily, but a fun novelty.

I still have no idea why they stopped running their Saturday anime. It was pretty popular with a highly desirable demographic, and it can't have been that expensive to get the television rights to old B-list movies.

I got the new Ghost In The Shell: Standalone Complex: Solid State Society DVD already, planning to watch it this weekend. Didn't like the preview trailer much, though, so I don't have high expectations (which is also true for the genre as a whole, actually). You know the producers are scrapping the bottom of the barrel when the title has TWO columns in it AND a gratuituous alliteration. Next stop: add "Zero" to the end in the next installment.

And you know they'll do just that.

Grenadier (DVD)
Demonbane (Fansub)
Trinity Blood (Fansub, DVD might be out too)
The Third (Fansub)
Tactical Roar (Fansub)
Utawaremono (Fansub) <-- I've never seen an anime with more of a Shining Force vibe
D.Gray Man (Fansub)

Those are the ones that come to mind.

Excuse me while i go fire up the torrent...

*ahem* I have been very out of touch with anime, but I've seen some "obscure" unlicensed anime that many may not know about. Try Full Moon wo Sagash*te (searching for the full moon), yeah it's a little girly but it's a touching series for those who are sick of blood and gore all the time.

Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars are also very excellent... it does sci-fi anime right.

For a good, fun, laugh out loud experience, I suggest Yakitate Japan.

Thanks Edwin, I've been meaning to make a few more recommendations but was too lazy to start a thread myself!

Gao Gai Gar & Gao Gai Gar Final

Have you ever watched a giant robot anime with heavy emphasis on stock animation sequences? Gao Gai Gar is a prime example of this type of anime. At first, it is apparent that the series is geared toward kids, what with the cartoonish design on enemy robot monster and the unrealistically optimistic main characters. However, as the series pushes on, it begins to take on a more serious tone. Fights begin to feel like real struggles to the death. Our heroes get themselves nearly killed or apparently killed for a few times. They become heavily damaged on many levels, and many times it just seems like they're throwing their half-dead bodies against the inconquerable odds. There are some really heavy materials here, though not disgustingly so, as the series still has to cater to kids. No brainy stuff, but it's all good fun.

Mushishi

It is the exact opposite of Gao Gai Gar. The series is more a collection of short stories of unrelated people all over an earlier-time Japan, with the only link being the main character, as well as the strange beings called "Mushi". The Mushis are sort of the plot devices of the series. They are, like I said, unusual beings. They cannot be seen by most, and are often responsible for wildly fantastic phenomenons that cannot be easily explained by science. The main character is one of the few who are capable of seeing the Mushis in action, and he devotes his life to studying the creatures. Each episode, he visits a different village, meets a different type of Mushi, and encounter the people whose way of life are affected by the behaviors of the Mushi.

The interactions between people and Mushi are the focus of the series. As an example, a type of Mushi is able to consume the body of a creature and revert it back to the embryonic stage, packaged in little green seeds. People of a village nearby take advantage of this feature, and should a time come when someone passes away, they will leave the body far beyond the shore on a small boat, only to return the second day to retrieve the "seed". They then have a woman consume the seed, and let the dead be reborn. The moral questions raised by this practice are obvious. Other episodes of the series all share a similar approach. Some of them are shocking, others almost romantic, but each one is as thought-provoking as the next.

The series is slow-paced and poetic, a good distraction from the usual anime fanfare.

Akazukin Chacha

Little girl Chacha is the disciple of the best Magician in the world, but she still fails her spells more often than not. Her teacher Seravy promises to send her to school as a reward if she can cast a spell correctly, because kids LOVE to go to school! So she passes the test and is ready to go to school. Her warewolf friend Rya, who really transforms into a puppy rather than a menacing wolf, goes along with her. And it just goes on and on and on.

Chacha was part of my childhood memories. Thanks to nostalgia, the series doesn't look aged to me, and humor is as good as it was 12 years ago. It's a light-hearted series, with some rare emotional moments. It's meant for kids, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it too.

It's not lisenced in the States. All hail YouTube.

Ouran Highschool Host Club

I'll be honest. Until near the end, the first episode is going to freak you out. Fujioka Haruhi is a special status student accepted into Ouran Academy, a high school strictly for the rich. He stumbled across a group of super hawt guys who call themselves the "Host Club". They entertain the ladies with their dashing good looks, and make money. Yup, they're so rich and have so much free time they can do whatever they want, so they choose to entertain the ladies. To Haruhi's misfortune, he broke a very expensive vase and had to pay off his debt by becoming the club's workhorse.

And then they found out that Haruhi's actually pretty good looking, so he became a regular host. And then they found out that Haruhi's actually a girl. Not only that, a really pretty girl who isn't rich and is smart and poor in a completely exotic way. Now they're interested. The series gets over the superficial setting soon enough, and character development comes into place. The plot is often silly, but leaves enough room for the emotional moments. It's one of the most popular series on torrent, and just ended about a month ago. Definitely worth a look.

EDIT:

@ Ganguro
How's Chevalier d'Eon? I watched the first episode and really liked the atmosphere (the luxurious 5.1 soundtrack helped!). But decided to drop it in favor of other stuff. How is it?

I have nothing to add to this thread, but I'll second the recommendations of Samurai Champloo (probably my favorite anime ever) and Rurouni Kenshin (which does indeed drop off for the final 1/3rd of the series). Also Cowboy Bebop, Gasaraki, Scrapped Princess, and Peacemaker Kurogane.

I've seen Gao Gai Gar and did not like it at all. I hated Speed Grapher. I got to episode thirteen and just absolutely hated it.

So far I have to check out based on your recommendations

Ooh, goody, another anime thread.

I've got, like, 80gb of unwatched anime on my machine at home. Every time I look at that drive, I feel bad that I've never bothered to watch any of it.

How's Blood+ working out for anyone? The movie's a little weird, but I heard good things about the show.

I just started Tsukuyomi the other day, and it's good so far. Two episodes into Louie the Rune Soldier (or whatever it's called) I stopped watching it, but not because I didn't like it. I remember a discussion around here about Pani Poni Dash and its sequels/prequels/brethren/whatever being absolutely bizarre; I've been meaning to check them out just to see but haven't gotten to it yet. Gunslinger Girl gets my attention, too, but I have yet to start it.

Any recommendations mainly in the fantasy genre? I'm not such a huge fan of mecha, but SF stuff is okay too (I love, love, love Iria). I remember hearing about a relatively recent anime called something like This Ugly Yet Beautiful World and thought it sounded interesting, but put it on hold while I waited for recommendations.

Actually...anyone have torrents for Elfen Lied? Every one I try to get dies around the 80% mark. (Even just four or five episodes is fine, just to see if I like it.)

Elfen Lied is very good. Very lots of blood, brains, and severed limbs but its good. I know This Ugly Yet Beautiful World by its Japanese name and I like it. Not as much as Elfen Lied but it was quite enjoyable and both are recommended for watching.

Rurouni Kenshin (which does indeed drop off for the final 1/3rd of the series).

It does, mainly because the manga's author wasn't done with the next parts of the story, and so the show's animators just started making stuff up. It's really really bad.

The actual Revenge arc is pretty good, if just more classic Rurouni Kenshin.

Might I also recommend Genshiken

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genshiken

Be prepared to have a mirror held up to your life though...

Also for the space faring crowd, Crest of the Stars was ok. For space anime done right see Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Gunbuster (torrent only).

Everything else, everyone's already mentioned...

Edwin - I think you missed Planetes in there. And judging by the rest of your list I think you might like it.

Anyone here seen Wolf's Rain and care to comment? My daughters want to start getting it.
