GWJ OOTP League Thread

I go apartment hunting for a day and look what happens.

So the majority is learning towards sending in their picks and having me sim it then? I'll check and make sure the drafting rankings are right for everyone, but i'm happy to postpone the sim 24 hours just so we're all on the same page.

Moneyball was a good movie. Very enjoyable.

Pred,
Exported new file with players in draft list. What is odd to me is that there are more players to choose from in "search all players" but can't find way to put on draft list. ??
Hope you found an apartment. Not always an ez task.
Really enjoyed Moneyball.
Thanks

Sounds good... especially since I was at a rock show last night and forgot to update my league file!

So I put players on the draft list and did a second ftp upload (my first one I had not done the draft list). I'm learning!

Wait, WTF? My team spends 128 million on scouting?

Oh, seems all top countries were checked from the outset. Fixing that.

Alright, according to my import, i've got files from everyone except Buffalo. I'm going to wait until Sunday night, because I want everyone to have their stuff in in time, and i'm being nice. Buffalo, you've got until midnight Sunday. If your file isn't uploaded by then, you're relying on your scouting director to make the right moves.

Alright, new file, new week. The draft, she is done.

Here's how Round One of the draft shook out:

Round 1, Pick 1 - San Diego Surfers: SP Rubén Rojas
Round 1, Pick 2 - Dallas Dirigibles: SP Sergio Salas
Round 1, Pick 3 - Boston Whiteflags: CF Javier Berroa
Round 1, Pick 4 - Denver Atoms: CF Will Petty
Round 1, Pick 5 - Seattle Rain: SS Vicente Fuentes
Round 1, Pick 6 - Pittsburgh Fighting Pierogies: SP Pedro Casillas
Round 1, Pick 7 - Atlanta Knights: SP Miguel Nájera
Round 1, Pick 8 - New Orleans Tsunami: CF Ken Horn
Round 1, Pick 9 - Brooklyn Sandwiches: RF James Wilson
Round 1, Pick 10 - Charlotte Angels: SP Brad Montgomery
Round 1, Pick 11 - Baltimore Bridgeburners: CF David Harris
Round 1, Pick 12 - Buffalo Breakfast Burritos: SP Cullen Wolfe
Round 1, Pick 13 - Los Angeles Millionaires: C Stephen Johnson
Round 1, Pick 14 - MIami Prodigy: SP Doug Moran
Round 1, Pick 15 - Phoenix Henchmen: LF Matt Billings
Round 1, Pick 16 - Vancouver Kings: RF Monty Vogel

Another 4-2 week for us in Vancouver, building our lead to 6 1/2 games, including a 1-0 win in 13 innings over Brooklyn. Otherwise, a pretty blase week. Denver and Charlotte are on 4 and 6 game winning streaks, respectively, while Boston's on a 4-game schnide (I should mention those four losses were all to Denver, who swept them).

Games of the Week (in which I chose a few games that interested me on some level):

6/13 - Baltimore annihilates Denver by scoring 3 runs in the 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th innings on the way to a 14-0 victory. Oddly, no Baltimore player had more than two hits. Also on this day, San Diego's Edward Carruth finally gets into the wins column after a 4-2 win over New Orleans. Carruth may be the angriest pitcher in the league, despite a 2.45 ERA, he's getting 1.77 runs in support each game.

6/19 - The 3rd best performance of the day belongs to Charlotte's Jorge Vargo, who managed 4 RBIs, despite only getting one hit (and it wasn't a grand slam).

The All-Star game is less than a month away now, and there are already some names you can pencil in for the chance to represent their league. As far as series' of interest go, stay tuned for later this week when division leaders Baltimore and Vancouver will go at it, and see if Daisuke Kodo can keep his ERA under 2.00 (he's managed to do this without ever having a game score above 80 this season).

I need to rob a bank or have a real heart to heart with ownership:)

Thanks Pred!

Round 1, Pick 11 - Baltimore Bridgeburners: CF David Harris

Told ya my scout knew what the hell he was doing. We need help in the outfield (or a starting pitcher, but everyone always needs more of those) and we got some help out there.

6/19 - The 3rd best performance of the day belongs to Charlotte's Jorge Vargo, who managed 4 RBIs, despite only getting one hit (and it wasn't a grand slam).

What the ... ? Will have to check this out.

Prognosis is in on Brooklyn outfielder Leo Davis, he of the .351 average, 11 home runs, and 48 RBIs. Broken ankle, 6 weeks! Somone rip those f*cking sprinklers out from the outfield grass! I can't keep going like this!

Gawd. I have caught a big fish, but alas I feel my net is not wide enough to reel him in. But we shall see...

Sorry I've been incommunicado lately. Work has been driving me nuts. /excuse

The Pierogies are sticking around a tad below .500. Looking forward to the big series against division rival the Brooklyn Sandwiches and trying to gain some ground.

I'll be the first to admit, I suck at managing my team's finances. I think I have some money to spare but I'm not exactly sure where/who to spend it on. Most of my current players are in a multi-year contracts (the ones that are worth it) so should I look for big name players to trade for if I do indeed 'have money to burn?'

Also, can someone give me run down how I'm suppose to develop my minor league players? Short of controlling my developmental budget, which you can only change in the offseason, is there anything else I can do?

Finally, I know everyone is looking for OF help, I have no answers there, but if anyone is in the market to off-load a quality IF (anywhere except 3B) I'm here to listen.

All I do is manage their rosters a bit, nothing too serious. The Minor League report gives you an idea of when players are ready to be moved around.

With as many levels to the minors as we have I just let the AI deal with things. I keep an eye on it and move people I want to, but otherwise I let the AI do things.

Oh, shortlist prospects you like. That way you'll get updates on them.

Hey Pred, did you get my PM?

When's the next sim? I got a little thrown and forgot to update my files for the usual Monday flip, yet I have to do some shuffling to account for Leo Davis's DL time.

Next sim should be the regularly scheduled Friday run I would think.

I did. I'm a smidge busy, so if you've dropped me a line recently, excuse me, i'll try and get back to you tonight.

Yeah, we're skipping the Monday this week and bumping it back to Friday. If people want, I can do two weeks on Friday to make up for lost time.

No worries, I understand busy.

'smidge'? I think your busy as heck all the time:)

Two week sim sounds good to me. Just have to have all positions properly backed up in case of injury (which I admit I'm guilty of always not filling in).

Round 1, Pick 1 - San Diego Surfers: SP Rubén Rojas
Round 1, Pick 2 - Dallas Dirigibles: SP Sergio Salas

Some fine pitching duels in our division's future if we can both sign them.

After looking even more closely at Rojas, I really can't understand(!) how he was rated so high in the draft.

Drafted for potential? I was just checking out team finances and San Diego is paying $44m for scouting costs? What happened there? Almost every other team is in the $4-6m range.

That's an issue i'm going to deal with. A few user-operated teams have ridiculous scouting issues caused by a bug in one of the game's earlier builds that patches prevent, but do not fix. I'm going to make it up to those owners though (CPU included), probably by comparing your budget against the league average and reimbursing you the difference in cash. It's not a perfect fix, but it's totally unfair to have several teams who are all but financially shackled by scouting (I assume, for some of the prices, those teams were outfitting all their scouts with their own personal Lamborghinis.

Breadmanben, you have an e-mail, Nightmare, you have a PM. IF anyone else has any concerns/issues/notes, lemme know.

Newest Update (#5) is out. We should wait for Pred's word to update I suppose.

Novocain wrote:

Maybe. Some GM's may not get to the Update by tonight's upload. But as you say, we'll see what comment's Pred makes.

If everyone can do the update today, that'd be grand. If you'd like to re-upload your team, feel free, it's no harm or hindrance.

Done and ftp'ing.

I'm updated and re-uploaded. Looking forward to the sim results.

Alright, we're introducing two new GMs this week, so say hello to Breadmanben and Nightmare! I dearly look forward to taking joy in your every failure and all-consuming jealousy of your successes. Since they're new to the league and their teams, i'm only going stick with the one-week sim process today, and for the future. (Both of you have e-mail, by the way.)

Now, since we're almost to mid-season, i'm going to say that if anyone else would like to join our merry cabal, you have until the in-game All-Star break to do so. That's two more sims, so Monday and Friday. After that, you'll have to wait until the offseason. But we welcome you.

Sidenote: Are any other Goodjers lurking this thread? I'm just curious.

NOTEY NOTE NOTE: Seattle, I went in and took a look. Your scouting issue isn't a bug, as I thought, it's that you have every single nation with a baseball quality of "Excellent" set to be scouted. Unticking them and choosing a few more reasonable nations from all the various tiers brought your Scouting budget down to $5M and, according to your front office screen, opened up significant cash for Extensions and FA's, and put your season profit/loss into the black (or the green in this case). There was a bug that screwed financials, but now it's fixed. So, if the changes I made don't show up in the game once you load the league (only one nation with an "Excellent" baseball quality should be being scouted), do what I did and adjust. As a gift to ameliorate things however, I've placed a reasonable sum of money into your coffers to make up some of the difference you might have missed.

Dear Buffalo: 1B Miguel Molina was DFA'ed, and had a Major League Contract. He wasn't on the 40 man roster, which was full, so I couldn't demote him or put him on the ML roster. So I released a one-star RF you had on the 40-man roster to make space for Molina, who is back on the ML roster.

Baltimore, I had to do something similar for you. Your guy refused the demotion however, so I released him for you. Everyone, please remember, if the dude has a Major League contract, HE MUST BE ON THE 40-MAN ROSTER. Such is the way of things. So you may hate him, you may want to demote him, but unless you wanna release him, he's gotta be on the 40-man.

These are the kind of things I have to do to keep the sim going, so please everyone, take note. If my sim stops because you've got some 2 1/2 star dude DFA'ed, i'm going to fix it. I'm not going to try and hurt you, but i'm going to McGyver it so I can get the sim done.

But anyway, the new league file is up!

WEEKLY WRAP-UP: Anyway, another week gone, and we're not far away from the All-Star teams getting announced. Who's been your best players so far this season? And who's made you want to strangle them with piano wire? Personally, I get a kick out of looking at my current pitching staff. The records go 12-3, 10-0, 5-6, and then I've been forced to call up a rookie due to injuries. I also may be playing a Right Fielder at 2B if we take any more injuries there. That said, our MVP is Miguel Angel Cortez. Cortez is arguably the #1 ace in baseball right now (he leads the league in Wins, ERA and pitcher WAR) and has given us two crap starts in the last two months.

That said, Vancouver has been hoarding as much young talent as we can, and i'm growing increasingly afraid of what'll happen when the Rule 5 draft rolls around.

Not much change to the status quo this week, although Phoenix's Luis Rivera continues to flirt with history, batting .405 moving into July with a ridiculous .450 OBP. Big ups to the batters this week though, with Miami's Chris Howard putting in a 4-4, 4 RBI, 2 HR day, Buffalo's Mark Holmes going 3-3 with 3 RBIs and 2 HRs, and Miami's Vance Palmer managing 5 RBIs in 3 hits.

Did you know that the highest single-game strikeout total in our season so far is 13 by Boston's Francis Riley in a losing effort against Buffalo?

Games I Enjoyed This Week:

6/20 - Eight pitchers, nineteen hits but only three runs as Pittsburgh tops Brooklyn in the 11th 2-1.

6/23 - Ten pitchers, nineteen hits, and seven runs as Pittsburgh and Brooklyn run long again, going to 13 innings before the boys from Kings County win it on a Alberto Montoya Triple.

6/26 - Six runs in the final three innings sets up a fun finish as Seattle's late comeback attempt falls short against Boston, the rain lose 6-5.

POWER RANKING CHEERS AND JEERS:

Cheers for Buffalo and Los Angeles, who are playing 5 and 7 games over their projected records so far, respectively. Jeers for Dallas and Boston, who are 4 and 6 games beneath where they're projected to be. Commiserations to Brooklyn, who despite the 2nd best team ERA in the league, are 12th in this week's power rankings.

But yeah, RE: GM Chatter. I shouldn't be the only one spinning yarns about your team when it's 2:47 AM and i've been drinking! Feel free to tell a story, come up with some ludicrous explanation of why your RF is in a slump or which players you'd like shot (not fatally, just grazed). Especially now with the trade deadline a month away, I wanna see some chatter. I'm enjoying myself, but there's a lot more fun to be had if we're going back and forth and praising/hating our players as we go along.
