GWJ OOTP League Thread

Well, I must say, my team is spending millions upon millions on scouting and I just pulled up a early 20's starting pitcher prospect who I can plug in right now. The problem? He wants $8.5 mil a year right off the bat. Ouch.

One of the things that ostensibly will be covered in Build 23 is some spending issues, but i'm going to wait on updating until the "Official" patch is released.

I'm running a little experiment that some of you might be interested in, so I thought I'd share.

After seeing the CPU make some truly odd decisions on reliever usage (ie using the setup man, followed by several middle relievers before bringing on the closer), along with a general disdain for the way bullpens are used today, I have no relievers set up in any role on my pitching staff other than mop-up relievers. I want to see if some of the odd decisions are the result of the CPU trying to run a "saber bullpen", and if it is capable of doing so. I plan to track the leverage index at which each reliever enters (and possibly leaves) the game. Ideally, the best relievers will be brought on in high leverage situations. Leverage index is a standard sabermetric stat that can be looked up in tables. I may track a few other advanced stats along with this, but that's the jist of the experiment. I'll keep you guys updated (if you care).

I care, as my starters aren't all that great, while I like my bullpen.

Alright, so, we are a week ahead.

Brooklyn, San Diego, the game indicated that both of your export files were dated incorrectly (i.e. - they weren't from the most recent in-game date, which was 4/18, and is now 4/25). Please make sure when you download the new league file (note: you should be able to do this from inside OOTP itself) that the game represents the correct date, and that the file uploads correctly. If anything happens that screws it up, let me know.

For those of you wondering, New Orleans is batting a league-leading .306, while Vancouver's 3.06 team ERA leads everyone.

Pittsburgh, your seasonal outlook is so off financially, if this isn't fixed by the game (or by a later patch), i'll bring you to $0 at the end of the season to keep things fair. Clearly, the game's gone berzerk with your scouting budget, but I think that's something Build 23 should fix.

Well, that foreign guy took my lower offer. I'm surprised. So, now I'm contracted to him for three years, let's hope I didn't just cripple my finances for the next three years. If he turns out to be AJ Burnett ...

If anyone's feeling bad about their team's performance, I'd just like to add that I got beat 19-0 this week in one game, and the other team left 8 runners on base. Things can always get worse

Do I have to upload even if I have no changes?

I would.

Ok, cool. I will get the hang of this.

Yeah, my team is streaky like that. I wish they wouldn't all get hot on the same day.

With my $280 million (!!!!) yearly scouting budget, you'd think my Pittsburgh Fighting Pierogies would be better than 8-12.

Hmmm. I just downloaded this morning as you suggested. I will do it again and make sure I'm on 4/18. Ihadn't realized I needed to turn right around and export the file.

edit: I just checked and I'm on the 4/25 date. So I'm confused. So do I export this?

Yes. You up to date now.

Yeah, my scouting budget is likewise huge, but it's gonna take some time to develop those prospects. While I would like to win this year, I realize that I've probably got a .500 team (at best) and therefore I'm planning for the future and trying some things I wouldn't otherwise dare.

Couple questions: (yes, I'm back in:)

1) Is there going to be interleague play?

2) How do you fire your main scout and get another one (and get a feel for their potential at whatever level they are coaching at presently)?

1.) No.

2.) I believe there's a menu at the bottom, that's labled "Action" or "Person Profile" or something that will allow you to fire a scout (once you're viewing his profile page, of course). As far as getting an idea how how they're scouting? Their ability is shown to you (Poor, Fair, Average, Good, etc.) and you've got to judge his assessments based on that.

Friday's the next sim. Are we enjoying ourselves thus far? Concerns? Suggestions?

I'm all good. Just need some more sims and time with the teams to get use to players and everything. The initial learning curve in a fictional league and all that jazz.

Thanks Pred'. It's looking for a talent pool of coaches that is my main thing. If you look at the successful teams thus far (albeit it's very early), there scouts has, 'excellent' or 'very good' qualities. Whereas others, including my team have mediocre scouts.

I imagine that this is part of the AI's job, but if I see a minor league pitcher that is doing well, in
a reliever role, but has good stamina, better then some of my present starters. I would like to groom him to a starter role, but he only has a couple pitches. So it's up to my scouts and minor league managers (AI) to see this and get him to learn a pitch or two more? I have not control in this, correct?

Really enjoying it. Thanks(!) again for helping me with my bumper start.

Prederick wrote:

Absolutely enjoying things so far. I could move a bit quicker (maybe 3 sims a week) but I realize that might be too much to manage for some.

Anything we (team owners) can do to make your life a bit easier, other than making sure we have team files uploaded each week? And how about the cost of the website you're using, can we chip in for that?

EDIT: See this thread on the OOTP12 boards. Looks like some will randomly pick up a 3rd, 4th pitch when coming up through the minors, but it's not something you can specifically develop in them.

Cool. Thanks!

Nah, you guys have been great. HOWEVUH:

There may be some sim delays this weekend due to Hurricane Irene and my job. I'm in media, so I'll be traveling to an area the storm's pretty much assured to hit to do work, and may not be near my home PC for a while, so stay tuned.

Not a problem. Keep us posted. Be safe and take care!

Back home! Wet, windblown, but no worse for the wear. I'm totally gassed, and have a few things to do first, but i'm going to try my best to have the league file updated tonight, at worst, by tomorrow evening.

Welcome back safe and sound. Hot shower, brandy and shut-eye will charge those batteries in no time (or whatever beverage of choice:))

Whenever's clever. I don't think anyone is going to complain about you getting other parts of your life back in order before OOTP.

New files/reports are up!

Baltimore, you had a dude that you'd DFA'd and taken off the 40-man roster, however he had a major league contract. Players with ML contracts must be on the 40-man roster if you want to demote them, and you also must check if the player is out of option years (this one was). So, for now, I gave him one more option year and placed him in your AAA team.

PLEASE NOTE: I will be doing this for this season, and this season only until we all understand what's up, because these kind of issues will stop the sim in its tracks and give me a sad face. Moreover, I have made a league tweak, because some things were weird. Since the sim takes seven days, the league waive period has been upped to eight days from 3, so we can all actually see who's on the waiver wire. Also, the DFA period has been upped to 21 days. I'm also if a player sits and rots on your DFA list, and you forget to move him, I will put him in your AAA organization, through whatever shoe-horning I have to do, within reason (i.e. I will not place your 4 1/2 star starter on waivers to facilitate the move of a one-star 36-year old 2B). The league rules have been updated to reflect these changes.

Now for god's sake, SOMEONE stop Miami. They're 19 and f**king 6!

Huh. What player was that? Chances are I don't even want him.

But thanks.

Pred (folks): When the next patch comes, should we all be verify we are all updated before the next export. I.e. some coordination to make sure we are all patched so no problems occur. (or does it not really matter?)

I've tried to be patient and waiting for a larger sample size before I make any major roster moves, but I think I'm pretty tired of Pieorgies' anemic hitting. My best hitter is hitting .280/.395/.490 and overall I lack power, speed and we don't walk a whole lot. Pitching isn't a whole lot better. I've been kind of ignoring my minor league teams but I'm hoping they'll have some players coming up soon.

Expect to see some roster moves and perhaps some free agent signings this week by the Fightin' Pierogies!

Patch came today.

Will update when Prederick tells us to.
