GWJ OOTP League Thread

I loaded up the game but myself/Pittsburgh is not a select-able option.
Frustrating.

Hey Pred, I sent you an email about getting the file.

It took a little bit but I'm all sorted out. Prederick's directions are good and you really need to follow them in sequence.

When I downloaded the GWJLeague.lg folder it actually didn't have 'settings' directory within it and it's important you create your own 'settings' directory and drop that 'accountsdata_gms.dat' file in it BEFORE you boot up the game. That was what was causing me problem. I play OOTP on a mac if it matters.

Hopefully all of you guys have better luck than I did. Better late than never.

Alright, it's May 1.

I am open to letting people in the league, literally, whenever, but I am going to put down a hard deadline. If you want in on the league, you need to have let me know/downloaded the league file/Uploaded a team file by MIDNIGHT, THURSDAY.

If you aren't in by then, you can absolutely still get in, but we will be STARTING the season by Friday, at the latest.

New file! First one of the year!

As we're still fitting people in and getting settled, I've only done one week. Also, per my in-game list, I have NINE human GMs, but only FIVE people Exported a team file to the FTP. So get on that.

I'm gonna say this now, just so no-one is surprised. If you haven't downloaded the League File and Exported a team file to the FTP by the time we get to the first day of the season (and you're not in communication with me with a reason as to why), I'm deleting you as a manager until we get you sorted out. Deal?

Also, for those of you who might be new, we're early days, so the next sim (a week of time, in-game) won't be until probably Sunday. But, we keep to a pretty good schedule once the season starts, with sims occurring on Sunday-Monday-Wednesday-Friday. So please, keep track. If you have any issues, or need to take a vacation, let me know, I'll happily help out.

That said, I am going to be FAR more cutthroat about removing inactive managers this year. I will take the time to contact you first, but if it's August in-game, and you haven't uploaded a new team file since April, you're gonna be facing the axe. This goes double for when the season ends, as an idle team in the offseason won't make any moves, and end up throwing off the league's competition levels completely.

Understood sir, I will try what you suggested when I get home later tonight and will let you know if it works.

for clarification for other noobs like me, we "export team file" but we "download league file" not "download team file" correct?

also i made changes (team colors etc) and exported my file the other day but everything went back when i downloaded the team file. Was that just a timing issue or did i do something incorrectly?

Firstly: Exactly.

Secondly: Any color changes, team name changes, et cetera have to be handled by the Commissioner. So let me know what changes you (or anyone else!) has.

New file!

Hey, again, I got only 4 uploads this time. I'm okay with some downtime during the season (no-one absolutely needs to make changes week to week, I imagine), but for right now, I just need everyone who is in to make sure they're capable of logging into the league, setting up their team and uploading a league file.

So I've gotten files from Boston, El Paso, Pittsburgh, San Diego and Tulsa. I'm missing Austin, Indianapolis and San Antonio.

I'll take another look at my file, I thought I had everything sorted.

Sorry Prederick, I got busy and didn't have time to do much with OOTP last week. I finally logged in and uploaded a file last night. I should be able to keep up now, thanks.

Whoa, this league isn't messing around from the start:

HA!

New file! I think we're all just about in and working, correct?

i think we're all good.

only thing left is, where do we talk trash, i mean, about trades and stuff?

We generally do our trash talk here, in between Prederick's posts of 'New dingerling-ding-dong new file.' Although my team has been sucking for while now so I really don't have much trash to spew.

Trade talks are generally done via PM here. The owners talk between themselves and when an agreement is reached, both of the owners need to PM Prederick and let him know. And the trade will be reflected in the next sim.

Pred, can you update the team/GM list so we know who's in charge of which team? Thanks.

Done!

So, as far as trades go though, Novocain is 100% correct about how player-to-player trades are generally handled. If you want to make a trade with the AI, you need to alert me however, about what players you want to shop around or who you'd like to trade for specifically. It's a big of a rigmarole on my end, but it works.

To that end, however, as of right now I am leaving the AI Trade Difficulty on "Average". During our last league, I'd bumped it up to "Hard", which, those of you who've been with us for a bit surely noticed, causes the AI to ask for a goddamn dowry for any capable player.

Now, I'm not sure how much the trade AI has improved in OOTP 17, so this change is, for the moment, probationary. If I see people negotiating deals with the AI that'd make Swiper blush, I may personally veto them or bump the trade AI up to Hard.

We have also brought back player ratings, and along with that, scouts. But, as I'm sure most of you have noticed, the game's coaching system has returned as well. So now you have a Manager, a Bench Coach, a Pitching Coach, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera to think about.

Alright, so, when the season starts, the game will automatically update the League Totals/Strategies/Creation Modifiers/etc to match 1988. Now, we have two options here.

1.) Keep the league at 1988 indefinitely until we decide to move on.
2.) Play through baseball history from 1988 to the present day.

I gotta admit, as distasteful as I might've found the steroid era, I lean a little bit towards the latter, but I'm interested in everyone else's opinion.

Oh, also, new file!

GWJBL History, Part 1:

So, at the beginning of each season I like to sit down and try to bang out a big Season Preview because that's fun and I want to keep all of you engaged.

Now, I'll be doing that again, but this time around, we've got literally nearly 100 years of realistic baseball history behind us to sort through. It's a lot.

So, to that end, as we approach opening day, and throughout the season, I'm going to post a tidbit or two I find interesting. For instance...

- There have been 6 3-peats in league history. Oklahoma City and San Diego have both done it twice, but it hasn't happened since 1970.

- Between 1959 and 1969, Jacksonville (now Pittsburgh) appeared in the Championship Series 9 times. The only won it twice.

- Josh Harper set the record for longest hitting streak in 1925 while playing for San Diego. He managed to hit safely in 51 straight games, 12 ahead of the next closest player.

- Fort Worth's Terry Kaiser threw the league's last perfect game in 1976.

- Three players all are tied for the single game strikeout record, at 17 K's.

- 99 players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, but only 4 players as Shortstops.

- Between 1953 and 1959, Hall of Fame SP Willis Gonzalez won 5 Pitcher of the Year Awards.

- Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have both retired 9 players numbers each, tied for the most in league history.

- Nelson Gonzalez is regarded as the greatest manager in league history, managing 4 teams between 1928 and 1959, winning a total of 6 championships with 3 teams.

Feel free to add your own, I know there's a lot I'm missing.

I'd say #2.

Yeah, I'd be fine with #2 as well.

#2 sounds good to me also.

I like #2 as well.

Okay, so, new file!

So, I've taken us past the end of Spring Training to just a few days before the beginning of the regular season. In an IDEAL world, we will star the regular season FOR REAL on Sunday, 5/29.

Now, in order for that to happen, I need a few things from you people. Namely, roster cuts.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO CUT THEIR ROSTERS DOWN TO 25 BY WEDNESDAY. WEDNESDAY.

And if you don't do it, I'll do it for you. I need this for several reasons, including allowing us to seamlessly start the season and allowing me to put together an accurate preseason predictions article. So pretty, pretty please, cut your roster to 25 men by Wednesday.

done

I find this particular roster culling to be very difficult. I think it has most to do with the fact that I'm just not that familiar with the players on my team and their history, and god knows you can't just rely on spring training stats alone.

I suppose had I been slowly sending players down through out spring training this final cut would've been easier. Unfortunately my current roster has 60 players on it and 35 won't make the opening day roster.

I'll listen to suggestions if anyone has any to offer.

i figured out generally how many i wanted of each position group (SP, RP, catchers, infield, outfield)

looking at each of those groups i used a combo of the scouting ratings and popularity to trim the list down (cut 20 infielders down to 10 etc). then say for infielders i took the best at each position, and then looked who'd make the most versatile/best utility player and picked the best two. i used the prev 3 year and spring training stats to figure out to cut the last guy or two in each group.

seemed like the easiest way to cut 60% of my roster without getting too lost in the weeds to start

Thanks for the advice and it was a helpful strategy to get my roster in shape.
I'm down to 25. Pittsburgh is good to go.

Wednesday night, right?

Indy should be ready

Tulsa is all set.

San Diego should be done! I had a little trouble when I realized that for some reason my league was never advancing, even though it said it had imported the league file. I had just checked the date and noticed it was still in March. However, I just re-downloaded the league file, made my changes, and exported the team file. It said it worked, so hopefully it took.

El Paso is ready.

Bless you people, you heeded my demands.

Alright, new file!

The season will start on Sunday. Ordinarily, I'd celebrate with a big live-sim event, but I'm having hellacious issues with it, so hopefully I'll get that sorted out in time.

At the very least though, I'll spend the next few days crafting the GWJBL season preview, so that should be fun!
