GWJ OOTP League Thread

Yeah, '94 or '95 settings might be really interesting (And I am equally down on the peak steroid years).

Other interesting years:

- Basically any time in the 80's.

- 1961

- 1955

Edit: It also might be interesting to start the game in 1900 (or whatever) and let game handle updating player creation modifiers and such to match up with history. It's been a long time since I've done something like that with OOTP, and even then I believe I did so in an attempt to recreate the actual history of the game, but I don't see any reason it wouldn't work with a wholly fictional league.

We can also do this! Create a long, interesting history for the league leading up to whenever we choose to start the game. I'm actually very amenable to this idea, I think it'll help with immersion.

Stating in 1900 is fun, but I honestly think it would be too foreign in a mp setting. A lot of us remember the 90's though, I'm sure.

Hmm, let's see:

Average team with average history with less than average prospects

The Wild Unknown

Let's do this, boss!

I'm not sure how it would be too foreign? I mean at the end of the day it's still just a numbers game, isn't it? It'd just be different numbers for stats/ratings than we'd be used to.

However, I'd be just as fine starting in the familiar territory of the 90s as well. I just like the idea that we're starting from scratch, so I'd be up for whatever.

The rest of the rules you laid out work for me for the most part, Pred. The one rule I'm a little iffy on is the salary cap. I'd like to mirror the MLB, but I'd also not like to see one team get on a run that allows them to keep outbidding other teams for players simply because they have the bigger budget. That might just be from personal experience of running Portland and simply not being able to keep/afford free agents. It is also entirely possible that I was just a horrible manager and could have made it work which makes me wary of suggesting a cap in the first place. While I want the league to be as authentic to the real thing, I also don't want to see owners get discouraged because they simply don't have the payroll.

I vote for '88, I think that is when the trends that led into the 90s era we all remember so fondly really started to manifest. The mid-20s might be fun to for all the offense.

No steroid-era please.

I like the idea of a long history pre-generated before we start. Would be cool to select the award names too based on that history.

As for salary cap, I think the other revenue-based stuff may mean it is not needed, however I guess we can see after a couple of seasons.

So the playoffs will be a one tier World Series and that's it?

The rest of the rules look fine I think.

Someday this forum will fix this bug. Or move the damn edit button away from the damn quote button.

Someday.

I would agree with 1988

just got the game and still figuring it out, still have room in the league?

Sure! Looks like we're starting anew, so there is literally NOTHING but space at the moment.

I wasn't considering going as far back as the first half of the century, personally. Call me crazy, but 1907 baseball just doesn't appeal to me quite THAT much.

So, I'm hearing support for '88 and '94. Anybody feel particularly strongly either way, or shall I just make an executive decision? Given the choice, I might lean 1988, just because pitchers could still pitch 200+ innings back then without exploding.

Also, I can set the financial settings apart from the gameplay/simulation settings, so the game will churn out 1988 stats, but for ease, we can use modern-day contracts and financials.

Well, the game has ways of attacking this. First off is the way teams are doing it in real life. Accept sucking for 3-5 years, build up talent through drafts, then get good. Second is the salary cap. Third would be having a Set Percentage of Income shared between all teams (the default is 20%). And lastly, there's the Luxury Tax option.

So Pred are you going to run the league for some amount of time to generate history? Or are we starting cold? I'm fine either way, there's pros and cons whichever way you go. I thought that was where the 1900 idea came in. I don't think anyone here wants to play in the dead ball era.

Ah, that! Yes, I'm going to run the league for a certain amount of time. I have a small concern about file size, but I don't think it'll be an issue with the way online leagues work (at least I hope not), but we'll see when we get there.

Really, the question is do I sim from 1900 or, say, post-war (1946) only?

Okay, so I'm taking charge here and starting the historical sim tonight. I am also starting from 1900! For sh*ts and giggles.

And I will be simming from then until the 1988 season, when we will get started.

For the purposes of the sim and ONLY the sim, there is no salary cap, because I'd have to go in and adjust it every damn year. But for the purposes of our game, the Salary Cap will be only be enacted once we begin play, at 125% of the average payroll.

Yeah, that's basically what I figured--build up through the draft. So a little more strategic for owners of the smaller clubs. And making sure you protect those young players from the Rule 5 Draft (which I may have forgot to do a couple of seasons )

I'm interested in coming back and taking a team in the new league if you still have some slots? One thing I'd suggest based on other leagues I've played in the past: base the size of the league on the number of human players. AI players can become a scourge and it is better in the long run to keep the league small than have too many AI teams. You can always expand if you get more people interested in taking a team. Either way, I'm still in if you have a spot.

I checked the forums and the other OOTP thread is dead. Is it Ok to post general questions and comments here, or should I revive the old thread?

I'd say it matters on the number of questions. A few? Post em' here. A bunch? There.

The league is currently 16 teams jakeleg, which should work for us.

The sim is almost done! Hopefully, i'll have big news tomorrow!

Alright, the sim is done, but I'm having some major back-end issues that basically are preventing me from having ya'll be able to upload the damn file. I'm working on it, hopfully the powers-that-be have a fix for me.

ALLLLRIGHT.

So, I'm still having issues with the reports, but the league file itself SHOULD be ready to download! So, if you're in for the new league, drop me a line at Prederick at gmail dot com and I'll send you the file so you can download it.

FANTASTIC. I'M A MORON.

Okay, so here's what I realized. I wanted to send everyone the new league file, but since none of you have selected, y'know, a TEAM, all of you would get stuck at the login screen. So, I need a in-between choice, that allows you all to do some basic perusal of the league.

So, there's the current league standings. Everybody choose a team, first-come first served.

Once you have CHOSEN a team, I can add you into the game as a GM and get you started correctly.

EDIT: Also, if you'd like to rename/move your team, lemme know.

i'll take boston

I will take OKC, if still available.

And I will move them to Tulsa, please!

I'll take San Diego

I'll take El Paso please.

I'll take Austin please if they are available. I'd also like to rename them the "Troubadours"

I enjoy a challenge. I'll take that Jacksonville team.
I'd like to bring the team back to Pittsburgh as the Fighting Pierogies.

I will take INDY

I anticipate that El Paso will finish second to last in our first season, ahead of San Diego of course.

Alright, so that's 7 people in here, and I only count 5 emails in my inbox from people. So those of you who have NOT received emails from me need to email me at Prederick at gmail dot com so I can send you the league file link and the updated gms file.

OH! Also, those of you who have gotten league files, once you're all signed in you'll notice that the in-game date is now the first day of Spring Training. That's because we are effectively STARTING our new season on the first day of the regular season. This is just to give you all a chance to get familiar with your teams, your prospects, the league, et cetera. Once we're all set, we will move DIRECTLY to opening day.

Alright, I've got uploaded files from El Paso, San Diego and Tulsa. By my count, I have added SEVEN managers to the game already.

TEAMS TAKEN: New York, San Diego, Tulsa, Boston, El Paso, Pittsburgh, Austin.

So I need exports from Boston, Pittsburgh and Austin (New York is me, the commissioner). Please do so.

IF YOU WANT IN TO THE LEAGUE, YOU MUST EMAIL ME AT Prederick at gmail dot com AND LET ME KNOW WHICH TEAM YOU WANT TO TAKE OVER.

With any luck, opening day will be this week.

Also, for those of you who are in the league, take a look at the League History! You've got some 80 years of it to sort through now!
