Nintendo News and Nintendo Direct Catch-All

I think I read that the SNES controllers are not compatible with the Wii remote. The connector is different. The NES controllers had a Classic Controller Pro fitting. Minor detail, but no hooking them up to a Wiimote for Virtual Console on Wii U then.

Y'know, I was wondering why we weren't getting Super Street Fighter II. That seems like a really weird decision.

That Japan lacks Mother 2/EarthBound is interesting. You'd think it would be the opposite given the series' history. Quite frankly, this and the release of Star Fox 2 on this damn thing have me wondering once again if a Mother 3 localization may be a possibility after all.

God dammit.

Meh. I'll just wait and buy these games on the Switch VC.

I'm kinda with you. I wish we had a better picture of how the VC is going to work on Switch and how many of these titles will be available on the service. If I'm going to throw money somewhere to get official ROMs I'll go with the Switch because portability and that's one less set of HDMI cables I need to juggle even if I end up paying more for it.

I don't know how much delaying the paid networking stuff is related to the SNES Mini, but from a business standpoint it makes a ton of sense to delay any sort of VC talk until after the holiday season.

How long are the controller cords?

Good question!

5 feet (vs the NES Classic's 3 foot cords)

Let's all be thankful we didn't end up with Super Soccer as one of our games. I actually still own that game and enjoyed it back in the day, but I would much rather have just about anything else.

They should have thrown in Mega Man Soccer.

Hyper Fighting > Vanilla SSF2.

This is true. I was there!

That's a really nice list of games.

Kinda wish it had Zombies Ate My Neighbors, one of my all-time faves of the generation. But I understand licencing / IP rights are complicated.

Also wish it had the Super Star Wars games too.

Thanks Disney!

Super Famicom mini is out 10/05. Japan gets:

Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem
The Legend of Mystical Ninja
Panel de Pon
Super Soccer
Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers

Instead of

Earthbound
Kirby's Dream Course
Street Fighter 2' Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Castlevania 4
Super Punch-Out!!

My wife wants a Japanese one because of the game I bolded. It was released here as Tetris Attack and I do believe it's her favorite game ever.

We've got 2 of the cartridges sitting in the other room, but my old SNES has gone flaky on us. Does anyone have any experience with those retro consoles with all the cartridge slots? I have a ton of old NES, SNES, and Genesis carts in the basement to use with them, along with the old controllers...

I was chatting to the guy in my local friendly independent game store about them, and he had fairly good things to say about them. They've gotten less crummy over multiple revisions, and the quality of emulation is pretty good now.

Just caught this.

I guess I shouldn't hold my breath for a future Advance Wars.

"Personally, I'd love to do Advance Wars, but since it's harder to create relationships between its characters compared to Fire Emblem, I don't have a clear idea of what kind of setting it could have," Yamagami told Eurogamer.

Can someone email Yamagami and tell him 'who gives a f*ck? Just make sure your big innovation isn't a larger tank.' He can still make a bigger land vehicle, just don't use tracks
Who the hell plays Advance Wars for story (I did like Days of Ruin)? Or strategy, for that matter (later levels just end up becoming puzzles rather than battles to me - am I alone in this?)
I mean, we got drones, kill sats, icbms, hovercraft, mecha, tripods, jetpack infantry, just take your pick man.

Don't forget, there is a medieval take on the Advance Wars formula in the upcoming Switch game Wargroove. I'm quite excited for it:

Is it weird that I think Advance Wars is cool and Fire Emblem is dumb? It's not AW units really have that much range, almost all of them require you to be next to the target.

A little weird.

I do think that Advance Wars has been ignored for so long that at this point it's officially underrated by even Nintendo.

It comes with a campaign editor. Ooooooh.

I know!
I try hard to forget.
(Actually I did until you reminded me. I searched for it yesterday but forgot the name.)
Because otherwise the aesthetics vs gameplay makes the game a 50/50 buy decision for me.
Still, there is a variety of mythological units.
I'm more looking forward to Tiny Metal
Keep scrolling, there is a prototype.

The race to get on the Switch is apparently on!

The game I'd like to see on the mini SNES is UN Squadron.
A marvelous shmup (one of my top 5). It sucks they didn't represent shmups at all in that list.

Wut.

I presume he means the side scrolling or top down vertical scrolling shooters and not a rail shooter since people usually mean the latter when they say shmup.

UN Squadron would be welcome, as would Zombies ate my Neighbors, as mentioned earlier.

How about some Bubsy?

I was concerned that I was going to miss out on the MiniSNES this time. They announced preorders at my local EBgames in an email first thing yesterday, but I didn't get the email read until 5pm that night. I'd been out as a parent helper at an excursion to our local Science Centre with my daughter, for school.

I walked into the store today, hopingg that there would still be some local store allocation in the manager's inventory as the main online store was showing "sold out".

I got order number 73 of his 80 allocated units... WoooHoooooooo!

Looks like my MiniNES is getting a visit from their younger sibling

I would buy a MiniSNES that was loaded with 'just' Side scrolling SHMUPS.

UN Squadron...
Phalanx...
Parodius...

It was a golden age.

They usually mean rail shooters like Star Fox? I've only heard it for Gradius type games.

He meant to say 'former', not 'latter'.
Former = First.
Latter = later.

If mini snes also has save states it could make Super Ghosts n Goblins doable!
Rewinding would probably be even better. Saw that on the Disney Afternoon Collection, it's awesome.

Managed to get a pre-order in before they all disappeared. Fingers crossed it all goes through okay, and it can take its rightful place next to my NES Classic.

I have to confess that at the time I had a Megadrive, but spent many a happy day playing on a mate's SNES!

This is a shame. Didn't get the mini nes but did get a controller for the boy so he could play Mario 3 and Kirby on the Wii with it.

Not sure about this one, it would purely be for the novelty or a gift. I'm happy with curating my own SNES collection on the 3ds.

Though... Am I right in thinking Nintendo haven't released any more SNES games on 3ds VC since December / January time with Castlevania Dracula X?

If so can we read anything into that? Planned SNES mini was in the works? Winding down 3ds VC with Switch VC on the way?

The controller ports on the front of the SNES Classic are fake. The Wii-style connectors are hidden behind them. However, it doesn't look the controllers are being sold individually this time.

But you're right about SNES games on the 3DS. There haven't been any new ones released this year. That may be because of the SNES Classic; it could also just be part of sunsetting that platform. This is pretty much the last year Nintendo will be releasing 3DS games, after all.

Yup, wrote the wrong thing. Don't think most people think of Star Fox or Sin and Punishment, they think bullet hell like R-Type, Raiden, etc.
