GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

The Vent server has been a bit flaky for the past week or so. Lots of lag with silence followed by entire conversations overlapping. Any idea what might be up?

Hey all, new user here- loving the site and the podcasts. I've got vent setup- I'm hoping to join in on Sins of a Solar Empire gaming this weekend. Is there a pwd on that channel? What else do I need to know about how the Sins-folk meet up? (You can PM me to keep this thread on track wastin' griefers) I'm still perusing threads so maybe I will hit more info. Thanks.

Hey Walt, Is that link to the GWJ Clan Pay Website still good? I went there and it didn't say anything about GWJ, just some random client #. I just want to make sure we're not giving to some clan called "Your Mom Just Left" or anything.

I don't think there's a password on the channel, just the server.

Some channels have passwords and some do not; a passworded channel is the only defense against griefers.

If there isn't a channel for Sins..., just pick one with no password. No one is picky about that.

Yeah, that ClanPay address is still valid. And thanks for your donation! We're good through Feb. 2009 currently, but as always, donations for future billing cycles are never refused

Ranalin requested the password for the Sins channel, he'll surely hook you up.

This is no longer true with Ventrilo 3.0. You can read all of the anti-griefing measures built into Ventrilo 3.0, but the biggest thing is registered users. I've granted GWJ admin rights to a number of folks (basically, if you are an active GWJ board member, and you ask for it, I'll grant it). Those GWJ admin members can then pass the same rights to their friends, and so on and so on. That way, anyone associated with GWJ will eventually be registered, and pub-tards can no longer bother us. I haven't really even heard of any griefing issues since 3.0 rolled out, but if it's happening, please let me know. There are plenty of tools available now to prevent it.

Is this still going on? I can look into it.

Thanks

How's the kitty for 2009 looking, Walt? Time to kick in again?

Vent Normalization makes everyone's voice the exact same volume. In essence, you won't blow your ears out or have difficulty hearing people.

Here's how:
Go to Setup
Enable Direct Sound
Select the SFX Button
Select Compressor and click Add.
Under Compressor Properties use the following settings
Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (Try 15)
Attack = 0.01
Release = Around 500
Threshold = Around -30
Ratio = 100
Pre delay = 4.0

What the settings do:

Gain: How much volume you feed into the compressor. Not really relevant unless everyone is too quiet, then you can turn this up a little; turning it up too much will sound EXTREMELY bad.

Attack: How fast volume change will happen. Example: setting this to 500 means that anything coming in will only be dropped in volume after a half a second. For vent this should be set as low as possible.

Release: How fast the compressor stops changing things. Not really that relevant with vent, setting it around 500 is good for voice material.

Threshold: This sets the point where we actually start changing what’s coming in. Whereas 0 is the absolute loudest you can have for an input, -60 is super quiet. Average users will probably come in somewhere around -25 to -15, with the occasional few being really quiet, which is why I have this set so low.

Ratio: How much any sound below the set threshold gets compressed and/or modified in the volume department. If you still want to hear SOME volume variation then set this lower (2-4). The higher you set it the closer in volume everyone will be.

Pre delay: Mostly just deals with processing; with computer and digital processors they can look ahead a few milliseconds to see what needs to be dropped in volume or changed before it actually comes through the speakers. Highest is ideal.

So far this has made a world of difference for me.

We're looking really good. February is the next due date, and we just about have 2009 covered already...

Any chance of getting a PW put on the GWJ RPG room? We've had issues a couple of times with random people showing up and being annoying (Whom I doubt were GWj member)

TheWalt - should we upgrade our clients to the new version?

Yeah, new version works fine.

And it has Overlay support, which i never tried before (it may have been there before), but is pretty cool.

Is this a recommendation for every Goodjer? Because I will do it...

It's strictly a personal preference. It only affects your listening, not how anyone else hears anything.

How can I get into any of the WoW channels, they are all password enabled. Is there also a main channel or are these for various servers?

Thanks for the detailed instructions. I'm all set up, never having used Vent before.

I'd like to get registered, and find out the password for the LOTRO channel (assuming it's still used...)

Obriano, ask in guild chat.

I never tried Vent what is the big advantage over regular ingame speak?

Well, you don't have to be ingame to use it. That's a pretty nice advantage.

It has been brought to my attention that the Vent server is down. I checked out Darkstar's website, and they're working on getting it back up.

Update 3/30/2009 @ 8:00 PM CST
Good evening,

We hope your day has gone better than ours. We realize there are major problems at the moment with a handful of Ventrilo systems, as well as the obvious absence of our main website and systems. We are resolving them as quickly as we possibly can, and have all of our staff working overtime until that happens. We are still here. We are not going out of business. We did not all move to Sealand. If you require assistance, your best bet will be #DarkStarLLC on the gamesurge.net IRC network until our systems are restored. Please understand that our staff are extremely overwhelmed right now as a result of today's problems and may be very slow to respond - we are still here and we definitely care about getting your service restored.

Thank you for your patience.

Also, for those of you browsing the World of Warcraft forums, please recognize that zomghealz is indeed a staff member of ours. We're doing our best to get you guys back online ASAP!

I imagine they will get it resolved when they get it resolved, but you can check their website for updates http://www.darkstarllc.com

Cool, thanks Walt. Looks like it's still down as of now.

it is up but now there are no rooms and it is labeled darkstar vent

And it looks like all of the user accounts were reset so us admins can't login.

Yup, just tried and I can't login with my account either.

Ditto here this morning.

But Darkstar's site is wonky. Half the links aren't working, nor is access to forum.

Maybe they got hit by Conficker?

OH WALT SAVE US! I HAD TO LISTEN TO THOSE WEIRDOS PLAY GAMES!

Allright, I was out of town last weekend... duckilama, Pharacon, Farscry, Gaald, LeapingGnome, Malor, RichyRambo, trowan, and Trashidawa all should have admin access again. msg me if you forgot what the password was... sorry for the service interruption.

I cannot log in, and it seems to indicate that I cannot log on as a normal user (says that ti cannot authenticate)

Try setting up a new server following the directions in the original post. I just created a test account, and it worked fine...
