GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

Curse is another one.

I think Mumble is the most straightforward replacement for Ventrilo though. Discord is kind of like Slack for gamers, and Curse seems to be heavily about integration with specific games.

Mumble is modern Ventrilo. Similar concepts as Ventrilo, but actually in steady development, and open source to boot. And an actually usable chat overlay!

All that stuff in the top post about Vent Normalization, that comes right out of the box with Mumble.

Ventrilo doesn't seem to do anything besides sponsor QuakeCon every year:

I tried to bring people over to Mumble a few years back. It wasn't successful.

You were probably too nice. You have to be an obnoxious asshole about it.

I can be that asshole.

Yuuuuuuuup.

The problem with Curse (unless I've missed something) is that you can't just randomly join a channel; someone has to create a session and invite you to it. So unless you are coordinating in advance you can't just jump in.

For example, if I wanted to hop in the Elite channel in Ventrillo I just hop in. If some people are running a Curse session in Elite one of them would have to send me a link to the session or otherwise tell me about it. Harder to randomly connect.

With Rocket League, we solved that using a group. If someone is playing, they create a channel and post the URL to the group. Then anyone can click it and join. If they click the channel and nothing happens they can start a new one.

Discord seems to be a pretty solid alternative to Ventrilo, also supporting mobile clients which is handy if you're not near a computer.

tl;dr: Would someone please delete or disable my account on the Vent server?

Explanation:

When I logged in to add a post to the GOTY voting thread, I spotted a message from TheWalt, asking me, more or less, why I was griefing the WOW guild. That wasn't me; I assume it was some GWJ miscreant using my account as cover, knowing that I was gone. I sent him back a message, but he hasn't gotten back to me; perhaps mail notifications aren't working.

This was at the end of October, so TheWalt may have already disabled/deleted the account, but if he hasn't, would someone else mind doing it? I don't have Vent installed at the moment, and it might already be locked or password-changed, so it just seems smarter to ask someone here to do it.

Thanks!

Easier done than said!

Thank you very much, sir.

So, I have tried the Vent server a bunch of times. I have never seen anyone there. Is that a common experience?

Maybe lately. Certain games that everyone plays weekly (TF2, L4D2) have built-in voice chat, and other games (LoL, HotS) integrate so well with Curse, showing you who is playing what game and making it easy to join, people use that instead.

Would anyone be interested in a Discord chat group for GWJ? Maybe just a general chat that we can break into individual rooms for different games as needed? I used Discord during the silly Christmas Steam AR and its pretty awesome.

Timing is great. I just made one about 30 minutes ago. (got 5 people so far). We should consolidate.

Are people no longer interested in Ventrilo? Should we discontinue funding it?

I don't ever see anyone on vent.
Discord looks pretty cool...

Everybody I've seen playing LoL, HotS, and other stuff is using Curse now.

Not sure anyone is using Vent anymore

On the account status, during last years funding drive, Goodjers paid 2 years worth of Ventrilo service through Darkstar's Clanpay service. Of course, convenience comes at a cost, and Clanpay payments are non-refundable. So we're paid through February 2017 on the Ventrilo server, at which point we can shut it down in favor of other com software.

I'll update the original post to say as much, when I get around to it.

Looking at login data, here's what I have as unique logins per month for the past few:

July 2015 - 206
August - 318
September - 180
October - 149
November - 117
December - 100
January - 186

Original post updated. Sometimes tech just flat outdates itself.

We may want to disable clan pay (or remove the link) so we don't unnecessarily pay for the service if we are just going to let it run dry.

Would someone who plans to be around and would enjoy maintaining a Voice Chat thread like to make one? Some place like this one where the OP has and updates the best information on how to join and interact with the GWJ PC gaming community as a whole. It was nice when I was new to have this thread here while Vent was the jams. I would also suggest having Certis sticky the thread once it is all updated so it is easy for newly voice interested members to find it.

OP might be a coffee grinder, but there has been some recent discussion of voice software over here. I wouldn't mind maintaining a communication software thread, provided no one objects on conflict of interest grounds.

No one objects. Go forth my son.

I would not have a problem but think you should make a new thread where you are the OP so the OP will always be uptodate . I have my dates that the thread linked will be updated in the OP by a grinder.

Just my opinion but I would make a new one with a clear and concise title and ask to have it stickied.

And lo, it was done.

And so the torch was passed.

(and I took the info on how to ClanPay out of the original post, although there's not a way to officially shut it down through Darkstar's servers)

TheWalt, thank you for the years of service.

(Someone should get the man a gold watch or some such...)
