GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

I'll start documenting when it happens. It's not that the server is down...it's that the route to it is highly unreliable. 90% of the people will be constantly getting dropped while one or two remain connected.

Okay that does suck. Documentation is the best way to start a remedy. Thanks!

That is generally what I experienced as well so you are not the only one.

This is fantastic! I feel a little grubby for not having donated, at this time.

Is there a protocol of sorts? For example, I would assume (hopefully correctly) that 'Single Player Coffee Shop' is channel for those who are playing through a campaign mode/story mode in one game or another and wish to converse sporadically while doing so.

Gamer A: "I just put a cannibal to the sword, in The Witcher!"
Gamer B: "Great! I'm still on that same level of Orcs Must Die! trying to five star it."
Gamer A: "Man, that was two hours ago."
Gamer B: "Oh! So that's why the wife is giving me evils. I told her one more go, just 15 more minutes." *face palm*
Gamer A: "She'll forgive you in the morning! Let's go on Left 4 Dead until then!"

What about multiplayer games that require more frequent chatter, yet do not have a dedicated channel? Is it okay to select an empty channel that is unlikely to see a sudden increase in popularity, such as 'Boardgames' which has three sub-channels. Perhaps that is what they are for?

My name is RnRClown, on Ventrilo, by the way. I do not know why I choose a different tag for this fine forum as my PSN, Steam, and Ventrilo all match up. I just felt like a change, and chaotic good used to be my favorite alignment choice in Baldur's Gate, while clown has always been an online handle since I was part of a Def Leppard forum back in the day. Mashed them together and got this!

Everything you mentioned sounds right on.

Yeah, just grab something that looks likely. If you think you'll be playing that game very much, you can ask for a channel to be made, and someone will get to it reasonably quickly.

The place is never so packed that you can't use an empty room for whatever strikes your fancy. I'd say just avoid using any channels that are labeled as commentary, filming, recording, or anything like that. In case someone is recording a playthrough or spectating a match with commentary. Not a common occurance, but that's all I got.

I reinstalled my system and don't seem to remember my Vent account password. Can someone reset it for me? Thanks!

Help!

Sheeit, I don't work on weekends!

Mondays are kinda sketchy, too.

Let me just get the kids down.

Done!

Ouch, I didn't check the thread until now. Sorry, Mantis!

No worries, I just tweaked my ventrilo2.ini file so I could connect as a basic user for a quick fix.

Oh, I gave Fed some private love for getting me fixed up, but let me give him some public love here. Might be frowned upon in Tejas, so good thing I'm in CO now.

You may all go to hell smoke a bowl, and I will go to Texas.

Bah, something happened and I lost my admin status.

But you still have your password, right?

Your admin status is easily restored by other admins. I can do it tonight, or someone else can if they have access to Vent during the day.

Yeah, I'm logged in with the password you set. I'm just not getting logged in as an admin. I don't remember having to "elevate" with the server admin login step before and can't find a PM with the server password in my history either.

[Edit] Nevermind! Looks like Darkstar finally fixed my control panel login. I was able to fix myself up, which means I could have reset my password to I guess. It must've been TheWalt's ticket that got it cleared up as I haven't been able to login to their control panel for a couple of years.

good deal LM!

Hey all. I'm trying to set up vent on my Mac. I've got all my server settings right, and the password (to my knowledge) but it's telling me the server can't validate me or I have the wrong port number?

Anyone that wants to troubleshoot and has done this on a Mac Tweet me.

I don't know what to do there, other than to say make sure you double check the port settings. If you need a password reset, post again.

Wht would a password reset do? There's only the one password, right?

Right.

Have you tried making a throw-away account just to see if you can get connected?

Can we get a channel for Marvel Heroes please?

Maybe one team channel in there? I dunno, one they get xp glitches fixed I assume we'll team a little more.

can i get a password reset for my username please?

I think we need a Trading Card Game catch all channel in vent. Maybe call it TCG catch all.

Nevermind.

Done.

Heyo! I sent a PM to TheWalt but haven't gotten a response yet, so I figured I'd share the question here just in case anyone else knew the answer.

We on the Extra-Life team are hoping to use the Vent server, but we'd like a room specific to Extra-Life. I'm not sure how Vent works for the most part, so I don't know if this requires permissions or if there's a room limit or what. The question was also raised about inviting non-GWJers in for the duration, but seeing as there's a 50-person cap on the server I'd imagine that might be a limitation.

Naturally, we'd like any GWJers following the streams to come on in and chat with us.

So all you want is a room? No problem.

And for future reference, asking questions here is almost always faster, as there are a whole bunch of us with Channel Admin abilities.
