Olympics (not p&c)

Anybody just want to talk about the games?

Hockey and curling are the most enjoyable for me to watch.

Feel free to still complain about NBC coverage as I'm sure it will suck again.

I think there needs to be more coverage. 5 channels of Olympics is not enough.

Oh also forgot obligatory: USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!

Bob Costas with pink eye is kinda funny with all the 'don't use the water' stuff.

So, how about that opening?

Is it just me, or is NBC's Olympic website useless if you don't actually catch the events live?

I can't find or get to work any full replays of events, even when the video description says that is a full replay.

Reading comments from you guys across the pond regarding how backwards and unmodern the viewing experience is for the Olympics makes me so glad I don't have to put up with the sh*t.

I mean, we don't have the wall to wall coverage we had for the Olympics in 2012 but we still get to watch it live or use catch up. Not having to rely on the whim of the tv company.

Yes I remember hearing about the BBC doing a channel for each sport or something like that for '12. Pretty awesome.

Over here despite NBC having NBC, MSNBC, NBC Sports, CNBC, and the USA Network all available to show sports, they still choose to not air many popular events live and then try to squeeze the replay into their 8-11pm slot on NBC for primetime advertising.

You do seem to be able to watch most events live on their website. Or at least I have been as a Comcast customer. Not sure if they let all people do that or if you have to login with your cable account or what? But like badferret said, I didn't see replays so far.

We won a medal on the snow for the first time ever. We don't even have proper mountains.

Here in Canada we have coverage on CBC, TSN and the 5 sportsnet channels this year. I can also watch NBC if I feel like it. American coverage isn't too bad when they actually cover something properly. They have good announcers and understand how to show sports. The problem is, they only show sports with a strong American gold medal hope. The bigger problem is, they'll often show *only* the American in the hunt and if they don't do well, immediately stop showing the sport in favor of something else without even showing the result! Compare this to CBC that will schedule event coverage and then show the complete event from start to finish with commentary. The Canadian announcers are homers for sure, but they're usually one regular network announcer combined with a former olympian in the sport for color. They stay right to the bitter end and give insight on the other countries competing as well.

Gold Zone channel seems to be the best way to view live events, by far. Its hosted by the same guy that hosts Red Zone channel for the NFL.

Gold Zone? That's genius. How in the hell do I get that?

Edit: "authenticated subscribers" Dammit.

I'm using my brothers directv credentials. After spending yesterday trying to watch taped events and college hoops (while the espn ticker ruined the surprise), Gold Zone is great.

Edit: forgot to mention that I'm watching online.

Wait, DirecTV's Red Zone, not the cable one? The real one?

Are you telling me Andrew Siciliano is doing a "Red Zone" channel for the Olympics?

Yup, that guy

Ooh, USA-Canada women's hockey on live this morning.

Yes! Power play goal by USA!

Well that was a terrible call. 2-1 Canada now.

Whistle clearly blew before the puck was in. It's one of those rules like the NFL has, where once the whistle is blown the play is dead, and it's not supposed to be reviewed. Still unsure how they gave them the goal.

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed by the reffing overall in that game. Good thing it was essentially meaningless - we'll see you again for the gold medal game.

Yup, that guy :)

That's gotta be awesome.

CBC coverage from Canada is a million times better than USA-centric/sob story NBC. CBC focuses on the sport and gives great analysis of the champ, Canadian or not.

Nobody goes down a icey slope head first better than British women.

This just in. TJ Oshie is good.

That was a fun shootout. I'm not sure what I think of International rules allowing you to repeat shooters, but Oshie's 4 for 6 shooting was pretty crazy.

That Russia v. USA game was quite the nailbiter. Thought Kane was going to put us ahead on that breakout pass from Pavelski.

Oshie's show was impressive but I'm not a fan of repeat shooters in the shootout. I believe the first 3 shooters must be different but repeat shooters can be used for every subsequent round. It's a team game and I'd like to see the team perform in the shootout. Would have been interesting to see if Kane could do in the shootout what he couldn't on that breakaway.

Had to go to work at 10. Listened to OT on the radio. Missed shoot out. Need to get home for highlights.

Patrick Kane is 1/11 this year in the shootout. Oshie is 7/10.

I agree that the shootout should not feature repeated players, but Oshie was brought on to the team with that rule in mind, and he won them the game. And I'd rather watch Oshie go 4/6 than Kane go 0/1 or 1/1.

So Russia went to a shoot out again this morning, but pulled out the win against Slovakia.

Is it me, or does the USA team seem too good? They are playing lights out, and after a tough win against Russia, instead of a major letdown, they came out guns blazing today to secure a bye into the quarterfinals.

Sportsmanship. +1

Aha. I know who won the ice dancing gold. Now if I spoil that result for my wife, will I get out of having to watch it on NBC prime time tonight with her?
