I forgot I had posted in this thread. Reading the first post, I formed almost the exact post above in my head, and scrolled down to write it, only to find it already there.
I want to love ARMA but I can't stand playing a shooter at 20 frames per second. And every new ARMA plays like that on my inevitably-midrange machine at the time. Only now can I actually play ARMA 2 well enough to stand it, and we're already moving on to 3.
I know how you feel; I upgraded my PC last year mainly to play Arma 2. Then they announced Arma 3...
At the same time, these devs actually keep working on their games years after they release, and I've found that Arma 2 is running better than ever before. Between that and the mod community and the fact that there are no other games on the market quite like the Arma series, I don't think it matters if you get into the game right away. By the time you build your next gaming PC, people will probably still be playing Arma 3 and you'll be able to run it. Heck, 10 years later, there's still a MP community that plays OFP -- these games have legs.
Having said all that, I am hoping they've learned some lessons from their previous games and will put out something at launch that isn't a buggy mess plagued by bad performance. I love Arma 2 in spite of its quirks, but I wouldn't mind if Arma 3 ran well right out of the box.
I only just recently started getting into ARMA2, so yeah... can't really get overly excited for ARMA3 yet.
I think tonight, I'm going to kick back and play some ARMA 1. I really like Sahrani as a battlefield.
Edit: Went ahead and did and made a video for it. I miss Sahrani.
Oh that's cool! I checked on a similar project from about a year ago, and while the port itself worked, the AI didn't know how to use roads (not that they are much better in native ARMA 2 maps, but I digress).
I'll have to check this out!
Is this the right place to put this? Because I'm having a gamegasm here. I need some help cleaning my desk up.
WWII ARMA mod.
New video showing off the newly announced island of Stratis:
This will probably bankrupt me if I try to make a system that can run it well within the next 5 years. Definitely not a sim for the poor and Irish.
Oh my, please take my money.
I see they've kept the annoying motion blur when you move the camera around, hopefully it's optional this time.

Whaddaya mean? It's option in ARMA2, I have it disabled. I forget how I did it, but it was the first video option I changed after resolution.

You've always been able to turn it off in Arma 2 by turning off post-processing
That's the thing, it's tied to another effect that's fairly unrelated, all or nothing.

There's a mod for Arma 2 that disables the blur but keeps the other post-processing effects. I think it's called okt_NoBlur.
I hope this game runs well on mortal computers.
Looks like they're really pushing to improve the visual side of things. Presumably most of this would add to the GPU load and not necessarily to the already-constraining CPU load.
Looks great! Not sure about the underwater stuff..Doesn't really interest me but that's just imo.

HaHa!

Oh, that was a good one! Bohemia Interactive making a game that runs well on medium-spec computers.

Wow, that's some surprisingly high CPU minimum requirements. Especially with the fairly low RAM and GPU requirements (given the videos we've seen).

Arma games have always been demanding on the CPU and less so on the GPU (due to the whole simulation aspect of the game).

Don't put any stock in those ArmA 3 requirements just yet. They are preliminary and are being revised for E3.
How preliminary are they? They're an *exact* copy-paste of ArmA2:OA's Recommended system requirements (see bottom of page), right down to the nonsensical "AMD Athlon Phenom".
So, I don't think any thought was really put into them.
This is my most anticipated game of the year. I can't wait to see the full E3 segments that are previewed in that video. And if I have to upgrade my computer to play this, so be it. I wish I could justify a TrackIR...

You're willing to upgrade your PC, but can't justify a $120 TrackIR setup? Odd call there.
TrackIR makes an absolutely massive difference in how Arma feels, you won't believe how much more immersive it is once you have the head tracking and can look around freely independent of movement.

Well, the computer upgrade talk was hyperbole. The computer I built last year was mainly so I could play Arma 2 at a decent frame rate and I'm hoping it'll work for Arma 3.
I can't find a TrackIR 5 in Canada for under ~$180 (with shipping). Maybe I need to look harder. I notice the TrackIR site actually shows Day-Z on the home page -- nice!
Wow, I can't believe how polished the game is looking already. The graphics, the lighting, the animations -- even the mission text -- it's all looking great so far.
CAN. NOT. WAIT.

Really looking forward to this game and creating huge scenarios again. Hopefully someone will be able to port all the Arma 2 maps across as well.
A couple of the official E3 showcase videos are up:

Night Ops:
The lighting in the night ops video is incredible.
Edit: Here's the short vehicle showcase:
Just came across this...

Yeah they were the guys responsible for the updated Chernarus for DayZ standalone. From what I've heard in the media they were on vacation and just taking pics, it didn't actually have anything to do with Arma 3 despite being set in the Greek Islands. The statement that was made by their lawyer was "...makes it clear that the men were there as tourists, they did not enter military areas and did not photograph military equipment, although may have inadvertently shot video of buildings close to the international airport. They were not attempting to gather photo references for the game Arma 3."
I hope it clears up soon, I can only imagine how rough this is for their families.
