Post a Political News Story

(formerly known as "Post a News Story, Argue with Me.")

There have been many times where I want to share a news story, but it's a bit too political for the "entertain me" thread, so here's a place for them.

I'll start: Jeopardy contestants don't know who Megyn Kelly is.

Think you nabbed the wrong link there, this one ?

From Sometimesdee's previous post on another thread.

She turned me into a newt she did.

*I* don't know who Megyn Kelly is... And I was better off before googling her.

Yeah, I was playing fast and loose with C&P on P&C.

Give credit where it's due; Hypatian posted that one.

We're doing Oklahoma news?

Satanists unveil proposed statue for OK state capitol

The group, which calls itself "The Satanic Temple," today unveiled its proposal for a monument it intends to erect next to another religious statue: a depiction of the Ten Commandments.

According to The Satanic Temple's application, the proposed monument features a large pentagram and “a 7-foot tall goat-headed Baphomet that sits cross-legged flanked by a child on both sides. The lap will serve as a seat for visitors.”

It would also include quotes from poets William Blake and Lord Byron.

The monument, said the group’s spokesman, was designed to reflect the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and could doubly serve as a tourist attraction.

“The statue will serve as a beacon calling for compassion and empathy among all living creatures,” said spokesman Lucian Greaves. “The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation.”

Oklahoma state legislators in 2009 approved the installation of a privately-funded Ten Commandments monument. It was installed last year over the protests of the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. The Satanic Temple wasn’t the only group to apply for a monument; People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and a Hindu group have also requested a place near the Capitol steps.

That's not even one of the Unforgivable Curses. This is the problem with zero-tolerance policies.

Me either. I've seen her during segments of The Daily Show, but never bothered to remember her name.

I'm sure there is a negative correlation between ability to answer Jeopardy! questions and likelihood of watching Fox News.

Perhaps I won't have any luck with the Jeopardy! Online test, then. I knew who she was because of Jon Stewart. However, I still don't know the name of "the brown-haired guy who is not Steve Doocy."

Wow, that is special. I can't believe they actually had to put it in writing. I can only imagine RomneyBot2012 trying to comprehend these orders...

Median net worth of Republican member of the House of Representatives: $834,250
Median net worth of American families: $77,300

They have to be reminded because there was no recession for them.

Am I the only one who doesn't see even a lick of empathy towards the unemployed in those statements?

Charge: Stopping unemployment benefits could stop people from looking for work.
Response: Well, extending them also stops people from looking for work.

Charge: Several studies have shown that that number would be VERY small.
Response: Well, when they ended the program in NC, the unemployment rate dropped by 1.5% in only 4 months!

...why that sudden drop? Because what was predicted in the first charge came... true? Did... did you just prove the previous charge with the response to a follow up charge?

And even then, you're basically saying, if we give you unemployment, you won't look for work... how is that empathy?

Seriously, does the Republican Party not see a problem in that it keeps having to have "talking points" on "how to talk to people" so that they don't hate them with more and more portions of the public?

They have to be reminded because there was no recession for them after they bailed out the bankers who funded their campaigns.

There, I fixed that for you.

Well, the artist's rendering of the monument shows that there's a comfy little lap on Satan that kids can crawl up on...

There is far less penis in that picture than I would have thought.

You're assuming those are legs under the blanket.

It's probably going to raise his stature in the primary, unless he does something crazy like apologizing. My guess is it'll be flushed down the memory hole between primary and general, if he wins the nomination.

Virtually identical to median net worth of Democrats in congress. ~2.3% difference.

But good effort. Nice spin.

Then were just down to discussing why Republicans are such cold-hearted bastards considering they don't want to vote to extend the unemployment benefits and fought tooth and nail to cut the food stamp program by billions last year.

I think his point is that income was not a factor in the Republican's "compassion" given that both parties are equaly wealthy.

Some college athletes play like adults, read like 5th-graders

The issue was highlighted at UNC two years ago with the exposure of a scandal where students, many of them athletes, were given grades for classes they didn't attend, and where they did nothing more than turn in a single paper.
University of Oklahoma professor Gerald Gurney found that about 10% of revenue-sport athletes there were reading below a fourth-grade level.

Given that the American average is only like 2-3 grades higher, I don't see why this is as big a deal as the fact that our average reading level is below high school. >.<

The average American isn't college-educated.
