SimCity 5 Catch-All - Offline mode coming in next update

One underlying assumption of mine is that we want to maximize the release-day GWJerage, which would mean we would kindly ask anyone unable to begin play on March 5--sorry non-US folks--to indicate so so they can opt out and we can get the next available release-day player? Would everyone favor this or just use the posted order, regardless of whether someone's assigned city-plot might be vacant for a few days as their country gets access in the days following?

Final important note: we know the game has text chat, but I don't know, and doubt, whether it supports voice. I outgrew text chat around 2000 or so and imagine most/all of you did, too. So please configure your PC to join the GWJ Ventrilo server. And for the sake of all, please make your Ventrilo username match your Origin and/or GWJ name.

For anyone who wanted to but can't make it into the first 16-player zone, I'm sure there'll be other good GWJervilles Jr.

I don't think it will make much of difference if people start on release day or not. I think this is more of casual thing, so we don't have to min-max out region from day one. This is assuming the servers hold up day one. I suggest we start with the first 16, then start a second region and people can fill in that one and if there are openings people can claim the open spots. I would join two regions. I'll use vent, but I don't know if this game requires voice chat. I like the idea of being able to chat with each other as we build but also respect that some people may want to build in peace.

I am not so much into voice chat unless needed for specific Organization. Just general chatter I prefer text chat.

I vote for Viridian Woods, it looks like it has a good mix of terrain for everyone's taste. Not really sure what type of city I want to do yet though, up for anything.

In other, other news, P4rgaming--certainly an interesting site--had a story on the SimCity in-game Store a few weeks ago, and I don't recall seeing it linked on this thread.

I've never heard of that site, but based on that article and some of the other headlines they're running I wouldn't doubt if they were an offshoot of The Onion.

I would like to be part of the GWJtropolis!

Is there anything that limits you to playing on just one region?

I don't know how much I will enjoy this game, but I imagine myself playing 3 or 4 cities of different types in different regions.

I believe you can play in like 10 different regions at a time, whether that be a multiplayer region or a region where you keep is private and play all the cities yourself.

One issue could be the saves are in the cloud. No reloading. There is a sandbox mode, where you can get unlimited money, all the building are unlocked from the beginning, you can toggle off random disasters, etc. Sandbox mode regions aren't connected to the leader boards or global markets though.

I remain " IN" and will claim my spot in the GWJtropolis. Vent also works for me for chat. Very, very excited about our new venture.

Someone should take my spot in the first region, I won't be able to play until sunday, at earliest. i'll join the uber casuals later:)

I would be in if you guys have an extra spot, I decided to preorder it and I do wish you could preload on Origin. I am looking forward to the game now.

I'm less than worried which region I get in initially and more concern about who is in the region with me. As long as the who is the upstanding denizens of GWJ, all is well.

If I get it - it's going to be a busy week for me - I'd love a region to play in with GWJers.

I preordered on Amazon, got an email today that they can't preload.

That's so silly. And it is a whopping 12 gb, so it will take a few hours to download at least.

I'm game for the Titan Ridge map. My Origin name is also LupusUmbrus.

I'll try to be up and playing on release day. Keeping my fingers crossed that their servers don't completely melt on the first day.

I'll be the one dragging everyone down. Still, when your citizens start to moan about the high taxes, just tell them that if they don't like it, they can move to davet's city.

At that point, they'll pay you whatever you like.

You can still catch me as MateoFalconeGWJ on Origin, and I'd like to jump in too.

ZaneRockfist , Lothar, & Robear, you have expressed interest in GWJertowning but I don't see an Origin ID in your post, footer, GWJ profile, nor on the GWJ ID Doc. (That didn't prevent me from sending Origin friend requests to "Lothars" and "RobearGWJ", though, if those are your accounts.)

Yea, I've been showing my wife some of the vids, and it looks like I'll probably get a second copy for simultaneous coop with her as well, as soon as we try my copy on her PC and see if her business NVidia can handle it (numbers suggest it won't). Strangely she studied architecture for many years but was never introduced for school or for fun to any version of SimCity.

Some of us have much slower Internet, so even more than that. That's one thing that annoys me about Origin: I don't think it [em]supports[/em] pre-loading.

As long as the Amazon box contains a disk and not just a sheet with a code on it, and as long as the day-1 patch isn't gigs and gigs, we should be fine.

Just sent a friend request to everyone in the region. Looking forward to playing with you guys on Tuesday.

Looking forward to playing with you, sir!!

I was chatting with EA support for an unrelated issue and I let the discussion wander to SimCity. You only need to read the bold text.

Ok, wonderful. So, would you mind answering a few questions about SimCity?

Yes. Please ask.

I have a retail box being shipped from Amazon. Will it include a DVD so I can load the game and play immediately or will it only include a code and I'll have to download the whole game through Origin?

Yes. Retail box will have a DVD. You can register the code on your account and play the game using DVD.

Great!

Most games have release-day patches. Are you guys expecting one for SimCity? If so, could you tell me roughly what size it is?

We can not confirm it right now. As we launch when players reports bug or glitch in the game,

NP

Some of my friends have preordered SimCity on Origin rather than waiting for the Amazon delivery. For them, could you tell me exactly when the servers for SimCity will go live?

I'm sorry we don't have exact time.

Ah, so we can't reliably predict that to be at midnight in whichever time zone you're in on Monday night, or something like that?

Yes.

Final question: Will customers who preorder on Origin be able to preload the game before the servers go live so that they can start playing when the servers go live instead of just then starting to download and not being able to play for a long time?

Yes. They will be able to pre load the game before the servers go live.

Ah, good! Well, thank you so much for the answers.

Oh, cool. Guess they do support pre-loading, then. Of course, I'll [em]still[/em] probably be playing Tomb Raider when it comes out, but it's nice that I'll be able to have SC5 downloading before then.

I used to love sim city but playing the old version years ago has completely burned me out. This was back in the 90's way before I had any Internet access. I spent months and months building and rebuilding city's trying to work out why my water system wasn't working. Laying and relaying pipes and building water tower after water tower.

Not so long ago I mentioned this to a friend and he goes, "Oh yeah that was a well known bug didn't you know". Months wasted.

So no thanks.

You got my correct username, Keit, just accepted it. Thanks!

Be careful posting just to poo poo on something everyone else is excited for. Sometimes its better just to avoid a thread for a game you don't intend to play.

Count me in for one of the GWJ tropolis. Origin name Copingsaw.

Cool region FTW!
