We got's some BIG piles this year! :)

Not to mention that this thread got a head start in 2012 and got bloated post-Steam Sale!

Making some good progress so far this year, spurred on by the GTASC competition running on True Achievements.

Pile is currently 5 games lighter already.

Finished Costume Quest.

I've decided to finish the Halo 4 campaign and dabble in the MP, but only because my sub expires Feb 2, and I don't plan on renewing it.

Once I've gone through that, I'll roll a few fortune cookies. Maybe I'll get something I can complete in a week.

Wow, I really did something stupid. I booted Civ V up again. Progress on the pile has ground to a halt. :p

I picked up a few things in the past few days.

I have Assassin's Creed 3 coming from a trade with another Goodjer.

We also decided to buy a Kinect since our personal trainer suggested Dance Central as a good, fun workout and we had coupons / gift cards that made the Kinect basically free. Since we were there, and I have AC3 coming, I picked up Assassin's Creed Revelations. They also had a God of War Saga plus controller bundle. GoW 3 was on my wishlist and we needed another PS3 controller, so I grabbed that as well. I've beaten GoW 1 and 2 already, so they aren't going on the pile, but GoW 3 is. The case came with download codes for Chains of Olympus, and Ghost of Sparta, and I'm not sure if they are for the PSP versions, or were ported to PS3. If they are on PS3, then they get added also.

I beat Saints Row: The Third!

Was shorter than I would have liked, but still enjoyable.

That's what she said...

Actually, to make a constructive post for a change.

I forgot, but I added Midnight Club Complete Edition to my pile (eBay win, cheaper than when it was on sale over the holiday break, plus physical copy, rather than GoD).

Also, Sega Allstar Racing Transformed, and How to Train Your Dragon. Both of these under $30 imported (SRP $69 and upwards local) and both under the excuse of 'for the kids'. They loved the first all star racing, and have been bugging me about the new one "where Sonic and Mabotnick fly" plus they will get a kick out of making their own Dragons in the other title, as they loved the movie.

It doesn't hurt either that I will play those fairly soon after receiving them (still in transit for the UK) as they are fairly easy in giving up the Cheevs, and the GTASC is in full swing.

So, five off, three on, still in front?!?!

EDIT:
He he, look at that, I 'earnt' me a new badge!?!?

I realize the Steam sale ain't over yet, but I'll edit the below in 2 days. Only one impulse buy so far, which I am quite happy about. Not sure which game to declare for this month. Fallout 3 may be too long. BL2 I play co-op only and my only buddy just got back into WoW. SMGalaxy may be the most probable one, if it wasn't for all the bowl games and NFL playoffs this month. And SpaceChem is way to brainy of a game to casually play. I may be close to the "I see what you did there" point of abandoning it.

Just made my first bit of progress. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is done. I posted in the January pile thread about it, but liked it a bit more than the previous 2 in some ways but can't quite put my finger something feeling a bit off. Also, loading my game save the 1st time ever time the system boots took forever! I mean, the theme would play and end before loading finished.

So The Last Story is an interesting game to beat. I thought I had an hour left between the final boss and the ending, but they pull a couple of pleasant surprises your way.

Got one game off the pile for the month at least.

I've beaten Episodes 2 and 3 of The Walking Dead this month already, and started up Episode 4 this weekend. About 40 minutes in I hit a section that made me want to throw the controller. I haven't been this pissed at a game in a long while.

Spoilers for WD Ep 4.

Spoiler:

The group makes it to Savannah, and Kenny and Lee go to the riverfront to look for a boat. All the boats are jacked, but they spot someone who they think may be the person stalking them and decided to corner them in a kiosk in order to question them.

Kenny goes to the side, maybe 10 or 15 feet away and draws his gun to cover Lee. Lee approaches directly. I tried to go around to the side where the kiosk was open to block the exit, but the game wouldn't let me. When I look over the counter, the person isn't there. Despite that Lee would easily see them come around the side of the Kiosk (which is 3 feet away), he is surprised no one is there. The person shows up behind Lee and (failing one of the crappy QTEs) knocks him to the ground and nearly kills him with an ice climber's pick before Lee talks them out of it. Kenny must be be temporarily blind and deaf because we have enough time for Lee to get to his feet and the person to introduce herself as Molly.

When Kenny finally regains his sight and hearing (at least a minute after this started), he trots up. Lee tells him not to shoot Molly, tipping her off that he's behind her, and because he was stupid enough to get within arms reach (no way he'd do that with a Zombie, so why with a clearly violent live person?), she trips him. If Lee hadn't yelled at her that Kenny was with him she'd have ice picked his brain, despite from the interaction 2 seconds earlier that fact should have been clear.

It's the worst case of rail roading I've seen in a long while, made so much worse by the fact that, up until this point, the game was giving at least a pretty good illusion of choice. A few minutes later, I got killed as soon as I switched screens. That one was my fault, since I noticed the screen getting red to indicate danger as I approached the screen transition, but that doesn't make it less frustrating. Fixed cameras are find when done well, but by their nature, the player has less (or at least different) information than the character, which can be incredibly irritating when the game draws attention to it.

This is the thread for angsting over new purchases, right?

Come February first, I'll finally have some money to buy a new game for my 3DS. I've had about $10 worth of eShop credit burning a hole in my pocket since Christmas, but I've held onto it so that I can give myself a nice discount off one shiny new digital release. I've narrowed it down to one of four games. Here are the contenders and their merits:

  • Paper Mario: Sticker Star - This one came out back in November, but I'm still pretty keen to play it. On the plus side, it's one I'm really enthusiastic about. On the minus side, I'm not sure it's a good fit for a digital purchase. It's shorter than the other games I'm considering, and there's always a possibility I could borrow someone's cart and be just as happy.
  • Unchained Blades - I love XSEED, and I want to support their first major 3DS release. On the plus side, it looks like my kind of game, and I'd be able to support my favorite publisher. (It's also $10 cheaper than the other three options.) Conversely, it's gotten only so-so reviews, and it's a dungeon crawler; I already have Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey, another dungeon crawler, sitting on my pile.
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening - Ever since I finished up Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, I've been wanting another turn-based strategy game on my 3DS. This looks like it would be a good fit, and I really enjoyed the demo. However, I haven't played a Fire Emblem game before, and for some reason that's making me a little less excited for this game than the others.
  • Etrian Odyssey IV - This one comes out later in the month, but I've had my eye on it since it was released in Japan. I haven't played an Etrian Odyssey game before, but I've loved everything I've seen about it. The look, the atmosphere, the map-making, etc. However, as with Unchained Blades, it's a dungeon crawler, and I'll also admit to being a little intimidated by its reportedly high difficulty level.

What do you think, guys? Which way should I jump?

Of that list, I'm personally most interested in Fire Emblem: Awakening and Etrian Odyssey IV, though I haven't played the demos of either yet.

Based on your post, I'd go with Fire Emblem, since you liked the demo and the only drawback seems to be that you haven't played a game in that series, and (presumably) not knowing what to expect is making you hesitant.

Mario games typically have three save slots, so borrowing a cart should be fine.

I'd take Etrian Odyssey IV off the list right now. It looks really interesting based on the videos, but also gives me some concerns, even aside from the bit of it being hard. Mainly whether first person and making my own map will click. It's a less obvious choice. I don't know anything about Unchained Blades, but if you are thinking about adding another dungeon crawler to the pile, you should go with this over EO IV since it's cheaper and from your favorite publisher. If you are still leaning towards EO IV anyway, I think there either is, or will be a demo, so wait to play that before you jump on it.

Garden Ninja wrote:

There's 3 save slots, although I'm not 100% sure if the save data is written to the cart or the SD card. I can test with Demyx anyone needs verification on this.

Etrian comes out later this month? Didn't Atlus just announce a demo for it on 2/7?

By the sound of it, I agree with Garden. I think you'll be happier with Fire Emblem based on the concerns with the other games. Sounds like your main hold-up with Unchained Blades and EO IV is due to Strange Journey sitting in the pile.

Well, looks like I'm already in the negative for this month. I've only beat one game, and I've added Ni No Kuni and Persona 4 Arena to the pile. Goooooo me!

They save to the cart. 3DS games are required to be fully usable without an SD card.

I meant later in Feburary.

Yeah, it's mainly Strange Journey clogging up the works. I should get through that one, but I'm stuck on one of the bosses and it's made me grumpy.

Well, hell, if that's it, then remember you can just kick the thing to the curb if its being frustrating.

Typically, we just post updated lists at the start of each month. Updating old lists messes with the thread-tracking, and posting new, updated lists more often than once a month makes Minarchist grouchier than a wrinkled dandy button-up.

Thanks a bunch, Clockwork! I'm just excited and pretty happy with myself, I didn't think I'd get through so many games this month (granted, those aren't big games). Now if I could just stop being such a chicken and get back to Dead Space...

I reposted the list every month in the beginning of the year, and switched to posting just the delta for the month in May. I found that format was a lot easier to read, assuming the goal was to see what the progress was for the month, vs year to date.

This year, I was planning on doing deltas, and maybe post of the full list quarterly.

Last year I tracked my pile in Backloggery and a separate text file. I decided to switch the text file to a google doc spreadsheet and I added some hooks to help make posts here easier.

There is a column "GWJ Post" which is the BBCode for ListItems of each game, with the platform in parentheses, plus the icons backloggery icons for the playthrough status, and whether the game is new this year. It just needs to be wrapped in [ LIST ] tags. For posting the full list, I can sort by title, then copy that column. For posting deltas, I can copy by the Acquired Date and copy the rows that are new that month, plus the rows that are Off the Pile that month.

The second tab has some stats. How many games in each status, progress, estimated remaining hours. There is also another "GWJ Post" set of cells for remaining games (Unfinished and Unplayed) and Progress (Beaten + Dropped - New).

The spreadsheet is here and should be visible to anyone wiht the link. Anyone who wants to copy it is welcome. I hope it's useful.

Games that need Finishing:

2 of 20 (10%) Completed

Games I want to keep playing/or start playing but realize are unbeatable but love playing them anyways:
(Also known as three PC Space Games I want to play and Civ V: Gods and Kings)

Purchases for 2013 that will go straight onto the Pile:

Thanks for this tip, I was having difficulty figuring out how to bring the Backloggery icons in, was using HTML tags instead of BBCode tags, hence why they didn't show up.

I also added Darksiders and Darksiders 2 onto my pile, I was able to get the Darksiders collection cheap a week or so ago from Amazon during these sad THQ firesales.

I also added Fez to my 2013 purchases, would like to play it, especially if it came out on Steam.

I've been plugging away at Far Cry 3, feel like I am half way through, really starting to feel the power of my character and getting into exploring the world more.

Holy cow, Garden Ninja, you've got this down to an art!! I'll copy off your paper, if that's okay with you! I do love my organized spreadsheets!

Very excited to do my update this month's end. I've made some great pile progress, feeling pumped!

Glad I could help. Limited HTML is allowed in posts, but it looks like < IMG > isn't in the list of allowed tags.

Of course. That's why I posted it.

I'm working on a site that will have Pile support, but I hit a wall at the beginning of December with trying to develop on Windows and haven't had enough motivation to get Linux set up on my laptop. (Well, I sort of did finally last week, but something goofed the install and it won't boot.) I really need to get back to that because I do enjoy side projects and I'm fairly close to having enough for a beta at least.

Are you kidding, that spreadsheet was awesome!! I spent some time tweaking it so that all my games for my pile were in there, but it's incredibly handy, very nicely done, I love you for posting it!! Certainly satisfies my love of the neat and tidy! Was certainly mind-blowing to discover some games have been in my pile for nearly 1,000 days... O_O
I won't bug you because I know what it's like having your plate full, but a site with pile support... Yup, I'm game!

Ditto. I filled that column in by digging back through the backloggery memory card. I was hesitant to add it at first (maybe I wouldn't like the answer), but I figured it would be useful for prioritization. If I've had a game for a long time, that is a hint that I should either get to it soon, or just punt it. Though, to be honest, I am fudging dates a bit. For example, I had Final Fantasy XIII a couple of years ago and dropped it midway through, but last Fall, I decided to try it out again. The acquired date I put down is when I got it again, not when I got it originally. Also, I've had Dragon Age on the pile for a long time, but recently decided to switch platforms and play it on 360 instead of PC. When my copy arrives (in the next couple of days hopefully), I'll switch the date to when I got the 360 copy.

Eleima wrote:

No worries. A bit of pressure is probably a good motivation, because I do really want to get it up and running. For reference, here is the thread where I've been posting updates (infrequent, though they may be).

m0nk3yboy wrote:

And based on the size of the pile, we'll continue to be doing it for a good while longer.

I was weak, Sleeping Dogs was $10 on Steam so I bought it. Add it to the pile. Still working on The Last Story... There's not enough time!

What is my consequence for my transgression?
