2013 - 12 month pile thread. Hello New Year, good bye pile!

Well, I highly doubt I'll have the time to beat anything in December considering how chaotic things have been, so I may as well start on my 2013 list now. I might edit this with another game or two, as I'm still undecided on whether I'll be purchasing Resident Evil 6 today. I'm also undecided on whether I'll be trading certain games in or not.

Any game I previously had a star on I am removing, as it has been long enough that I might as well give up (with the exception of Xenoblade and Dragon's Dogma). Also, I am removing Doom 3 BFG from the pile as it is a game I've played before and thus do not feel pressured to go through, nor do I feel guilt if it is unfinished. I like having it around, basically.

KEY:
* == Game I started
Bold == Game I'm actively working on
Strike == Game I've completed

Games in my collection I would like to finish/watch the credits roll:

- Lost Odyssey
- Ico/Shadow of the Colossus
- Legend of Zelda: The Skyward Sword
- Dragon Age: Origins: Awakening
- Dragon Age 2
- Donkey Kong Country Returns
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Epic Mickey
- Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment
- DeBlob 2
- Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
- Dead Rising 2
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Pokemon Conquest
- Xenoblade Chronicles*
- Dragon's Dogma*
- Guilty Party
- The Last Story
- Borderlands 2
- Dead Island
- The Sly Cooper Collection
- Assassin's Creed 3
- Fatal Frame II
- Paper Mario: Sticker Star
- Far Cry 3
- Resident Evil 6

Status: 0 of 26 (0%)

Other:

- L.A. Noire DLC

Status: 0 of 1 (0%)

On-going (Games I doubt I'll ever truly "finish")

- Little Big Planet
- NHL 13

Status: 0 of 2 (0%)

I can actually look past the stupidity of the story, but the controls are clunky as hell and despite the veneer of Metroid, it doesn't feel like Metroid at all.

So many people say that. I just want to believe so badly that you're all just terrible and suck at this wonderful game that has the misfortune of terrible writing.

Hi all. I just created a backloggery account and am inputting games now.

I need help with the whole pile thing, and resisting the urge to buy new games. So here I am.

Everyone seems to have the same struggles as I do, so I'm glad I'm not alone. Hopefully we can help each other.

I'm committed to only two 2013 games, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, and one other TBD. No more. It seems harsh but drastic measures are needed if I want to get the pile down to zero. That's right, I'm aiming for pile zero.

This is my public declaration.

Update: OK, I forgot that I pre-ordered Rayman Legends and Pikmin 3 for 2013. So there's those ones too. Anyway, I finished with Backloggery... that was informative.

I've found that by being more selective and being willing to jettison games that aren't fun, getting to pile zero is obtainable. However, it's not what I'm aiming for, personally. I like having a few games to choose from, and while the pile is going to get whittled down even more, I'm pretty happy with how 2012 went for me.

I shouldn't be surprised that Christmas is making the pile bigger, but it is. Some Amazon credit went to a copy of Spirit Camera on the 3DS, and my mom got me $20 of Nintendo eShop credit, the first time I've gotten a video gaming gift from my family since I was a kid. I haven't spent it yet because I'm trying to decide just what to get (Fluidity and another game? $20 off Unchained Blades? $20 off Sticker Star?) Not that I'm complaining. Always fun to get new stuff.

Mine too. Well, I've picked up several items during the steam and XBLA sales (and may get more before they are over) but I've also dropped several items, so I guess it's a wash.

So far, I've added

  • Dust: An Elysian Tail (XBLA)
  • Joe Danger 2: The Movie (XBLA)
  • Mark of the Ninja (Steam)
  • Thirty Flights of Loving (Steam)

I was thinking of picking up The Walking Dead on XBLA (I played the first episode there), since all the episodes are supposed to go on sale in the next couple of days. However, considering I just reminded myself what I don't like about adventure games, I might skip it.

The only one I've played so far is Mark of the Ninja. I originally wanted it on XBLA, but missed the sale the other day. Then a goodjer gifted it to me through steam. I played the first level this morning and was seriously impressed with the keyboard controls. I played the demo of the XBLA version and I really expected that I would need to plug in the controller (it being a 2D platformer), but MKB controls are really well done. Stealth kills especially gave me trouble, but with a mouse the mini-QTE actually works.

In addition to the stuff I listed a few posts up, I decided to drop Majesty 2 as well. I played a mission last night (the third or fourth one I think) and was getting swarmed by skeletons and wolves and rats pretty much from the get go. I had to restart twice and look up a good starting build order. It was okay after a bit when I had heroes to actually fight the monsters, but for the first 20 minutes or so my villagers were getting killed and their homes and my guard towers getting razed. It wasn't fun. Considering that mission was marked as "Novice" difficulty, I don't think it's worth playing further. This game suffers from the same problems that makes me dislike most RTS's. The parts of RTS I like are the tech trees, resource gathering and base building. Some combat is good, but not so much that I have to really think about it to hard. The only game like that that I've found is Kingdom for Keflings, which I really enjoyed, but it only had one map, and the interface could have been smoother, so it wasn't super replayable. I haven't played the sequel, World of Keflings, but it's on sale on XBLA right now, so I might pick it up. I realized this morning actually that, despite being a very different kind of game, Terraria has been scratching that City Builder itch.

However, considering I just reminded myself what I don't like about adventure games,

They don't apply to The Walking Dead. Trust me.

Yeah, ultimately I only got Fatal Frame 2 and Assassin's Creed 3 for Christmas, but using money from Christmas I went out and added Far Cry 3, Resident Evil 6 and Paper Mario Sticker Star to the list. Holding off from all other game purchases until Aliens in February.

ccesarano wrote:

I probably should pick it up then. I did play the first episode, but couldn't really remember the gameplay when I posted. Thinking a bit about it now, I remember the story bits being really cool, the dialog system being cool and some of the gameplay being pretty fun. Some of the gameplay was meh, but I don't remember anything really annoying. Except screwing up a dialog option because I mentally inserted the word "No" into a response when there wasn't one. Oh, and

Spoiler:

Larry. Eff that guy.

I'd say any puzzle elements in Episode 1 are typically the most obtuse you'll get in that series, so the typical problems of Adventure games where you have to go ten screens back to feed the Cheez-It to the pidgeon to make it explode and get the watch from its entrails that contains the key to the sewer which has the switch that unlocks the door are pretty much nonexistent.

Ugh, since Thanksgiving, the pile has grown quite a bit:

  • Sine Mora - gift from Monkeyboy
  • Infamous 2 - PS+ freebie
  • Quantum Conundrum - PS+ freebie
  • Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One - PS+ freebie
  • Super Street Fighter 4 - PS+ freebie
  • Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - Christmas gift
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands - gift from Manach
  • Torchlight II - gift from Psych
  • The Walking Dead - gift from TheCounselor
  • Borderlands - The only one I bought.

At least I managed to beat Street Fighter.

Also, many thanks to the gifting from Goodjers! I also passed on a game from Maverickz instead of adding it to the pile since I was pretty sure I wouldn't get into it. So there's that small bit of resisting the pile additions. And of those games added, only Street Fighter wasn't on a list to get of some sort.

Do I even want to assess the damage at this point? Since the Steam sale started, I've gotten Fable: The Lost Chapters, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. I figured I'd go easy because my pile is already huge, so I settled for gifting games I've enjoyed and/or know people will like. Egad, I didn't count on the community giving back - hard. I got gifted: The Basement Collection, Offspring Fling, Cave Story +, Dungeon Defenders, Snapshot, Shank 2, Closure, Bunch of Heroes, Secret of the Magic Crystals, Peggle Deluxe, To the Moon, Flight Control, the Commander Keen pack, Alice: Madness Returns, Eufloria, Super Meat Boy, and Botanicula.

Thank goodness I've finished Botanicula, and am almost done with Saints Row: The Third. :p

My backlog numbers 61 unfinished games and announces:

Unfinished - No significant accomplishments. What injustice did these poor games commit to incur such neglect? No one knows for sure. They now spend their days sitting on shelves, silently crying out to be played. The most unfortunate are still encased in their shrink wrap tombs, having never once been nestled in the warm embrace of a game system.

Way to make me feel guilty, Backloggery!! Oh and How Long to Beat estimates 37 days, 11 hours to finish my pile. I'm done for.

I feel your pain Eleima. I'm hovering around 50 games on my pile, many of which are very long RPGs. That doesn't even include the many games I haven't gotten around to buying yet that I want.

Some major life changes in the past year have cut down quite a bit on my video game playing time, so I'm considering just mentally deleting my backlog and enjoying what I can, when I can. I get frustrated by the amount of anxiety my backlog causes me, to the point where it interferes with my enjoyment of whatever I actually am playing at the moment. I'm still playing Skyrim over a year after release, and am enjoying it. That should be enough.

Eleima wrote:

I'm in a similar boat, but far worse. The D&D bundle from GOG is responsible for a huge amount of the number of hours on my pile, with over a hundred for Baldur's Gate 2 alone! I've decided that I'm not even going to try to finish most of these, and that I'm totally Ok with that.

Garden Ninja wrote:

I'm dropping Magicka & Magicka: Vietnam (Steam) from the pile. I played through about half of this with shoptroll and another goodjers whose name escapes me, and really enjoyed it. However, it's hard to play single player and most of the fun is in the co-op anyway, and we haven't set up another session in the last 8 months. Like I said, I dig it, so I'm leaving it installed, but it's not a pile game anymore. Shoppy, I'm happy to co-op this with you, if it's still on your pile. Let me know.

It's still on my pile, I just need to be more active about cat herding people into playing this with me. If it doesn't get done this year, it's off the list permanently.

ClockworkHouse wrote:

I feel your pain. I haven't added too much but I think the Square-Enix sale and an Amazon gift card is going to ding me before end of year.

So far:
* McPixel (PC) - Received as a gift on Steam
* New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) - Gift from parents.

I've done really well avoiding the Steam sale, and I've been using GOG to essentially get backup copies of games I already had. Although there is that new humble bundle....

I've added a slew of games thanks to PS+, but I'm putting those in a "Want to see if I like them then I'll commit to them if I feel up to it" section of my list.

I decided to jump on the remaining Walking Dead episodes, since they are on sale. Looks like Xbox.com is getting slammed today though, because I was getting errors pages (even a Yellow Screen of Death) this morning, and when it finally let me buy the 4 episodes, it would only let me add 2 of them to my download queue.

Listening to podcasts and such, it sounds like there is a lot of really good stuff on PS+, but considering my current pile and the fact that I never play my PS3 (I think I turned it on once in the last year), I haven't felt like I could justify it. There are a couple of exclusives I want to play though, so maybe I should pick one or two up, and consider PS+.

Obligatory backlogger oath

  • I solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.
  • I will not shop for games unless I actually plan to buy something and play it right away.
  • I also pledge to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group and play them all the way through right away.

Well, my list will probably be shorter than others, but here it is:

Now Playing:
Dark Souls
XCOM
Rainbow Six: Vegas

Games I Plan to Play in 2013:
Bioshock
Bioshock 2
Dishonored
Knights of the Old Republic 2
EndWar
Rainbow Six: Vegas 2
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Wargame: European Escalation

Games of 2013 I am Interested In:

Company of Heroes 2
Europa Universalis 4
Rome 2: Total War

Past Games I'm Still Interested In:
The Witcher 2

I've got a good start going on these already, about 15 hours into Dark Souls, 6 into XCOM, and a few into Vegas. I'm honestly not really sure I will see the credits roll on Vegas, I played it through several times on my 360 back in the day and just wanted it for archival purposes on PC (also applies to Vegas 2). Money will probably be pretty tight this year (new car, wife in college, etc.) so I am hoping to get those three 2013 games squeezed in somewhere, kind of depends on when they end up dropping. I'm pretty confident I can get through all that stuff on my list pretty quickly, my goal is to be done with Vegas in some way by Jan 2 when I go back to work.

It is time for me to put together my list for 2013. I have been reading the PS+ forum on here but have not pulled the trigger on it, knowing that I have a decent size pile (Backloggery says about 60 games). I think that is a wise decision. At the end of 2013, I might have to follow Garden Ninja's lead and do a big purge. For now, though, here goes:

Now Playing:
Radiant Historia (DS)
Pixel Junk Shooter (PSN)
Final Fantasy Tactics (PS)

Games to Play in 2013:
3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
Little Big Planet (PS3)
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit (PS3)
Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction (PS3)
Ratchet and Clank: Crack in Time (PS3)
Lego Lord of the Rings (PS3)
Lego Batman 2 (PS3)
Jeanne D'Arc (PSP)
Tactics Ogre (PSP)
Burnout Revenge (PS2)
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (PS2)
Odin Sphere (PS2)
Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)
Disgaea 1/2 (PS2)

2013 Games I Am Interested In:
Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Lightning Returns (FF XIII-3)

The second half of 2013 will be pretty busy for me so I better get going.

Happy New Pile! This was an iOS-heavy month for me.

Current Games: New Super Mario Bros. U, Final Fantasy XIII

The Pile:

  • Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • Sonic Generations
  • Final Fantasy XIII-2
  • Rhythm Heaven Fever
  • Mass Effect
  • Final Fantasy VI
  • Bastion
  • Fez
  • Xenoblade Chronicles
  • Quantum Conundrum
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Ratchet and Clank
  • Torchlight
  • The Binding of Isaac
  • Diablo III
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy

[*] Home Sweet Home
[*] Mikey Shorts
[*] Dream Chronicles
[*] Bar Oasis
[*] Demons' Score
[*] Mikey Shorts Halloween
[*] Bar Oasis 1.5
[*] Groove Coaster Zero

Here's my list. There are games that I own that are not on the list, but I'm going to restrict myself to this subset until I start clearing a few things off. I'll work on adding the full list onto Backloggery, as well. I'll mark things as "null" that aren't listed below. Items below are either marked as unplayed or unfinished, and the status will be changed to beaten or completed after I'm done with the game or it's done with me.

As far as new games, I have not been going out of my way to look for upcoming releases, so if something looks especially interesting, I'm OK with buying it. I'll just mark that down as a couple of wildcards. Most of the pile is due to poor impulse control and community generosity during Steam sales.

When I started taking a hard look at the pile, and saw things purchased/gifted over a year ago that I haven't touched yet... well, I knew I needed to be in this thread.

Now Playing:
Faerie Solitaire
Middle Manager of Justice
PathPix
Snapshot
Skyrim

Done: (Finished or abandoned):

Games I plan to play this year (alphabetical):
Bastion
Bioshock
Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble
Dragon Age: Origins
FTL
Half Minute Hero
Kingdom Rush (iOS)
Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii)
Mass Effect
Psychonauts
Puzzle Agent
SPAZ
Stacking
Swords and Soldiers HD (story mode)
Thief
The Witcher

Upcoming games I'm interested in:
Bioshock: Infinite
Skyrim: Dragonborn
*wildcard - Spring, birthday present for myself in March*
*wildcard - Summer/Fall.*
*wildcard - $15 iTunes credit*

Other games I still want to buy:
Little Inferno: $7 or less

The pledge:
1. I solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

2. I will not shop for games unless I actually plan to buy something and play it right away.

3. I also pledge to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group and play them all the way through right away.

edit: Forgot about the upcoming Skyrim DLC, which I intend to buy.

Here's my list, which I sadly started curating a month or two ago when I need a place to put the games that bumped out of 2012.

A couple of notes:
1) Trying something slightly different this year. I wanted a mini-pile that felt manageable, but there's a large number of games in my backlog I want to play. So I basically made a [second tier of games] that unlocks as I complete games in the main tier. Will this work? I have no idea, but it seemed like it might be a less intimidating way to plan things.
2) With the exception of a couple JRPGs, most games on the mini-pile should be done in under 20 hours according to HowLongToBeat. This pleases me, and I intend to attempt ccesarano's Long/Short method of working through the pile.
3) Too many Kickstarter games, hoping many of them slide to 2014, although I expect a bunch of them to be under 10 hours. If anything they're a good incentive to keep the list of retail games short.

I, shoptroll, solemnly pledge to take part in the Pile of Shame monthly threads. Even if it is just for one game, I will put forth effort to clear my ever-growing pile, one game at a time.

I also pledge to do everything within my ability to restrict my game purchases to those that I've listed, and, if I should falter, will shamefully add them to the pile in full sight of this support group.

In addition, I would like to accomplish the following:
1) Achieve equilibrium for the pile. Barring that, I would like to end the year with at most a -15 change to my Backloggery score.

Edited my earlier list with a few minor tweaks. I'm going to continue last year's personal policy of posting the full list every 3-4 months, with a progress update at the end of each month.

Looks like my games for January are Resident Evil 6, Borderlands 2 (still), The Last Story (still) and Paper Mario: Sticker Star (I think I'll actually finish this one!)

Yay for Last Story!

Well I shouldn't have done it but went on How Long To Beat and estimated it will take 550 hours or so to beat my 2013 pile. I'll get through as much as I can but knowing my current gaming habits it will take through 2014 to finish things.

Well. That was an interesting exercise. With some fudging of the numbers, I came up with about 640 hours worth of games on the list I published above. I think that puts me into 2015, depending on how far off I was with my estimates. I will keep the number in mind and perhaps be a bit more ruthless about the idea of being "done".

For those that missed it, the OP is updated, and here is the link for this month's pile thread, Welcome Back, Keepers of the Pile.

Some of you have already stumbled upon it, and made your pledge for the month. Those who haven't yet, look through your yearly commitment, then commit to a title to tackle this month.

Enjoy!

How Long to Beat estimates 43 days, 11 hours, that's 1043 hours. No wonder with games like Fallout, Dark Souls, Risen, and the King's Bounty games. I'm done for, I tell you!!

Sadly, I would run out of space if I listed my pile. Is this some kind of intervention?
