I generally try to avoid getting on board the hype train for anything this early, but watch this trailer and tell me you blame me.
Yes, it's teaser-y beyond belief. Yes, there is only the vaguest of indications of what kind of game it is, and no indication of what platforms it is being developed for. Yes, the developer's only previous work is a fun but limited in scope modern take on Excitebike. But goddamn, that trailer still makes me excited as hell -- as does this little news story over at Polygon with just the lightest of details from a brief interview with the developers.
"We want the future to be cool again."
Players begin the game at the outer perimeter of the universe and are invited to move towards the center, although this is a difficult quest that takes "intelligence, imagination and co-operation," according to Murray. The universe is a dangerous place, and so there is plenty of combat and peril. It's not just about wandering around looking at the pretty fauna. .
But the desire to go out there and look at the universe is at the center of this game's emotional appeal. Murray was born in Ireland but spent his formative years in the extreme outback of Australia, a hostile and beautiful place, but also one marked by isolation.
"As a child I would look at the sky at night and all the stars and I would want to visit them," he said. "That's the feeling I got later, when I would read books from the golden age of sci-fi, from the '60s and the '70s, and that's what we want to do with No Man's Sky."
Yes please.
Also, very much a yes please to that visual aesthetic. Gritty realism is nice and all, but give me bright, bizarre, and surreal over it any day of the week, thanks.
EDIT: Here's another very nice interview and writeup via Rock Paper Shotgun.
EDIT 2: Here's part 2 of the RPS coverage.
EDIT 3: Rev3Games video interview:
Who's Many?
He's the dude without a sky.
This is the sort of teaser that can get non-gamers on board with gaming. It may be misleading as far as depth goes, but who cares, it looks like alot of fun.
Has there been any talk of what platforms it'll be on yet?
I think there's a pretty good write of it on Rock Paper Shotgun:

It looks pretty amazing. The most exciting thing on that "awards" show.
I'm kind of getting Spore vibes from this.

None.
If I had to speculate, I'd guess that they are probably hoping to score some backing from a big publisher, or perhaps even Microsoft or Sony, before discussing that, just in case they might be able to get a sizable chunk of change to make it an exclusive.
With a RPS article, it's clearly going to be on PC at some point.
I thought the VGX interview said something about next gen consoles.
I'll buy it twice, where do I pay?
That looks pretty sweet, but I've seen a lot of really sweet-looking open world games lately (for instance, Nether), which I will never ever play because one of the game mechanics is someone better/richer/younger than I killing me for my stuff over and over.
If this has a mode/setting/server where other players can't ruin my life then I'm absolutely in. This reminds me a bit of Spore, back when it was just Will Wright giving a presentation.
When I saw this on RPS, I immediately looked for the Kickstarter link, then I was confused that there wasn't one. How do I give them money?
I also really liked the Homeworld vibe to the space stuff (even though it's first rather than third person the colour palette and spaghetti trails made me all misty eyed).
Agreed about the interaction. Can I have a horrid misanthrope mode where I don't have to interact with anyone else?
I'm kind of getting Spore vibes from this.
I thought the exact same thing.
The visuals are really great, but I'm puzzled about this: what are you actually doing in the game?
It looks exploration-based. Something like Elite or Freelancer maybe?
More description of the game here:
http://www.gamespot.com/videos/what-...
It is not just exploration, there is a goal, there is scaling difficulty.
Tagging, already posted my excitement in the space games thread.
I like space exploration games, but I feel like there are signs that they are still in the early development stages.
That gamespot video doesn't improve my confidence. They really didn't say much that I couldn't already guess from the teaser trailer, with the exception that the developers aren't sure what platform they're going to be on. Oh and they haven't really talked to Sony or Microsoft.
As far as I can tell the trailer was to generate buzz so they might secure some revenue.
Agreed, Motleyai. There's a 50/50 on this being anything engaging. The potential and reach of the game, though, is remarkable. And if the game is good, it could be a unique, gorgeous experience.
I always get optimistic by default at the idea of new space games and I so hope this is great but yeah, this is being done by like a team of 4 people who made the Joe Danger series before which is decidedly different from this. But I can't wait to see more. Between this and Star Citizen, Microsoft needs to startup the SideWinder business again!

In more ways than one...

I assume you mean that as a sick Spore burn. If so, nice burn.
In the Gamespot video they did add a couple of potentially interesting aspects of the game:
Apparently it is going to have steeply ramping difficulty curve as the game progresses.
It is a shared universe with other players. As they discover their procedurally generated universe it will add to a star map shared by (all?) other players in the game. That sounds odd, whether it's interesting or not.
I'm still skeptical, but both of these considerations could be nice turns for the game.
The potential and reach of the game, though, is remarkable.
How can you even tell? All I see is pretty graphics.

There are two pretty in-depth articles over on RPS. I'm very interested after reading those.

At least they've made games recently, unlike many of the Kickstarters out there.

Yeah, definitely too early to tell if the finished product will live up to any hype that's being generated. But one thing that really got my attention, during the VGX interview, Sean Murray mentioned that the type of sci-fi he grew up with, and that is inspiring this game, is NOT the typical gritty post-apocalyptic stuff that has become pretty standard fair of late. He mentioned all the nerd-bait name - Heinlein, Asimov, etc - and specifically talked about the covers of those books where it would be a space ship crash landed on some remote planet. I'm kinda hoping it's like a full game of just the planetary exploration parts of Mass Effect 1.
