Persona 5

I really need to pick up Catherine one of these days.

I'm kinda glad that Persona 5 won't be out in the US for a while. I should be moved by the time it finally releases, which means I stand a chance of playing it. It took me a month and a half to finish Last of Us recently, with how little time I get to game on the TV. At that rate, it'd take me about six months to work through a Persona game.

Now, if they put it out on the WiiU...

I FINALLY have Catherine and a system to play on. It's part of my 2014 pile.

The Persona games caught my interest at the same time I began studying at the theater. I was genuinely making friends for the first time in many years, and it all just clicked together very well.

Catherine hasn't hooked me yet. I feel like it will be very hit or miss, too.

psoplayer. Thank you for speaking up about the translator. Nothing made me think it was bs. but this IS the Internet.

You could always hope for remote play on a Vita and PS3. If you have a Vita, of course.

2015 for North America.

Good of them to pin things down so precisely.

It doesn't have a firm release date in Japan. Why would it have a firm release date for North America?

Because we want it more? Gimmie it!

Oh, I don't necessarily expect it to. I just found it funny that it's being reported as news by gaming websites. A year is a really broad timespan. The splash screen message should have just said, "Stop Spamming Facebook, you Nerds! Of course it's coming to the US."

That would have been a better message, yes.

I thought Japan was 2014 (ie. Fall/winter)? I'm not terribly surprised we won't see it until next year.

Arise thread~

So glad to see it announced for PS4!!

I'd forgotten that it had been announced for PS3 already. Getting reminded made me happy cuz I was sad I was going to miss it by not having a PS4.

I'm a big fan of the main character design and the general art aesthetic. I was not a fan of P4's art, so that teaser makes me happy.

The new logo makes it look like a racing game. Otherwise, I was surprised by how little interest I had in it. I think SMT IV really damaged my interest in Persona.

Different strokes- SMTIV killed any interest in non-persona smt games for me.

I was pretty reluctant to try my first Persona game specifically because of my negative experience with SMTIV. I thought this universe might just not be for me, but I loved P4G.

I'm very much looking forward to P5, but I hope it gets announced for Vita sometime before release. I don't think this kind of long-form JRPG works as well for me on the home consoles as on a portable device anymore.

This. Times a thousand.

I felt way more positive about Persona 4 (Golden) than SMT IV. That said I will gladly play both Persona 5 and SMT V. Neither game turned me off minus the map in SMT IV which we don't need to rehash. I can see, though, how SMT IV would turn someone off of Persona, honestly. The story in SMT IV was interesting and the world was really cool. I like the friendship building in Persona, though. And the overall presentation, music, etc.

I just wish SMTIV ended up on Vita. Although I do own a 3DS now, I just haven't seen SMTIV anywhere. I think it released late here and by the time it did, all the hype had faded so I kinda forgot it existed.

It's still not out in Australia, actually. It comes out this month? Next?

That's totally fair. I found that I ultimately far prefer the directness of the mainline SMT games: exploring locations, negotiating with demons, micro-managing the composition of my party and their abilities. In retrospect, the Persona games are much more indirect and much less flexible. The focus is more on character and story, which is cool but, to me, makes combat feel tacked on. I'd almost rather just do the school parts and skip the dungeon grinding.

Oh wow yeah, just realised it releases this month. Shows how much attention I've been paying.

Persona 5 is definitely on my radar though, I'll be keeping a very close eye on the release date for that.

Good to know I'm not the only one who thought that.

I actually like the school parts and the grinding because it gives the games a very unique rhythm you can't find anywhere else. There's something about planning for the dungeon dives by working on your social links and shopping for gear, and trying to deal with all the schedule conflicts that arise (especially in P4 where exploring the dungeons conflicts with almost everything) which is compelling to me.

I also really liked SMT IV even though I haven't finished it. While I feel like Persona is probably the more mainstream of the two, I really feel they're both two sides of the same coin. More of these games is not a bad thing.

If they can get the tone closer to Persona 3 and SMTIV then I'll be happy to jump on the bandwagon.

As much as I like P4 and its brand of insanity, I connected with SMTIV on a much deeper level tonally.

In all honesty, I'd actually prefer a surprise game like Catherine than P5, but who wouldn't??

Which version of P4 did you play? I've only played the original release, and though I thought it was somewhat lighter in tone than P3 because it took a different approach to Jungian philosophy, it wasn't all sunshine and puppy dogs until P4G and the aforementioned equine flagellation that has ensued since.

Well, yeah, seeing as how Catherine was like the best game of the last five years and all.

I'm about 20 hours into P4 (original) and I don't think it's all that much lighter than P3. It's a lot less oppressive as far as window dressing is concerned (TV world is a lot less dark than Tartarus and the lack of Evokers), but the underlying subject matter is still pretty dark. What in particular did Golden do that makes you think it's significantly lighter than P3?

To be fair, P3 is also getting a fair amount of representation in that equine flagellation.

Well, if you buy into the perspective that the P3 protagonist is simply stroking the egos of the people around him whether it's good for them or not there are plenty of dark undertones to go around. The relationships in P4 are much more about self affirmation and positive personal growth.

As far as that horse goes, it doesn't smell... yet... so I'm still happy to climb on and try to ride even if I have to make my own whinnying noises and clap two halves of a coconut shell together.

I have a friend who is very heavily into Persona 3 and 4. Every time she mentions P5 and asks me what I think about it I say that I will definitely play it when it comes out, but I wish they'd done something different to a group of teenagers in school. I really liked FES and consider it one of the best JRPGs which I've played. I thought P4G was mostly very good. The concept now feels played out to me, and the ever-increasing pile of tie-ins and spin-offs is gradually making me dislike the very sight of anything Persona. Her answer is usually, "But what if they were in university?" and "But what if they had an adult in the party, like a teacher?" It wouldn't change anything for me.

I look at the other SMT games and find the breadth and range of ideas and concepts much more appealing. I enjoyed FES and P4G, but I've played FES and P4G. I'm not hyped to play them again with what looks like a different cast and a few changes to the gameplay. I was hoping P5 would be closer to Persona 2: Eternal Punishment or Catherine. Yes, I know that I'm basically complaining that Persona is continuing the direction which made it popular. I told some clouds to stop moving this morning and would they listen?

I have not yet played SMTIV thanks to the lengthy European delay. Going from what I see in this thread it's probably going to be more my cup of tea than P5. I'll play P5 when it comes out here, ditto Persona Q. In the meantime I have SMT games in my backlog and I'm happy to wait. There's no sense of anticipation or urgency about the game for me. My friend is the opposite; she cannot wait for P5, P1, or that music game, and I don't think she's that bothered about SMTIV. As long as Atlus keeps up the variety we will both be happy.
