Tomorrow is Saturday, yo! Tonight is WEEGI TIME!

My son did not get the memo that Saturday morning is for sleeping in.

Dark times in this, our year of Luigi.

It looks like we will be getting a Wii U, but not until my son turns 4 at the earliest. That's fine, because I have a lot of Mario platforming skill to build before I attempt 3D World. In short, I am pretty much sucking at Super Mario 3D Land and can't let my 4 year old beat me when we get the console.

The first bonus world is tough, but boy do I love Rosalina.

I gotta say... This soundtrack is amazing. Ever since they started creating orchestrated music, I've been in love with the recent Mario game soundtracks. Some of my favorites (no spoilers):

I just read the requirements for the last five stamps:

Spoiler:

Beat every level in the game as each character for their icon stamp.

O_O

That said, I'll probably do it.

Nope. Not going to do that. I'm already starting to feel burn-out going back for flags, stars, and stamps.

I have all the stars, stamps, and flags through the first couple levels of World Mushroom.

Spoiler:

No way would I do that all again with each character, but just finishing the levels shouldn't take too long. So far, they're not too hard to finish if you're not trying to nab all the stuff.

That... Is amazing. I'll do it. I bet the levels get as difficult as the very last level in Super Mario 3D Land. Oh man.

The lucky cat upgrade is super cool.

I actually raged quit SMG 1 because there was one challenge I could not complete no matter how much I tried. I need to go back and master SMG 1 & 2 one day.

Was it getting purple coins on the giant pixel Mario? That's what caused me to rage quit SMG1.

I got every star in SMG2 except for the Grandmaster Galaxy challenge (one hit run). At that point I was like, I've seen every level, I'm done.

I was waiting for a price drop so I could enjoy Wind Waker HD, but Super Mario World put me over the edge. I cashed in some gift cards and picked up the 32GB Zelda bundle yesterday. Super Mario World is amazing, and definitely a reason to own the system!

That's my experience with the Galaxy games exactly. I couldn't do the Luigi purple coin run in Galaxy 1 and burned out in Galaxy 2 on the final Grandmaster challenge.

Also, bit of a brag here, but I'm proud:

I remember it like it was yesterday...

The star in question is hidden in one of the beach galaxies. A cannon launches you onto a giant sphere. This sphere is entire made of shrinking platforms so the second you land, it starts disappearing. You have to run along the entire sphere, hitting each platform to cause it to disappear (and collect the coins I think?).

I always ended up doing it incorrectly, leaving Mario with large gaps between platforms. Or I'd just straight up fall. There's a pattern to clearing the whole sphere I just couldn't figure it out. I'll do it one day!

Oh man, that second star in Piranha Creeper Creek After Dark. That's some Luigi purple coin stuff right there.

Edit: One thing I've really appreciated about this game is how finely-tuned it is for all of its characters. Every level is beatable as every character, but certain levels and challenges are a heck of a lot harder or easier depending on which characters you choose.

Take this one I mentioned: Piranha Creeper Creek After Dark. The main challenge in the level is the second green star which requires you to:

Spoiler:

Light torches scattered around a poison river while navigating across spinning and moving platforms and dodging those big piranha creepers that you have to hit to make retract. So the challenge is to not only make it across the platforms but to light the torches and keep from taking any damage so that you don't lose your fire flower power-up.

It's maddeningly difficult. I dumped a dozen or so lives into it before deciding to switch characters. And wouldn't you know, switching from Rosalina to Peach made it much easier to accomplish.

Meanwhile, there have been other levels where it was a lot easier to have Toad's speed or Rosalina's built-in attack or Luigi's height or Mario's lack of special abilities. It's that last one that I find interesting: that sometimes it's better to have nothing at all than to have something extra.

I'm just really impressed with this game's design.

Final world! \o/

We just got that star tonight. That was irritating but not nearly as bad as Mushroom-7's first half.

I've been switching back and forth between Toad and Peach for most of the game, while Demyx has been using mostly Rosalina and was playing as Peach predeominantly until we unlocked Rosalina. Haven't really needed Mario much and Luigi has made an appearance a couple of times.

I take this back. Once you unlock the final (for reals this time) world the game adds an indicator for which characters have beaten each level. So that makes this a lot less irritating in my mind. Probably not something I'm going to want to do right after we clear the final world though.

As Rosalina, I tend to avoid fire flowers because you lose your spin, which completely throws off my jumping. Peach is a better choice there because she can still float.

Rosalina is the best at killing enemies in general though.

Oh, man, World Crown...

Spoiler:

It's a small world, but the Captain Toad level is devilish, and the thirty star Mystery Box run is insane. I haven't even touched the final level yet.

I love playing as Rosalina. I don't like that her double jump is lost if you get a power-up, but she's such a versatile character that I almost always choose her.

I've been playing as Rosalina nonstop since unlocking her because I love the character and the spin is super useful. I also play as Rosalina in Mario Kart Wii (and probably will in Smash Bros. now too :p )

Okay, so I tried loading up the manual last night to figure this out, but loading the manual froze my WiiU.

...how the heck do I use these stamps I'm collecting?

Post on Miiverse. You can either open the home menu and pick the Miiverse icon to go to the community, or you can hit the Post icon that pops up at the end of levels or on the world maps. You need to use a handwritten note to use stamps; it's the icon to the left of the different pen sizes. (You can also grab screenshots if you're posting to the community. Use the icon that looks like a mountain with a plus over it on the far right, then pick your top or bottom screen.)

Huh. Okay, I thought that's what I was doing. I'll have to double check when I get home.

POSTS FULL OF COINS INCOMING!

Also, because I like bragging:

When does it start showing which character(s) you beat it with?

When you unlock World Crown. So, after you've collected all the green stars, flags, and stamps in the main game and bonus worlds.

Ah, cool. Just got to the Bowser world last night. Can't wait to actually have time to dedicate to this game again.

It took me three hours to finish one of the levels in World Crown.

Spoiler:

Mystery Box Marathon.

I have one more and then I'm done unless I decide to go after those last five stamps. I just might do it if only to have all five shiny stars on my profile.

Speaking of which, here's a good breakdown of what you need for the five profile stars. It has spoilers to the extent that a Mario platformer can have spoilers.

O.o World Star is hard enough for me.

At the end of World Star plus I have everything save 1 star and 1 stamp through World 5. Not particularly impressive but this is more post-game content / completion than I ever do. Wonderful game.
