Super Mario 3d World catch all

A couple neat things we discovered tonight:

1) Tanooki Suit makes the slot machine house a guaranteed 2UP. I'll leave the exact method as an exercise to the reader

2) Iif you are carrying a teammate when you reach the mid-level checkpoint flag, you both gain the instant-Super Mushroom effect!

So if you're her friend, check out the spoilered Mario 3D World post from a couple days back.

I tried to find it but it wasn't appearing in my Activity Feed. Also, I'm absolutely terrible about checking Miiverse :(

Man, #2 makes me wish they had Online MP for this.

I loved the baseball puzzles!

I finally made it to the final world! I've taken my time to nab all 204 green stars and 56 stamps up to that point. I can't wait to see what this last world holds.

Pure unadulterated joy. Congrats!

Yeah that level was rough. Took us probably the same number of lives too!

I had my first game over last night and pulled a rage quit. I don't remember the name of the level, it's the one where you have to jump repeatedly in order to stay on top of large rotating blocks. Went through 22 lives. Ugh. 7th world I think?

edit: Of course I finished it in three tries during my lunch break.

Is that the one with the killer purple goop and the rising platforms with the arrows on them?

No, it's called Grumblump Inferno. World Bowser-7.

Gotcha. I haven't gotten to that one yet, but there's been a lot of nasty comments about it on Miiverse.

It seriously makes the Poochy bonus level in Yoshi's Island look like a relaxing time.

I just beat it. It wasn't too bad unless you went for all the stars and stamp, which made it harder. I have a ghost for that level, so maybe one of you will get to race it. (Sadly, the ghost isn't for all the collectibles. It was the run I went back to get the gold flag.)

Spoiler:

The trick is to calmly walk over the edge of the blocks as they roll. Jumping or running will make you go too far over the edge.

Never not running.

In every level except Grumblump Inferno. I suspect it was intentionally designed to catch people who are always running (like me and you and all the rest of us Mario veterans).

I only stop running to spin.

Because I'm so humble:

Almost to the end! I have just a couple more areas in that world to complete, plus the final castle; I have all the stars and stamps to this point, and they have been a blast to find and catch.

Well, the credits are rolling. But...

Spoiler:

I see on a FAQ that there are four more *worlds*. It's like when you go to a concert and they act like the shows over before they play their three biggest hits. Everyone knows what's going on, why bother?

Anyway, that last level in world Bowser was something else. It was like they'd been holding all their weird Japanese-ness in and let it all out at once.

Thanks for the tip on that level Clocky, we had a much easier time heading back for the stars we missed.

Idle Thumbs had a good point a couple weeks ago:

Spoiler:

The early credit roll is their way of saying the game is just starting

Yup, it's tradition. Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1-2, 3D Land... I'm here for that challenge.

It goes back further than that. World's Star and Special Worlds

Look at that last boss fight:

Spoiler:

A final boss in a platforming game that's a platform challenge! Bless them. They did the same thing in 3D Land.

I loved the double cherry cat Bowser.

Grabbed all the stars and stamps through the normal game. 243 stars, 66 stamps, and 136 lives lost. Loved every minute of it.

Onward!

I dived in head first after the credits. No regrets. 3d World is just as amazing as 3D Land.

Which games? It's been a long time.

I'd dive right back in if it weren't bed time. Tomorrow is only a day away.

Tomorrow is Saturday, yo! Tonight is WEEGI TIME!

I think New Super Mario Wii is the one that started this trend.

Congrats!

Super Mario World I think started that although you could access the bonus worlds (Star and Special) without beating the game first. Yoshi's Island I think was the first game to incentivize finding all the collectables in the level. Although that distinction might go to Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land because you need to find ALL the hidden treasures if you want the best ending.

EDIT: According to this Eurogamer retrospective there were 4 more worlds in Super Mario Bros. 2 (aka The Lost Levels) but you could only access them after beating the game 8 times! I think they dropped that requirement in the All-Stars version.

Hmm. Truth told, I'm not as big a Mario guy as many of you seem to be, and I'm thinking I might stop for now. I'm to the end of the first special world, and 24 stars short. I don't like replaying levels much, so I might call this one finished and chip away at it over time.

I love a challenge, but the way they set this up isn't really in line with what I look for in these games. I like reflex tests and break-neck pacing, not poking around every corner and jumping off the top of every tree. It's odd. I prefer the gameplay of 3D Mario games, but the progression of the NES games.

That's entirely fair. I was in a similar mindset until Demyx and I played NSMB U together and we worked together on getting all the coins. Also, I think she shamed me over not getting to see most of the levels in Galaxy 1 because I stopped playing after I beat the game.

That's one of the things I like about Mario... it scratches many different itches between the platforming and the exploration for all the secrets. My only disappointment with this game is that there's no alternate exits.

I'm teaching my daughter to play this one. She's noodled about on Mario and Kirby games before, but she's old enough to start figuring out her own controller.

My progress has been really slow, though. I am in the "last" world, but haven't done much of it.

I actually raged quit SMG 1 because there was one challenge I could not complete no matter how much I tried. I need to go back and master SMG 1 & 2 one day.

My son did not get the memo that Saturday morning is for sleeping in.
