Battlefield 4 - Catch-All (It's ALIVE)

Here is a benchmark article that compares BF4 performance on W7 vs. W8.1. Here is the juicy bit from the conclusion:

Operating Systems – results clearly show that the game runs much better on Windows 8.1 than on Windows 7. When releasing Windows 8′s vanilla version, Microsoft announced better performance with multicore CPU’s, especially with AMD’s FX CPUs. What Microsoft said, Microsoft delivered. It is perfectly fine that new operating system brings better performance but we do not know why there is so much stuttering with Windows 7 OS. When we say stuttering we are not referring to frame drops or even Frametiming, we tested all that and it brought us nothing. We believe that Framerating techniques would show what the users and we as well have experienced, however at the time of testing we didn’t have adequate equipment to prove these claims but you can be sure that this is something we are going to be dealing with in the future. Battlefield 3 runs perfectly well with W7 without even a hint of stutter and we really do not understand why this happens in Battlefield 4. Unless, someone has found a way to show his new OS as a much superior one to the previous, and in order for them to do that, found a way for the older one to fail. We are not pointing any fingers, just saying. At this point , since there is not even a hint of a patch that would improve performance on W7 (DICE is being awfully quiet about that), if you are planning on upgrading your computer for Battlefield 4 the first thing you should change is your operating system and switch to Windows 8.1 (64-bit). /

Interesting read. I will say that for me BF4 runs more smoothly on low settings than BF3 did on low settings on my M11x R3 running Win 8.1

I am terrible:

Great now we have stats here too.

I can only attempt to (and fail) at whoring so many stats

top 10...i'll take it...

I need to get on vent one of these nights and play with you guys, i play with a few friends so I generally just sit on mumble in my squad.

I think the guy that went 44-0 wasn't cheating, he was just on the team that was stronger, rolling around in a tank and repairing it every time I almost would blow it up. He was also good at switching to his guns and fighting up close, and never engaging our team out of position. Whenever I ran into him I never felt cheated, just outplayed.

I do have a small request though, can we up the tickets on Rush? I don't want the Rush games to last forever, as they can be frustrating, but 50 tickets sometimes makes for a 4 minute game that hardly seems worth the time to load in. And some of the maps if you get a defending tank in your spawn and your team doesn't react to it well you lose half of your tickets before you even get to do anything.

I understand people don't like the meat grinder feel of it sometimes, but I'd prefer to not play rush at all than to have to play it that way.

Currently, no. The current server tool does not allow different ticket settings per map. Hopefully this will be sorted out in the near future.

Good to have some better perspective. I personally never even saw the guy and had no idea what he was actually doing or how he got that score. Was just something I saw pop up in text chat a time or two while I was fiddling with stuff before deploying again.

Am I the only person that likes Obliteration?

I like it. But I don't like it at 50 players. And I think it needs a 30 minute time limit in case of stalemates.

This. If the player count were changed to around 32 then I'd be all for it, but 50 players is a bit much. Can you specify which game modes are available on which maps?

Yes you can specify game mode/map in the rotation, but the player count/tickets/round time are all static. I am in the process of setting up the Procon server manager tool which should allow more granular control. Moto has a wrestling meet tonight so I won't have time to look at it until tomorrow or Thursday.

I suggest that once the tools allow for it, the server be run in adaptive settings, where it only throws some game types if the population is within a certain range. So maybe small conquest, domination, rush, and obliteration are all in the 32 player range, but once the population goes up, it goes large conquest. Maybe even put in a lower player count setting of Defuse/TDM.

I think BF3 server tools allowed for this, so I assume something will work eventually, even if it doesn't now.

Regarding the netcode... yeah it's super inconsistent.

This is what makes me think it isn't actually the networking code, but rather an issue with the server itself. I've been on servers where everything was crackerjack, crisp and clean. I've been on other servers where I am constantly being shot by people who aren't there and being hit by missiles before I get the launch warning. It usually correlates with or devolves into rubber-banding, and then eventually devolves into a server crash.

I think what's happening is that server starts to fall behind realtime. This *could* be the networking code, but if the network code was bad it should be consistent - and it isn't. As the server falls behind, it is still processing and prioritizing shots and hits from the clients, but the location of the target is behind realtime - that's how you get shot behind cover or by someone you can't see. One might argue that what should happen is that everything slows down, ala EVE, but I don't think it's across-the-board enough to make that happen, until it gets so bad the rubber-banding starts.

Got a free battlepack code from Amazon for pre-ordering BF4 via the PS4 bundle. Guess they don't care that I still have time to cancel that order.

Yeah, I didn't see this guy in particular, but I was the gunner in a tank for another fella on a different server and we went almost the whole match without dying (I died once, repairing him). He ended up at 43-1, and I was 14-1.

Hmm, haven't got mine yet... and I got the game already ages ago.

I got mine back in August on my preorder.

Also of note is that it seems the engine is limited to 4 cores/threads, so that i7's run at 45-50% CPU usage. So i5's still good here, unlike what was reported earlier. That may be something they work on for optimizations later.

I'm so bad at everything with the bolt action weapons.

That is all.

Run around in the test range shooting the targets for a bit. That's what I did to get the feel/timing down, then I felt a bit more comfortable.

Oh really? Crap. This is the second time amazon have screwed me with pre-order codes. Still, last time my complaining scored me $20 in credit. Lets see how much I can get this time

So. I used my 100% XP boost on this post, so it was like I posted twice. Thanks Battle Pack!

So that was when you pre-ordered? I received nothing. Nothing at all.
