Star Trek Online Catch-All

Ok queues for a game that is in "headstart" doesnt bode well. I am loving and am glad I lifetimed, but me thinks the first month is going to be a bag of a$$. Figured out how to mail items so that was good - I got your email Shoal. My Borg option showed up last night. I have played the first level through LT6 about 10 times now :). I like it - the graphics and the sounds were enough to wrap me in, but the actual space combat is done really well. The ground combat is stinkers with the lag, but the tactical command of an away team has promise. I cant wait to unlock better ships and I am hoping for a random mission generator for space combat at some point - beyond the story line.

In a queue. Hopefully this isn't a "typical" problem. Yesterday, I was able to play for awhile with very little lag, and easy login(s). Today, I try getting in and I'm in a queue...

I'm looking forward to checking out the C-store and see if I've got anything in there. I have yet to find my Chromodynamic Armor, as a reward from Steam. Maybe it'll show up on February 2nd?

Yeah, all of your pre-order items will appear once the game officially launches on the 2nd.

Ok, I gald the game is starting off with people wanting to play. However, this "Q" thing better not last like Aions was...

Just made it in. The Queue said I was #257, and then I was just "in"...

How do we get into the fleet? Who's in charge and whom do we need to contact for our invite?

Just a reminder--if you haven't updated your graphics drivers (can't believe I let myself get behind), at least for Nvidia, it made a huge difference for me in ground combat lag.

I just let the queue run while I played something else, finally got in, played for about 10 minutes and then it disconnected while loading a ground mission. Try to log back in? Back of the queue again. Ridiculous.

Anyway, rather than harp on the bugs... any tips some of you want to share? I'm still in my starter ship and I'm running a MkII phaser w/ MkII quantum torpedo launcher up front and a MkII quantum mine launcher in the rear. Loving it. Had never used mines in the beta. I just keeps the mines on autofire and with their seeking ability I can basically hit a ship directly in front of me with all of my weapons. And the damage they do? I've blown up birds of prey that I wasn't even aiming at just because they fly into an area where 3 or 4 clusters of mines have been sitting around.

I shouldn't have, but I jumped into STO - and very glad I did! Loving the space combat, and the moon ping hasn't been too bad.

Has anyone found a good source of info about things like what skills different professions get and so on? The manual on the website is a bit sparse. Based on the little I've read I'm leaning towards going for a Tac officer in a science ship, but I want to work out how feasible that is.

I finally got in, and now the servers are going down for 1.5 hrs (5:45 pm CST, for those keeping track). Grrrrrr... Hopefully they're fixing this queue shenanigans...

I'm still in the starter ship and have disruptors equipped, but sadly, no rear torpedo launchers. I'd be all about that, but I don't have one yet! Either way, it sounds like you've got a pretty good set-up going, but in the beta, I never made it past the starter ship, either. Plenty of folks with good advice on the GWJ forums, however, as compared with the STO forums!

I've yet to see a complete list of skills and abilities. Here's what I've got bookmarked so far:

Thanks, will check those out.

Edit: Incidentally, I had not trouble logging in last night, although I would've been on about 4am PST (I think). Lots of the comments in the chat were in german, which I wasn't expecting - consequence of a single server, I guess!

Well, I made it to level 10... now I need one more for the next level ship.. sigh. Will have to do that tomorrow.

As to those talking about weapons setup for the frigate, you can't go wrong if you keep a similar set up as what's initially given, though I've done these two:

Beta:
Dual dual phasers, photon torps front, mines in the rear. I was an engineer with everything specced for survivability. I'd basically run in, slow to a crawl, evasive maneuver and continally rebuff my shield with defensive setup on. Worked like a charm.

Current:

Dual disruptor cannons, photon torps front, phaser MkII in the rear. I like this setup because I'm heavy bridge specced for extra power to weapons and combined with my tac ability of alpha maneuver I can pull down a cruiser on approach and frigates have no chance. I like the rear phaser for the simple fact that it'll absolutely ruin any fighters that find their way to my sensitive rear quickly. Mines would work too, but I'm careful about flying in now. Dual disrputors on the front are just nasty for me since I have +7.5 to disruptors on my ship console and when I alpha maneuver and power to weapons, I end up hitting for 600-700 points on hull per volley and the damn thing fires two volleys ever go around. That's as hard as a torpedo. Its sexy to say the least, the only downside is that it's a small firing arc. Hence why I always creep in at almost no impulse (I don't stop because then I can't turn) when I'm heading up against another vessel. Opening with those and the tachyon beam while loading high yield torps and waiting for the beautiful voice of my computer to say 'shields down on target' will just punish the other ship.

What I like about the game is that both ships I've run have played way differently. For those new, be sure to keep an eye on your power allocation on the bottom middle. Max impulse into a battle and you're weapons/shields/aux won't be charged at all, leaving you gimpy for the first half minute of battle while that energy gets reallocated. I really like to move in to about 12-11 km and then coast in, allowing everything to balance where I want so that I can strike hard from the get go.

Oh, and turn ability is everything. There are engines that allow for additional turning and there is a console (engineering, I think) that will provide additional turning ability. Mucho necessary if you're going to go cruiser, but really important for almost anyone that is PvPing against the agile Klingons and their Birds of Prey that turn so fast, all of the Klingons inside are stuck to their outer hull.

Yeah seriously. I've done a fair bit of PVP and the only thing spinning faster than those Birds of Prey is Gene Roddenberry in his grave.

Watch them hit evasive manoeuvres and the bird will whirl around like a top.

Ya, BoP can just run circles around me...

Stupid Question: Where is Starbase 01? I want to attend my graduation to LT Commander.

The ceremonies are at the Sol Starbase in the same place you met the Vulcan ambassador in an early mission. I think.

How do I join the fleet? I need to be around some filthy enablers responsible adults when playing this game so I don't fail out of law school.

I'll second that. Simply changing out the weapons in your ship can completely change the way you approach battles. Last night I swapped out my MkII phasers for MkII disruptors. It takes me slightly longer to get through shields now but once those shields are down almost any ship I'm up against is going to go down quick. I'm at Lt6 and my quantum torpedoes are hitting unshielded ships for 1700+ and the mines are hitting for 400+ a piece. Mind you it launches 5(?) mines per shot and sometimes I'll have a cluster of 20 mines out there that I'll try to lead enemies into.

One thing I've wondered about, sometimes just the bleedover from my attacks have gotten enemy hulls down to 0% but they're still flying around and attacking. Do I have to bring their shields down before they finally blow? I haven't noticed what it is that finally makes them pop.

What are your preferences on shields? I've tried the 5% absorb/5% bleed through shields and I've also tried the increased regen shields. While the reduced bleed through was nice I felt like my shields were constantly on the verge of dropping and I was continually having to reroute power. Mind you, my hull was almost always at 100% but once those shields are down the hull seems to drop faster than I can blink. With the regen shields I've tanked large groups in the sector skirmishes while other ships in the same situation have been popping like firecrackers. Sure, all the shields may be down in the red but as long as I keep spinning and refreshing my engineering officers shield boost ability I've made it. I've only blown once so far and I'm pretty certain it was because I lost focus on my shields for a second while trying to time a torpedo shot to an enemies shields dropping.

Thanks, I figured that's what/where it was, but the fact they state Starbase 01 and not Sol System Stardock threw me off.

I just got an Escort Class ship when I leveled, and I can't wait to try it out some (I got it right before I logged last night). I am rocking the Phaser/Torp/Heavy Dual disruptor up front, and will be picking up a Mine Launcher for the rear. I like the Dual Heavy Disruptors, they seem to eat through shields and still do great damage to hull's. I haven't tried the mine launchers yet but on my Escort I have two Engineering consoles that give me +5.6 to that (I hope that bonus stacks).

My preference on shields is fast regen, I like to sit and spin while firing at targets, I only maneuver if there are several big guys focused on me.

Is there a good way to guarantee a lot of Ground Missions? I love taking in my away team and beating up on Klingons and Bandits, but so far I keep doing space missions when exploring.

Go to the social window, and do a search for fleet "Captains with Jobs".

Send a tell to anyone you find, and they'll direct you to whoever can do invites.

The story line the Admiral gives you is ground mission heavy. Very.

Spoiler:

The one with the Klingons doing something with genetics.

Anyone have any Quantum torps for sale/trade? I would prefer MkIII or MkIV ideally, but even MkII would be good to try out. I find with a Cruiser I broadside more and torp less, so the slower recharge higher dmg Quantums might be a good switch.

I think Starbase 39 sells mk3 and mk4 items, not sure about quantums in particular though.

Where is 39? I haven't seen Quants for sale anywhere yet.

Anyone having any luck selling on the exchange?

I threw a couple of items up on it, but I have no idea where the mailbox is(either in the game world, or UI), so.... yeah...

Sierra sector. This map actually lists it as Starbase 34, but I'm reasonably sure it's 39...

Drop down arrow by your top right mini map.

So I know someone here mentioned going to DS9 for a Bat'leth, but all I can find there are MK5+ weapons. Is there anywhere (not on the overpriced exchange) where I can get LtComm melee weapons?

Blargle, I think I need to restart my character. Given that I've dropped maybe 4 hours total so far, I don't really have a problem with it at this point.
