Star Trek Online Catch-All

The original post below is quite dated, so here's some more relevant, up-to-date information.

The Captains with Jobs fleet is still going strong, with a very active leadership that has been recruiting regularly. Contact T'Uvia or Boudicca@blacksheepers in-game to learn more and join up.

For general game information, you really can't beat this STO wiki.

STOAcademy has a decent skill / ship load out planner

I try to keep an eye on this thread, so please feel free to suggest any other info you feel should be up top in the OP.

Original post:

Here's a new thread for the post-release game.

GWJ has a fleet (aka guild) in STO, called "Captains with Jobs". It is headed by the awesome Xeknos, but feel free to ask any questions related to the fleet here.

FYI, Captains with Jobs will be the name of the Federation fleet. A Klingon fleet is still in the works.

Captains with Jobs roster spreadsheet: We're keeping information up-to-date as best we can here, however this is a person-by-person effort; the spreadsheet is publicly editable, so please make sure to add your information if you plan on joining our fleet. And if you plan on leaving, let us know and go ahead and take your info off, so we can keep an accurate headcount.

GWJ Ventrilo: GWJ has a ventrilo sever, and there's a channel exclusively for STO, so if you're in game, go ahead and jump in Vent.

Here's some useful links to STO related information:
Read this before you play. It's basically an intro-manual, but actually worthwhile (as opposed to the one Cryptic has up).
Brilliant explanation of how to best use your skill-points (long article, but worth the read)
This guy keeps writing great stuff, so here's a link to the blog - worth checking in regularly to see what new stats he's uncovered.
Starchart, with a list of in which sector each system can be found.
Chart of the ships, with loadout/crew/console info (this may be outdated)
Skill builder

There's a great thread on the official forums looking at different energy weapon loadouts for cruisers. LOTS of good info there but the main point is that the DPS scaling of additional weapons suffers from diminishing returns because of energy drain, to the point where you can actually hurt your DPS by adding a weapon if you don't have the energy to support it.

Loadouts Optimized for frontal

Loadouts Optimized for broadside

Loadouts Optimized for all arcs

If there's any crucial/useful information I've left off this post, please let me know and I'll put it in here.

Spockified intro movie:

I'm wondering how Steam will update my "Star Trek Online - Beta" client to the real client? Or will it just be the same application?

It is just a change on the name - the client will update through the launcher...

Ugh. like 2 paragraphs in and they used "compelling". I don't know why but it also feels off putting to me that they had to make a point of saying the new content will be free.

Afaik all of the updating is done through the game launcher. Steam only handles the initial download. And yes, the beta client will patch itself to retail automatically.

Are we voting for our Klingon Guild name yet? I think someone mentioned House of G'djer. Works for me.

I like this as well.

Do we have a server picked out yet? Have they even announced the server names?

It single shard just like EVE. So they have one server on the east coast.

I thought it was on the west coast?

Good to know, thanks. I haven't really been following the specifics of the release, but I did preorder the Digital Deluxe ver from Atari yesterday just to try it out. Can't wait till I'm off work tomorrow, MW2 you may have finally been replaced.

Can someone answer a question for me: If I go tactical, but want to use the Engineer skill for placing turrets and/or mortars, what kind of penalty will I be getting? If any?

If you are a tactical officer, you will have other abilities - you won't be able to do any of the engineer ground abilities (including placing turrets, etc.).

But I thought you could train in skills form the other classes, or does that only apply to space, or am I completed off base here? This why I come here for answers, I find their forums confusing.

There are some space and ground skill you get based off your class. There are 2 skill trees unique to each class, but these are only ground abilities.

I'll likely log on when the head start begins to set up the fleet, so if 4 other people are on we'll be rolling. After that, I probably won't really start playing until I get my pre-order bonuses, which I need to get the box to do.

Well, I won't be on until later that evening, hopefully we'll have 4 of us with a fleet already in place by then.

I wonder if, like Champions Online, STO will require you to purchase new space sectors individually.

From what I gather the physical servers are on the east coast. But the developers or whoever owns the programs that run on the servers live and work on the west coast. Supposedly thats why every time they announce a date or schedule server downtime they quote using PST instead of EST

The fact that you can't access pre-order bonus content until Feb. 2 is a downer. Seems like a bunch of people in the head start will be getting usless items in a few days. Really sucks if you wanted to be a Joined Trill.

Cryptic says it was to discourage people from pre-ordering just to get the bonuses, but I can devise a system in less than an hour that would eliminate that problem. Guess I'll be sticking to PvP for the next few days.

How much is high latency likely to affect gameplay? Since it's a US-based server I'll probably be looking at about 400-600ms lag. From the videos, the ground combat looks similar enough to WoW that I'm sure it'd be just as playable (i.e. slightly strange but easy enough to adapt to), but I'm less certain about the ship portions since positioning looks to be so important. Any thoughts?

Lag got pretty bad in spots during beta. That resulted in a lot of rubber banding. But it never made everything "slow". I'm not sure how it would handle for someone will a high ping all the time.

The lag in beta though was due to the server issues (and maybe a bit of client bugs). If it was ping related it was because the servers were too slow to respond. Ping lag caused by long distance or slow internet connections is a different ball of wax so the only way to know how bad it would be is for someone to try.

Star Trek Online head start patch now available

I should be on at launch to help with the fleet - at home today working on house - at least that is what my wife thinks...

I'm in. Is it true I won't be able to access my joined trill? Why does the pre-order stuff (especially stuff like Steam) no kick in right away?

There "theory" is they do not want people pre-ordering just to get the bonus stuff - which is true - I have done it. So this time they tied all pre-order bonus items to the retail key...

/boo

I'm ready for the head-start!

But, my Steam key I put in last night should be the retail key, correct?

Yes.

Yea but the meatspace guys like puny little Wallmart do not want to be at a disadvantage so they make sure the publishers link everything to the release date of the physical box. Not a big deal for most stuff other than the Trill. Rest will just get added to any existing character.

If we're basing this info off of the FAQ, then it seems there are two scenarios. Best I can tell:

-If you have a pre-order key you will not get "retailer bonus items" until you enter your retail key, from the box, on 2 feb.
-If you digitally bought the game you have 1 key, the retail key, so you should have entered the retail key and you should automatically unlock the retailer bonus items.

We shall see at 1pm EST. I won't be on quite that soon but I'm sure there's other Steam purchasers here.

I'm planning to hop on at 11 AM MST, when things go live. I'll create a GWJ chat channel in game, just like before, and once we get 4 other people on, we'll get Captains With Jobs started for real.

I'll do my best to be there when it starts to. Assuming we can all get on. Still have to decide on a character name, though.

Actually, now that you mention it. The Steam key might just be a pre-order key. We might be getting another one once the game ships.
