Video Game Deals Catch-All

Specifically *not* a video game deal but this is probably the best place to put it. Amazon is giving $8.62 off (almost) any $50 or more order today. It excludes video games, digital content and Amazon gift cards. But hey, they sell a lot of other stuff too.

Thanks! Just saved some money on a gift card.

I wondered the same thing. I don't *need* one, but it seems like it would be useful to have at some point.

The Steam Link is a super great option. Just try and run it wired if possible, and be prepared for some jank. Some games stream better than others, and finding support for getting individual games working is spotty at best. Still, I've found it to be well worth the $50 I paid, let alone $20.

Just a heads up: $50 worth of whatever you buy has to be sold by Amazon itself to qualify

I would point out though, that $50 worth of Steam or Nintendo eShop gift cards DO qualify. I just loaded up on Nintendo cred for when the Switch arrives.

Edit: sorry, steam doesn't work. but eShop cards do!

Oh my, that's a good tip! I'm gonna scoop some of those up.

The $50 Steam Gift Card isn't allowing the "BIGTHANKS" promo code. It's the only thing in my cart.

"The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase."

Did you buy an Steam one or just Nintento?

If anyone gets the Steam one to work, provide a link to the item on Amazon, please.

I just bought Nintendo, but a co-worker was getting steam cards... but he just told me he hadn't tried yet. So I guess probably a no-go there. Sorry.

Video games are not a part of the BIGTHANKS promotion.

It says so in the fine print, but it doesn't say no board games.

I just got a grocery store gift card. Basically a free $9.

FOOD!

This gnome is wise.

They might have hot fixed it because I can't get it to work on eShop cards either.

Sadness... I guess I got in early enough...

Case and point, the promotion finally convinced me to buy a copy of The Doom That Came to Atlantic City this morning .

Yep. Finally got around to nabbing a copy of Pandemic Legacy... and a DaYan speed cube to put me over the $50 threshold.

Amazon must hate me. I've been waiting to pick up Pandemic Legacy so just added it to my then empty cart and it will not allow me to use the code. Same as with the Steam card, which isn't in my cart anymore. The only thing in there is the Pandemic Legacy game.

I'm going to log out and back in to see if it still thinks I have something unallowed in there.

I switched browsers, it's still the only thing in my cart, and it won't allow me to use the "BIGTHANKS" code. Am I using an incorrect code?

Is Amazon the seller? Is your cart total over $50?

Soooooo, you're saying I need to actually follow instructions? Crazy, man. Just plain CRAZY!

This is probably the issue. Amazon doesn't typically sell hobby boardgames directly.

Make sure the seller is Amazon itself and not just something fulfilled by amazon..

The game was Amazon, it just wasn't $50+. So I added Carcassonne: South Seas and all was well.

Thanks for the reading comprehension help.

Always happy to help a seasoned citizen!

Thanks for posting this! We needed to resupply on whey protein and $8.62 cheaper is always appreciated.

In for the $1 level for a Steam copy of Civ IV.

For someone looking to finally get back into civilization since playing the original waaay back, which is friendlier and a bit less hard core, iv or v?

Thanks,

I personally feel that Civ IV is the pinnacle of the series. (I haven't played VI yet.) I play it on low-to-medium difficulty, have fun, and work to bring the world under the sway of my iron fist benevolent guidance. The game always felt approachable, natural, and utterly compelling. In contrast, I felt Civ V had an unwelcome layer of Panzer General (?) on top of it that felt like it was fighting me. It has some nice improvements, but it felt very different from the Civ games of yore.

Civ IV Complete for $1 might just represent the highest playtime-to-price ratio of any purchased game.

Personally, I preferred Civ IV. It seemed like an evolution of the original Civ mechanics into an accessible, modern perspective with solid AI and high quality DLC that changed things up. For $1, that's a TREMENDOUS amount of strategy gaming.

Civ V seemed too experimental, and the systems didn't quite gel together for me. It's a bit prettier but seems more of a puzzle to figure out what's going on mechanically at times.

I still play Civ4 and went back to it after about 30 hour of Civ5 but I would say I think V is probably a little friendlier. The interface is better and tends to prompt you more.

However, the one-unit-per tile in Civ5 makes things more fiddly. Stacks of doom suck but the extra work in unit movement in five wasn't fun for me. Oddly enough, the music and sound in Civ4 was another big reason in me going back to it.

But I would say you can't go wrong with either. Civ5 with expansions apparently got really good, it's just that fundamental one-unit-per-tile design decision means I'm not that interested in it.

Depends how seriously you want to get back into the series. If you're unsure (and haven't played since the original *!*) then go with the cheapest option possible. If you find that suddenly your entire life shifts to working around your new Civ addiction, then there are frequent sales on Civ5, and no doubt Civ6 will continue to drop in price.

I haven't put a whole lot of time into 6, yet, but I think it refines and expands on the changes 5 made. 4 still is the top of the pile for me, but 6 may get there once I get more time in it, whereas 5 seems a bit like a half-way house.

Thanks everyone.
I played the Civ 5 demo a bit before work and I was almost late to work. Uh oh. I recall that "one more turn" mentality.
I completed mayb 20 or 25 turns and not a whole lot going on. Built an archer and settler. Made a couple of farms. Killed some barbarians. Explored a bit. Not much development / building because I didn't have the tech. Am I doing something wrong or is it a slow build to getting things moving?
It's a tough decision to
For $8 and now being a forty-something year old I will probably spring for both 4 and 5.

Thanks!

Chad

I'll go against the grain and say that I enjoy Civ V more than IV.

It just feels friendlier to play, both visually & mechanically. And while IV ultimately has the most depth, I'd argue that the two major expansions for V (Gods & Kings, Brave New World) made those differences pretty negligible.
