Sims 3 deals:

The newest Sims 3 world, Midnight Hollow, was just released. The gold version with extra decor, stuff, and an extra building is 25% off until 7 Oct. There's also a bundle deal that gets you some dumb Midnight Hollow themed clothes, but a good quantity of simpoints.

Amazon still has some Sims 3 stuff on sale for 25-50% off:

Sims 3 Starter Pack (base game, Late Night and High End Loft Stuff) $19.77 (33% off)
Island Paradise (most recent expansion) $29.99 (25% off)
Supernatural expansion $14.99 (25% off)
Seasons expansion $29.21 (27% off)
Showtime expansion $9.98 (50% off)

Most of the Sims 3 worlds sold on Amazon are about $15, around 33% off

For reference, all but the most recent Sims 3 expansions typically go for 50% off during Steam sales.

Sine Mora is awesome btw. I highly suggest the purchase.

Yes indeed. Not only an incredible shmup but it's got a really crazy, pretty damn dark narrative too. I have it on PC, Vita/PS3 and 360 now.

Also, furries.

More Amazon PC / Steam deals this week... Is this a new initiative for them or something? I've been hoping the Lego Batman / LOTR bundle pops up again during the holiday sale so I can earn my Big Picture Steam Achievement but this looks interesting too. And what exactly is EU III:Chronicles? I've got EU III already on the pile of shame so I'm not sure I need to add IV to it as well...

Do those links put anything in Stan's tip jar?
Also, dangit Amazon, you got me. You even got me wondering about dipping my toe into Eve.

@Cod : those links doesn't add to the tip jar. You'll see a link with gamerswithjobs.com when they do.

Gotcha. Thought so, but didn't know if there was some cunning that I was unaware of. Thanks.

It's hard to pull off with some of the download links. They are not always normal, especially for bundles of games, like that LotR/Scribble bundle above.

I think you can still use the amazon search bar on the left to get the referral credit.

Guys, if y'all like fun, funny space games, you can get Zigfrak for $1.49 from ShinyLoot this weekend. Great game.

I'm a bit upset with 2K. Last year I pre-ordered NBA2K13. I installed it and realised you need to have the disc in the tray in order to play it. A month later they released the game on Steam which didn't require a disc in the tray to play.

So apparently Steam is having weekly sales now. Of note is Victoria 2 for $5, or the complete pack, including both expansions and a bunch of extra goodies for $10. I highly recommend the expansions, as they add a lot of refinement to the game.

It's my personal favorite of the Paradox Grand-Strategy Pantheon (Though I've yet to commit to the new EUIV), a definite must play if you're at all interested in the era of Imperialism, the Industrial revolution, the rise of Nationalism, The Empire on which the sun never sets, the formation of Germany and Italy, the scramble for Africa, and the American civil war. This game is the 19th century in a bottle.

Weekly sales have been going on for a while, though this may be the first time it's been on the front page. I'm somewhat interested in SpeedRunners and Hamilton's Great Adventure, a few of the others look pretty good, too.

Holy crap! That's a lot of gaming for very little monies. Vicky 2 is really really good with the expansions. I wish they would make a Vicky 3 with the new stuff they have from CK2 and EU4, that game would be incredible.

Is V2 impenetrable for noobs?

I understand that CK2 and EU4 made strides in easing the newcomer into the genre.

Do I need to take a class or anything to get V2? The whole scene is pretty new to me.

Unless the subject matter in Vicky is vastly more interesting to you I'd definitely stick with CK2 and EUIV until you feel comfortable in a Paradox game.

I'm also new to the scene but quite interested. Going to have to hold off for a while due to having too many games on the go, and many in the queue, but I do have access to CK2 and EU3 thanks to a recent Humble Bundle. When I get around to it, would you recommend starting off with one over the other?

Personally, I find EU 3 more approachable than CK2.

That's where I was leaning, but definitely open to either option. Kind of tough to commit many hours to 3, knowing 4 is already out there. Certainly curious as to which game is more approachable, and also which game is just better overall.

Zeno Clash UE is 99¢ (90% off) on XBLM this week, as part of the Activision publisher sale. While you're at it, ZC2 is $7.50 (50%).

Persona 4: Golden is $19.99 on PSN now - if you're the last holdout who doesn't have it, fix it, cheap

In continuing its newfound tradition of giving away old games almost everybody has, the free game of the half-month on XBL is Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. Granted, this is a phenomenally good game (I recently introduced my kids to it and they're obsessed with it), but yet another old one. If you don't have it, you should; it's one of the best XBLA games I've played.

Thanks for the advice. Have never played this game so I guess I'll add it to the pile.

I think what it comes down to is what is interesting to you. Medieval ruler simulator or Renaissance country simulator? CK2 is a more personal game since you play as a person and the most important thing in the game is your relationships with other people. EU3/4 is more grandiose in that you play as a country and so is larger in scope. Also, if you have a preference for one time period over the other, that will help drive your decision as well.

To be clear, neither game, despite improvements made to them, is especially easy to get into; EU4 is the high water mark for accessibility in a Paradox game but I can see how even that would be somewhat daunting to someone who has never played a Paradox game. There are a lot of interlocking systems you at least need to be aware of in both. On the other hand, if you are willing to experiment some, figuring out how the systems work together can be rewarding by itself.

Vicky 2 is a more difficult game to get into because it takes a lot of the ideas from the EU series and adds more systems on top of it. It is a fantastic game but has a pretty steep learning curve.

Personally, I like CK2 a little more than EU3/4 but I like the time period a little better and the narrative that arises out of the game can be unlike that found in any other game.

I'm still loving CK2, but I'm having a heck of a time getting into EU3. I've had it for a year or two and still can't get into it. Every few months I watch some LPs and try to get into it but it doesn't pull me back in like CK2. It must be the hook of the stories you create with your rulers as tboon pointed out. But I feel like i really SHOULD like EU3. And by the sounds of it I should stay away from Vic2.

So, yeah, I say start with CK2 as well and let us know what you think.

Silent Storm Gold Edition was just released on Steam and is 25% off ($7.49)!

If you dug the older X-Com games or turn-based tactical games in general, I HIGHLY recommend Silent Storm. The ending gets a bit outlandish but otherwise it is an amazing game.

I think the fun in the EU games is taking a nation-state from a relatively primitive state forward to a modern nation. The "storylines" are less personal and more, well, nationalistic in scope. But it is pretty fun to take a backward country to become a world power.

Vicky 2 is great because you can do the same thing as in EU but the toys are different. In EU3/4, the populations tend to be treated as uniform things (except when they decide to rebel). Sure, each province can have a different culture but generally this is used to add rebellious factions in a country. In Vicky 2, the population modelling goes much deeper. Not only are there cultural factions but socioeconomic factions as well. The poor want different things from the middle class who in turn want different things from the wealthy. This feeds into the economic model too, each class wants different things to meet their various needs. This creates a tension in what you can do. Add to that the march of industrialization as time flows by which changes the tensions as the game plays out. You want to modernize but are constrained by social (and economic) forces. You may want to be more liberal but entrenched interests don't. Or you may want to be very conservative but the masses want social reform. Juggling all that with the march of European imperialism happening at the same time is just wonderful. Great powers rise and fall. Socialism, communism, capitalism and monarchism all duke it out. Colonial crises flare into world wars. It is just great.

All this wonderful stuff does come at the price of some complexity though.

Apropos of nothing, my one-line summation of the various Paradox games:

CK2: Medieval ruler simulator
EU3/4: Guide a nation from medievalism to becoming a modern state.
Vicky 2: Guide a nation through the industrial revolution.
HOI3: Get ready for WWII, because WWII is coming.

All are great in their own way.

Awesome Paradox summation.

It still seems like CK2 is the easiest first step out of the bunch. 'Easiest' being a relative term, of course.

Thanks for the thoughts!
