[iphone] Opera Mini Rocks!!

Just downloaded it and it is FAST. I have an original 2g iPhone and browsing was basically useless to me with Safari. I could sit for minutes before pages loaded. Opera Mini has changed that - it is so nice to be able to actually browse.

It is free so I would also say everyone should give it a try! Now they just need an updated iPad version!!

Here is the link to the iTunes.

Doesn't seem to like GWJ though...

I was actually online last night refreshing the App Store and downloaded it essentially right when it came out. I also have a 2G iPhone on EDGE, so was really stoked to use it.

Long story short, it's faster but uglier. As noted above, GWJ is borked, and it also loads the MOBILE version of many sites automatically. The Yahoo! home page is especially messed up if you try to load it in "desktop" view.

I guess I'll stick with Safari unless I'm trying to load a particularly slow site.

haha.

"Hey you should try the new opera mini."

[5 minute pause]

"just got it and been using it for 15 seconds and I already like it 10x more than safari."

--e-mail conversation with wife just now.

So thanks again farley.

Not on iPhone, but Blackberry, Opera Mini is just a great browser. If is fast because it filters out a lot of junk code that the others actually process.

huh. I'll have to let my iphone friends (can I call them iPhonies? ;)) know about this. My wife was a huge fan of opera on her much maligned Blackberry, but hasn't switched from Safari on her iPhone.

Thanks for the heads up, farley.

I don't think it filters anything... It just renders the page at the Opera server level and sends that to the mobile device.

Some sites it really messes things up. Our site uses some html 5 on the home page and it renders it pretty well but doesn't seem to support the way we went about our slideshow gallery. It loads the first image and text but stops there. Safari renders it better but is much slower.

I've got an iPhone 2g and EDGE and I'll be using Opera on edge and wifi unless there are big problems with a page. Opera renders everything so much faster. Reading web pages on the iPhone can be a chore but Opera does a really nice job with scrolling and is ridiculously fast. Safari seems to be to much for the phone because even on wifi it's a bit slow. Opera mini might even get me to switch to Opera on my desktops.

Well, I've played around with it for a bit and I'm not impressed. The number one priority for me in a browser is to display pages as their intended to be displayed. Of all the sites I frequent, something like 90% have minor to severe formatting issues in Opera Mini. Those that format correctly seem to have font issues, like Opera is ignoring the font specified and forcing their own in some cases.

In addition, Opera is missing some key features I've come to depend on in Safari, like tapping the title bar to return to the top of the page. Gestures seem less accurate as well.

On top of that, it's not THAT much faster. The front page of GWJ loaded in 7 seconds in Opera (With low image quality specified) and 9 seconds in Safari on 3G. If I was on Edge it would probably be a bigger difference, but my 3G reception is pretty good around here.

I'll check it out again down the road, but for now I'll stick with Safari.

Serengeti, do you have a 3gs, 3g, or 2g? On my 2g it's significantly faster. The difference for me was 6 seconds for Opera Mini and 11 seconds for safari on wifi. Browsing through threads is much faster in Opera as well. I can scroll through long threads without Opera having to write the page if I scroll quickly. Safari always has to stop and render the page when I'm scrolling. Images take less time as well. I've got my image quality set on high in Opera. I do notice more issues with web pages when setting image quality to low. The GWJ site, for instance, looks relatively close with High IQ. The stories are arranged across the top and the page looks relatively the same. In Low IQ it is basically a single long column. In Low IQ the page loaded in a few seconds.

GWJ definitely doesn't render quite right in Opera but the speed difference is enough that I'll start with Opera and if it doesn't work THEN I'll use safari. I've seen the same on other pages.

The fact that i can type this message without lag is more than enough for opera mini to get a tick from me. I had given up on posting from my iphone with safari.

I have a 3GS, which probably explains the difference in experience.

That's over 20% haste! Think what that'll do for your internet dps!

I feel like the phone and safari are slow even on a wifi connection. It takes a fair amount of time to render the text and zoom. A 3gs is significantly faster and may not have the same restriction.
