Metroidvania 2D Action/RPG Catch-All

I thought Order of Ecclesia was the best of the bunch, though I didn't give Portrait a fair shake.

Order, doesn't matter as they're unrelated mostly. They're all good, Dawn of Sorrow is a sequel to Aria of Sorrow on the GBA(which is good, play it!), but Portrait has some STUPID moments where they give you 'important' items that you can sale and thus get the crap ending. So be wary.

If you're looking for a SoTN experience then it's Dawn all the way. But really they're all good.

Also that Axiom game looks so sweet, can't wait to play it.

+1 though I did give Portrait a fair shake. They're all fantastic Castlevania games. Dawn of Sorrow is the most similar to Symphony. Portrait has a well used dual protagonist mechanic. Ecclesia has the best diversity of weapons but is also shorter than any of the others on DS. It still wins out as my favorite because of the wide variety of abilities you get.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I went with Dawn of Sorrow, looks really good on the DSi XL screen. I was actually able to find a copy in nearly perfect condition at GameStop for 20 bucks.

Anyone play Xeodrifter on the 3DS? I saw it dropped recently for steam:

Seems like an interesting game. Some definitely Metroid homage going on in there.

You didn't want our opinion!

Definitely seems to fit this thread. Maybe once I'm done with Cave Story+ I'll pick it up on my 3DS.

Hollow Knight down to the last 3-4 days, and only ~$2500 to go!

I don't know if that counts any paypal donations/pre-orders made directly through their site.

I am on pins and nails hoping for this one!

Oh I'm going to play them all, just starting with Dawn of Sorrow. It's really good so far, definitely feels like SoTN. Once I finish it up I'm grabbing Portrait of Ruin, then Order of Ecclesia last.

Feel free to join me on PS3 if you ever make it to Harmony of Despair!

Appreciate the offer, but I don't have a PS3. Too bad though, would love to try it out.

To be fair, it has limited exploration opportunities (and even then require two people).
It's more for people who are good at gambling, which is to say, a high LCK stat in RL. (If the Random Number Generator God doesn't hold you in high esteem, you just ain't gonna get the shinies)

I wasn't aware of this, will definitely be picking it up next paycheck.

I wanted to pop in here and talk about the newest Strider game. Early going it looks pretty straight forward arcadey action game but the more you get into it the more it's clearly a Metroidvania title. I just got to the point where I got a new plasma type that I can switch between on the fly and it's required to open certain doors / kill certain enemies. Really enjoying it.

I like to view Strider as an action game with Metroidvania elements. I knew it had the Metroid style going in, and as such its more straight forward nature at the start disappointed me. By the end of the game I was having a blast, but not due to the exploration elements, though they certainly help keep the game from being a straight-forward linear affair. More because the combat gets really good.

Hollow Knight pledges really came through at the end!
"$58,893 AUD (including PayPal pledges)!"
Which means a Wii U version and a second playable character, whoo!

Yeah, that really went insane in the last 24 hrs.

Not complaining! We're getting a bunch of extra content!

Picked up Xeodrifter and it's pretty solid. Learning curve is a little high at first, mostly because of how unforgiving it is with saving. But after you start getting abilities it becomes pretty fun. I'm still early so we'll see if my opinion changes.

And I have now completed it as mentioned in a few places. It's short, like get to 6 bosses and defeat them to get new powers then finish up with the final boss kinda short. The gameplay is still solid and the challenge is pretty high, but if you can get through Super Metroid then this shouldn't be that bad either, biggest challenge is how little health you have and how saves are only an option before entering an area.

Ori and the Blind Forest came out this week, and is pretty darn good. Not sure if everyone would classify it as a Metroidvania, but it's certainly scratching that itch for me at the moment!

I'm playing Shantae and the Pirate's Curse on Wii U, it's also on 3DS. It's one of my favorite games in the genre, so far. Not quite as good as Shadow Complex or the better 2D Castlevanias, way better than Guacamelee and the worse 2D Castlevanias.

Huh, I thought that risky's revenge was kind of rubbish

So did I, something about the new one is sticking for me. I can't quite put my finger on it.

Pirate themed

I still don't get "the worse 2D Castlevanias"

I've played all the entries in the series that fall into this genre, and felt some were stronger than others. Order of Ecclesia, Harmony of Dissonance, and Dawn of Sorrow are much better than Circle of the Moon, Aria of Sorrow, and Portrait of Ruin, IMO. I like this version of Shantae better than the latter trio.

But you also like Shadow Complex. Ergo, your taste is suspect.
