World of Tanks: Catch All

There are also times you'll want to destroy someone's gun. HE is a must for that.

I can't think of a single time I'd rather shoot HE at the mantlet, than AP at a weakspot outside one tank in particular, which is a fairly exceptional case. Same goes for wrecking modules.

Often times I do this when all I can target is the gun of a tank hiding behind an obstruction. Or if I'm facing a fearsome tank that I have no chance of penning, no matter the weak spots. Like if I was a scout going against a well armoured heavy 4 tiers above me and have no chance of trying to flank him. The only hope in hell I have of surviving is to shoot out his gun, hoping for my reinforcements to get his attention before he flattens me.

Yea, at that point, best to go somewhere else, particularly if you're in a scout. Chances are, he hasn't seen you and doesn't know you there; shooting him in the face is liable to do nothing but let him know you are without a doubt.

There were times when he did know I was there, and retreat was not much of an option, with his gun in tact. Not saying this is a common use case, but it has happened to me. More than once.

I'll load HE for targets I'm sure I can't pen and can't flank, then aim for their gun, hoping for a module crit. Or when I can't be sure of penetrating and I need to track the target (say, when low tier and dodging around a building with a turretless TD chasing me, or trying to reliably track something big and nasty out in the open so my team can whittle it down). Or if I absolutely need to do just a handful of damage - had a tier VIII tank down to 34 health, and I wasn't going to survive if I didn't take him out with the first shot as I charged in after him, so I loaded HE. But 99 times out of 100, I won't be loading HE.

Took my first ride in my new Hetzer last night and it was BRUTAL. I think it's slower than my AT2. No other option other than going right up the middle and hope for the best. I'm guessing there's an engine upgrade that'll help me out. It can't come soon enough.

I'm going to disagree strongly; with very few exceptions, straight up the gut is never an option. Spend the 30 seconds prebattle looking at the map, at the tanks on your team and the enemy tanks. Then figure out where you can do the most good, and go there. Plan ahead and strategize, rather than just yoloing up the gut. Far less frustrating in the long run.

Hetzer is one of the earlier "derp" tanks. Eventually you'll get a MASSIVE caliber, short barrel gun that loads HE ammo by default. It has abysmal penetration, but huge HE damage. When you're the top dog in a match, you'll be one-shotting lesser mortals. When you're the bottom dog... well, just cry and go play something else. Or try to track things.

Yea, the Hetzer's kinda sad since they nerfed HEAT rounds into the dirt. Used to be you could take a 50/50 loadout with it and just wreck at any tier. Play the sneaky flanker from the bottom, pumping HEAT shells through big russian heavies, and blapping other tier 4s and lower with HE from the top. Still a good tank, but can't really be that brazen any more.

You're preaching to the choir. I never go up the middle. I inevitably end up in a position where 3-4 enemy tanks have a bead on me and I die quick. However, I don't think you truly appreciate how slow this tank was. It was stock, and I came up the light tank line so I'm not sure if that contributed to awfulness. Regardless, I've got a decent engine in there now and I'm back to running up the sides.

The derp gun was a blast, but I rarely get placed in matches where I'm top level. Most often going against 5's and 6's. The derp wasn't getting it done so I went back down a level with the gun.

And to the people who told me a bout HE ammo on open turret vehicles? Much thanks. Has paid instant dividends.

I've played the Hetzer, I know what it's like stock. You're actually in a slightly better spot coming from the 38t, since you should have at least one engine upgrade to chuck in it. Yes, it's rough, but all that means is extra planning. Keep in mind that nearly every tank in the game is garbage stock. As for using the 10.5cm gun, keep using it, but spend the extra credits on HEAT rounds. They're not as good as they used to be, but are still worth slinging at 5s and 6s.

Huh. I still get mileage out of HE when I'm low on the totem pole. It helps me damage tanks that just bounce my AP. And as noted, against anything open, it's fantastic.

So I'll burn HE first if I'm pretty sure I'm gonna die quick. Gives me a better record when I finally do go down.

Yea, the way I load out tanks, I'd get 4-5 shots out at most. The trick to playing as low tier is to play conservatively, look for the flank, and shoot weakspots. If you're comfortable modding, consider using a weak spot skin mod to help for a bit to get accustomed to it.

Also, if you're a lowest tier tank in the battle (as a Hetzer), using derp gun helps your score a lot, if you use it for tracking. Make sure to keep spamming "target" key on the guy you're constantly tracking, so that your team knows to whack them good. You track, they kill. You'd be amazed how much XP you can gain that way.

Thanks. I'll give the derp another shot tonight. I pretty much stick to the flanks, but I've found I have better success with the lower gun. I can pick away at them since I get pretty good penetration. Plus I can stay hidden. Firing that big gun causes instant detection for me.

I'll give the HEAT rounds a shot see if I like them better. I think they're only available for gold on the xbox, so that would nix that for the most part. Also no modding obviously. But when I get dominated by a tank more than once (AT 2) I'll take a look online to see where they're weak, and try to adjust.

Hmmm. That skin mod sounds like a good learning tool. But is there a website or something with weak spots for each vehicle?

That thing is a MONSTER! It HAS NO weakness. [cry] But it also has no gun either. I think they shoot toothpicks with a blow gun from the front of that thing. But if you shoot his cannon out, then basically you have a mobile rock on the battlefield. What you DO want to do to him, if close in, is track him then try to get behind him. But even then I've had mixed success damaging an AT2. [sigh]

Yeah that's my method for the most part. Though I have had moderate success on the side, (high and to the rear third) as well as the commander hatch if I have to take him head on.

Default is call in the artillery and let them have an easy, slow moving kill.

Emphasis mine; this could not be further from the truth. Giant-ass cupola is a huge weakspot; I live to crush AT2s who are foolish enough to not know about it and devour their tears.

2070 damage. 3 kills. Invader medal. Raider medal, which I didn't even know existed. And for all of that, only a 2nd Class Mastery for my FV304. Wow, what does it take to get an Ace Mastery badge here? Best I've gotten for this little tank is a 1st Class. There must be a lot of insanely good FV304 drivers out there.

It's been the stat padding arty of choice since the SU-26 got nerfed. In general, for most tanks you'll need ~1300 base xp(no premium or doubles counts), and in several tanks, the number's more like 1500 base XP.

I guess it's a April fools thing, but today at least you get this SPG called 'Karl' and play a lego type base 60's graphics game. It's a crack up. 'Karl' will be in your garage rdy to go. Have fun!;)

Yep, it's the april fool's joke from them. Perfectly balanced everything

Yep. Lego tanking. I got a 'Citizens Award' and could give my one crew a skill...lol.

I got the Peaceful Karl award... My team won but I didn't get any kills.

Their keeping Karl around till April 7th because of his popularity;)

Check the missions and events list, coming soon tab. Yet another mission you have to be in a platoon to complete (and one of the platoon has to be in a clan). I'm beginning to wonder if we should have a GWJ clan for the casuals like myself, so we can take advantage of these kinds of bonus missions. There wasn't any real good reason to set up a GWJer clan previously. I suspect WG will keep rolling them out.

So, since they were peddling the team matches so hard with missions this past weekend, I tried to give it a shot. What a complete load of bollocks. It was one of the most obtuse and incomprehensible UIs I've ever seen. No wonder they are having trouble getting people to use it.

WoT UI designer should be fired on the spot.
