World of Tanks: Catch All

I really enjoy it, I just haven't had a great deal of surplus time lately.

I'm not playing it anymore, I enjoyed it a lot, and I may return to it once I start getting busy again for it's easy 20 minute play chunks, but for now I've moved on to better things.

I feel like I should revive this because WoT has been a staple of my evenings for the past few months. This game, more than any other, killed my drive to play League of Legends :-O

I have a Tiger and the money maker tier 5s: the KV, Sherman M4, and my wonderful Panzer IV. I love my Tiger, but as anyone who has played this can tell you, half the games I play I am stuck fighting tanks I have no shot of killing 1 on 1. But when I am the top tier in the battle I feel like a monster The Panzer III has a crazy speed demon style that I really like too.

Since the last post here there are a bunch of new French tanks (they go faster when in reverse) and a replay system that seems to work like LoLReplay. It lets you see the perspective of the tank you are driving (even replays where you were looking if you like) and allows you to slow down and speed up time.

Hope there are some others that play. I know it can be a grind, and it is somewhat a pay to win, but I haven't hit the competitive point where that is noticeable. I imagine in the more competitive clan games it is more noticeable. It is also pretty sad that you have to pay to have more than one other friend in a platoon, but it still caps at three per platoon.

So is anyone playing this?

I approve of your Seattle-ish location, and hope that I can say the same here in the next year or so.

Loved hopping into this game a year, or so, ago. It was the bane of my studying time when I was working on my A+ last year. Having this pop up to the top on the forums here gives me a strong urge to start downloading again. I don't have the time for it right now, but would totally hop right back in if I did.

It was horribly addicting for me in that same map over and over kind of way. It brought me back to something like my early days of playing Day of Defeat, or BF42. It has more similarities to CS, but I was never a CS kind of guy.

It's definitely a fantastic game, one that I too put a good amount of time and money into last year. These days, I have a mile high pile and so much clamoring for time, it's hard to find some to dedicate to WoT. That said, I'm really looking forward to the WoWPlanes when it drops.

WoP should be anytime now right? That one i suspect will be fun and stay fun. WoT just got boring way too quick.

WoWPlanes is in Alpha right now last time I checked, I'd imagine we'll see it later this year or early next.

I've been playing a megaton of WoT over the last few months. Each day I just play a few games here and there, then go do something else and then come back to it for a while more. When a friend pointed out how many battles I've been in (>4000), I freaked, it adds up fast. All in all I think it's a great game.

I'm a tank collector, so I've got 50+ tanks in my garage. My best are the Tiger II and the M26 Pershing, other favs include the PzIII, IS, Marder II and the E8 for fun and $$$. Stick with that Tiger because the Tiger II is awesome and well worth the frustration of high pen/low dmg gun and weak armor (for your class/tier) you're living through now. I also fell in love with the French tree when it was released, the light tree gets good around the AMX 12t and the heavy picks up around the ARL 44, the grind to get there can be really frustrating, but it's great once you're there.

It looks like there will be a new patch soon and I'm looking forward to the changes in the U.S. TD line.

Very much looking forward to the next WoW... or WoWP or WoP or whatever it will be called.

I am juuust shy of 1500 battles. I love that I feel pretty accomplished after playing for half an hour or an hour; a lot of games spend that much time walking someplace. The ability to quit a battle after dying and jump in another is a great feature that lets that happen.

I just got my Tiger I to elite status, so my Tiger II is only... 1.8 million credits away and I will probably end up shelling out the cash to help me get it sooner (and I think Wargaming earned it). I have seen some of the awesomeness of the late french tier but OMG the low tiers are bad. Compared to the USSR and German low tiers it is like poking my eye with a fork waiting for my tank to even get to a battle. Then when I get there all I hear is "That one bounced" over and over!

Any epic stories? I got the Kolobonov Medal for standing alone against 6 enemies and winning. I was in my Tiger as the top tier tank and went out for battle while a flank got overrun hard, I ran back to try and defend while the rest of my team died and took out 3 enemies while they were trying to cap, ran into two more who were trying to rush to the cap point to help (too late) and had my 1 on 1 duel with an afk tank at their base So I got Invader, Top Gun, Steel Wall I think, and the Kolobanov. It was a nice day.

Congrats on the Kolobonov's! That's the type of thing that makes this game a blast.

Last night I was in Lakeville with my E8. I went city and took out a AMX 13 when our whole valley push was wiped out. We only had a KV5 holding off their whole attack. So, being fast I took off to help defend the flag, I got there just in time to take up a flanking position on them. While they concentrated on the KV5 I pounded 'em. I managed to take out a Lowe, KV and a T-34-85, while he took out a couple more, then we swept (well *I* swept, he crawled LOL) up the valley to take their flag. It was awesome and a great example of how a lower tier tank can swing an entire battle.

Here's another one from a while ago that was the best score I've ever had:

Victory!
Battle: Malinovka Wednesday, February 22, 2012 2:52:31 PM
Vehicle: Type 59
Experience received: 2,163
Credits received: 137,947
Battle Achievements: Sniper

In this one I ran up the hill by myself and took up a hull down position overlooking the church and then proceeded to wipe out their entire flank. There is no better non-U.S. tank from a hull down position than the Type 59. After I finished with them I charged down the hill and took out their arty.

If you are grinding credits I can't recommend getting a tier 8 premium tank enough. I have most of them, the Lowe is superb (great gun) and the KV5 is a blast (great armor). If you get one you'll never have $$$ problems again and the free xp helps to automatically upgrade new tanks, so you'll have no more stock pains. They're expensive though, so if you don't want to spend that much you can get the Churchill, it's tier 5, but gets pretty a good roll with MM.

Also, going premium is the only reasonable way to go past tier 6, otherwise you have to grind too much. I don't mind giving them money, they have a great game and I want to support them.

O.o $137,947 credits in one battle?!?!

I have debated going premium a few times, but I sometimes get locked into a cycle of guilt if I have a time limit on something I paid for. I tried to approach my Tiger with a sense of contentment for where I was at while at the same time keeping my wallet out of arms reach.

OMG, those Type 59's drive me crazy. It could just be "sour grapes" but I feel they're pretty OP. Those AMX (mostly the 13's) are also a thorn in my side.

On the EU server (many of my WoT friends are Euros) I spend most of my time in a T-34-85 (grinding for better gear and crew XP). I also have a PanzerJaeger and a Hummel that I jump into occasionally, both only have the next tank in line to grind XP on, so no real "shiny on the horizon".

It isn't sour grapes, at one time they were massively OP. They've scaled them back since then and quit selling them (in NA) so there aren't 5+ Types in a battle anymore. They can still seem OP now because it's usually an experienced player driving them. Gold tanks are inferior to the xp tanks at the same tier, each one has a glaring flaw that can be exploited. The Type 59's is the cupola, treads and the bar across the front, they also take module damage like crazy so you can shoot for the turret ring or gun and it will often cause serious problems.

I love my T-34-85! It's a blast compared to the T-34-76 that's for sure, I could never fall in love with that one.

Trying out the Tier II vehicles right now before moving on to the Tier IIIs, not sure which I want to go for. I normally hang back and snipe, since having a Tier II vehicle brawling with Tier III and IV doesn't work very well. I did snag the AMX 38 after trying to kill them repeatedly, and only succeeding when we mass 3 or 4 tanks on them at once, but my AMX seems to mostly go up against Tier IV and V tanks, which squish it. Matchmaking seems a bit screwed up, I've had too many Tier III/IV/V fights where I bounce half my ammo off a target, failed to damage it (therefor getting no credit at score time) and have it one shot me with ease. Rolling up to a M3 Lee in a T18, bounce, then hit him for 25%, then die to one shot, that's normal. And frustrating.

Been having fun with the BT-2, its the only tank I go on mad rushes with. Taking it through the far side of the map and back out again is fun, on the Tier I/II fights. Had half the enemy team chasing around the map more than once. Switching from the highest penetration (but slow firing) gun over to the best autocannon has led to some funny kills. I'll rush to the far side of the map, swing into their starting area, run up behind someone focused on firing at my team and pause just long enough to empty the twenty rounds in the magazine. At point blank range, full stop, it tends to gut most Tier I/II targets. Then I rush off again, while the painfully slow reload happens.

New patch!

Crew skills are actually demonstrative of what role they are, like a gunner increasing the chance of a critical hit on an enemy module or a commander seeing if a friendly is sighted by an enemy. Right now I think the extra view distance is what I am going to max out first. There are some other changes in the patch and a couple new maps that I haven't tried yet.

This is sadly the case through much of the earlier tiers. The way I invited my friend to play with me was: "You want to blow up?" Every tier you go up you have a better chance of getting matched with people below you though, and those games you get to be the one to one shot everyone else But even at tier VII I am the low man on the totem poll from time to time. I was playing the faster light tanks in lower tiers because they can actually fill a role by going fast into the enemy, scouting, and then dying. I even had some heroic moments where I got to destroy the enemy artillery before I blew up. It is a boon that this game lets you jump ship and start a new game as soon as you get destroyed.

If anyone is still playing add armedbushido to your contacts...

Played a couple of times at PAX, really like it. They gave me some codes for free gold and premium time ; will be checking it out soon.

Installed this yesterday and made an account; messed up using my free codes and didn't get the free gold but did get 30 days of Prem time. Played for 4 hours last night with two of my friends. and had a blast.

Please tell me the Tank Destroyers get better. All three of us are in the Tier 2-3 range; and I'm trying to go with TD exclusively. We are getting matched with tier 2 thru 5's (usually 4 Tier5's) and I can't seem to kill anyone; I've run Rus, Ger, USA TD's to the 2nd tier. I'm trying to focus on USA so I can get a TD with turret and, I have a great love for the Hellcat. Can anyone give me some pointers on playing TD's? I know not to run out into the main battle but, if I sit back I never seem to get any action or get taken out my SPG's. Lastly should I be running AP or HE rounds; I usually have my load out at 80%-AP/20%-HE and use my HE's first.

Can you buy two of the same tank, so if one is destroyed in battle you can start another round with the 2nd one and keep getting XP? I know the crews would be different but that doesn't bother me.

Doh! Double post! Phone internet fail!

I don't have much experience with TDs because I disliked thier early tiers and mostly non-turret playstyle, but I can comment on the ammo type. The thing to look at is armor pen rating on AP rounds because they are more of a pass/fail shot. For HE rounds you can do damage to armor you would normally not be able to pen because it is more percentage based. As a general rule, if the tank is lower tier or is up to slightly above your tier but exposing its sides or back, then use AP and if the tank is higher tiered and has its heavy armor bouncing your shots, go for HE. Sometimes it just depends on the gun though, where it is more efficient to utilize a 500dmg HE instead if a 100dmg AP. Of course, learning about what tank you are attacking and where its weak spots are is part of the fun.

As far as two tanks of the same type, I honestly have never tried looking into that. I dont think so, but hey, let me know if you can!

SPGs you beat by move&shoot. Sit in the same place firing, and they can see and bombard you. So, shoot, pull back, move to a different hide and snipe, rinse, repeat.

Make sure you understand this chart.

Because you are a TD, you will be weighted higher than the same tier tank. So, platoon with your buddies in their tier II tanks, and you drag them into a higher tier fight.

At first, you won't be getting many kills, and not against tier IV or V units. You just don't have the skills, crew skills or equipment for it. Research bigger guns, longer ranged radio, buy a camo net, invest in 75% skill crew, while you die a lot. A lot. Its 'normal' for this game. Which is a shame, cause it kills a lot of the fun.

Have your friends learn to scout, and work as a team. They move up, you follow at a distance, they find a target and dodge a lot while you snipe it down. Move, rinse, repeat.

At the lower tiers, don't worry about HE rounds. They won't do that much more damage, or have that much more effect. Carry a few, sure, but use the AP normally. When taking your T18 up against a KV, for example, you might want to try the HE, but my advice is don't bother, leave and find something you can hurt. Or, and this is the best way for you to fight right now: track the bastage. You might not be able to 'pen' the turret or hull, but odds are you can damage the tracks. Its a really useful skill, and most people don't. But then most people aren't too bright, either. I take down higher tier tanks/TDs in my 'derp' KV by this tactic, track and duck and reload and rinse and repeat. Nothing funnier than having a TD lining up a shot on me, I track him, and the TD skids, skewing around so he can't aim at me.

You might post a replay, we could watch that and maybe toss out some useful specific advice.

I'm currently playing as well, getting up there in tiers, so if anyone is still playing, my name is Biacksheep

For the U.S. line get used to getting hit hard. Most U.S. TD's don't have much armor to begin with, but stick with it, U.S. are my favorite TD's. It gets great around the M8A1 (T4), then the M10 (T5) is good too and the M18 (T6) is pure TD heaven. On the T18 and M82, you should use the 57mm for the most part. It's high penetration/low damage, but you should be able to pen the sides of most tier 5 you run into. Once, you get comfortable with the 57mm you can think about using the big derp guns they have, but those require more finesse and skill to use properly becasue they aren't that accurate and have long load times.

A tactic you should be using is ambushing your enemies. Sit behind a bush and snipe with your 57mm. Best of all, find hiding spots that have 2 bushes lined up in front of you, this will help you be invisible and let you shoot at the enemy without being seen. My best games as TD happen when I'm engaging the enemy at the maximum effective distance of my gun.

Although its rare to do in low tier tanks, because you don't play them that long, is to train your crew in camoflage once they reach 100% skill level. Also, spend the 50,000 credits for a camo net. This will also help you remain invisible.

Keep about 6 HE in your tank and use it only when facing down a high tier heavy you can't pen any other way. But, if you study where the weak spots are on each type of tank and only shoot there you'll find you won't need much HE. It just takes practice. A rule of thumb is any hatch or vision slit is a weakspot, when in doubt try shooting there. Also, any tank with a hull gun mount can be penned at the gun pretty easy, you can take out B1's with ease if you focus your fire there.

Is that i a typo?

Thanks for all the advice guys. I finally unlock the T8A1 and I'm in love. Put the 75mm Howitzer on there and I nom nom-ed fools all night with HE rounds. Got my highest streak of a 3, that was right after a round with my old personal best of 2. Having the turret made a world of difference to me.

My one buddy is rocking med and heavy tanks and, my other friend found he is best with arty. Arty covers us while we move up; I stay just behind the other guy as we slowly work the edges. Just before I logged tonight I unlocked the 75mm AT gun for the T8A1 but, didn't get a chance to use it yet. I was getting good at sniping with the 75 Howey; hopefully the 75 AT is as effective.

With premium accounts can you have a platoon with more the 3 people in it?

If you have three, then someone has to have a premium account. Max two in the platoon for free players.

Right but, can you have more than 3?

Free, 2. Premium, 3. That's it. Can't have more than 3 in a platoon. Which is good, because its already annoying when you see some idiots rolling in a platoon of one tier IX and two tier I tanks, to game the system. When the smallest tank is a KV, a MS-1 isn't even a speed bump.

I second that, especially when that moron in the Tier1 tank shoots one of our ISes in the butt repeatedly and then gets shot, starting a self-destruct right there on the point.
