2) The Xbox patch actually drops
3) I can actually get past the tutorial race

The patch came out last night around midnight PST and it seems like it fixed the "launching session" bug at the tutorial race for most people. Considering you only need to finish the race, not win it, then #2 and #3 shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Meh, its starting to seem like its just a deathmatch with a giant map where you are penalized for getting killed. All anyone seems to do is run around killing each other. The death penalty is idiotic, its impossible to accumulate any kind of cash with pubbies killing you randomly.

It really seems to depend on the group of players you're with- the first game I joined yesterday pretty much was a giant free-for-all, but I joined another game later last night where everyone was working together on missions and activities.

As for money- as soon as you get any, find a safe spot and deposit it in your savings either at an ATM or through the Maze Bank website. When you die you drop a sizeable amount of cash from your "pocket" but money in the bank is always safe from other players.

This hasn't been my experience much at all.
There has been some random pvp violence, but the vast majority for me has been funny shenanigans with a friend online and random pubbies, in and out of mission, races and death match. (I'm on PS3).
I've had heaps of random groups form, sometimes of up to four people and we've been knocking over stores, haven't had anyone turn on me doing that either which is a surprise.
I'm still wondering if there is more to do in the free play beside holding up stores. The missions need to get more interesting pretty quickly or I'll be done with it in a week. Wondering at what level if at all we get to do some more complicated multiple stage heist type missions. I'm at level 11 now.

Had server issues last night and couldn't get on for three hours so I just went to bed. Might have another whirl now to see if they're up.

Edit, also yeah, I've not encountered losing much money, always put it away first thing, the only thing I've found having it in the bank blocks you from buying is from vending machines. So no big deal.

If you find a group of four to play with in an invite only server, it becomes a far more enjoyable experience. Perhaps one of the best I've ever had online, despite its launch bugs.

Good lord, just realized every death costs you money. Both in and out of missions. That sucks quite hard. Presumably I'll one day be rich, like in the single player, but it's a pain in the ass to save for something at rank 5 when I regularly get killed by some random fool in a helicopter. Guess I will have to switch to private sessions for a bit.

Glad to hear it's working now. I've just been waiting instead of annoying myself with it. I'll hop on today and give it a go.

Some great tips in this article. I've heard a couple people mention the need to exit the session properly to ensure recent data is saved.

When it’s time to log off
Press start, select GTA Online and select “Leave.” That’ll make a hard save of wherever you are. Just quitting out can sometimes result in a loss of recent data that hasn’t yet been autosaved. 1

Bought a six car garage, been saving for that for a while, and skipping on buying a smaller garage or house to go bigger, earlier.

My tip for revenue raising, you can only sell one car per in game day at the customs shop, there are usually Baller SUVs near the LS Customs shop on the north north west side of the city, they net about $9,000. So just do that whenever you log in and every so often.
I'm level 13 and 9 grand is still a sweet load of money, so this may be a routine for me for a while.

Also, had a ten grand bounty on me from stealing an NPC super car, there was nobody in my session at that point (not sure why, been having intermittent periods where I'm dumped in an empty server (maybe because I'm in Australia?) so I took off to the top of Mount Chilliad and bunkered down in a sweet position, slowly people started repopulating my server so I just hung out on the mountaintop, nobody bothered trekking all the way out for the bounty, so I just chatted to folks on mic and waiting out a full in game day and BOOM, won myself the ten grand bounty myself. Pretty sweet all in all.

Still having some fun, I'm in the PS GWJ crew, name is Mocsausage. Hoping the missions get more interesting a little quicker and the money a bit easier to get. All the decent cars cost over $100,000, and I need them, AND what level until I can fly planes?

Gonna start an online character. GWJ Grenn on XBox if anyone wants to friend me up.

Wow, I just logged in to make sure the garage I bought Friday night was still there post-patch, and not only is it gone... my entire character is gone! Tabula Rasa, baby.

Sure hope they fix that...

EDIT: Okay, looks like he's back. Just rebooted twice and looks like everything is good, garage and all. Whew!

EDIT: I'm having a much harder time getting online since the patch. I keep getting the "cloud servers unavailable" message.

I had a super fun session earlier today with a fellow crew member named TommyTrojan2000. (I think that was his name.) We did a lot of races and deathmatches. Also a fun round of Hippy Hunting. (I call that one 'Steal The Weed').

Doing races and deathmatches really helps you level up and acquire money quickly. Unfortunately it seems like the invite function isn't working very well. Hopefully that gets fixed in the near future.

My Xbox gamer tag is Rawk 999 (with a space between k and 9)

OK, here goes - four days of not getting past the tutorial race, hopefully wiped out by one patch. Signing on to Xbox now! (it's just after midnight here in Chicago... where are all the West Coast Goodjers?)

UPDATE: Yes! I got in! And within minutes of completing the tutorial mission, I'm in a session with a friend, watching his Lamborghini get carried away by a Cargoboy. It was worth staying up until 4:30am!

Finally got in on the weekend. I'm still getting over how much stuff there is in the single player game and the multiplayer seems just as action packed.
Had some great 16 car super races round Los Santos. Absolute carnage at the start as everyone tries to run each other off the road and nudge competitors into waiting telegraph poles. Found myself laughing out loud at the sheer craziness on a number of occasions. Actually managed to win a couple of races!

Only problem I did have was on Friday night just after the patch. I was in a public mission with a few others when it froze on me. After waiting 10 minutes (just in case the server sprang back to life) I was forced to reboot the xbox and when I rejoined I was given a warning about leaving a mission early and being a 'bad sport'. I like the idea of forcing bad sports to play with one another but I hope there is some leniency during the first couple of weeks while they sort out the teething problems.

Played over the weekend. Still need to figure out all the options. Mostly, how does one play with friends (instead of constantly sending invites)? It seemed like there should be a more straightforward option.

Missing characters occurs when you have trouble contacting R*'s cloud servers upon log in. They *should* reappear eventually unless you make a new character in the same slot. Either make a new character in an unused character slot or try relogging a few times.

Yay! Rockstar has updated their Social Club website, and added a "missing manual" for Online:

The Crew pages also include crew stats and leaderboards now for all the Crew Members in a new "GTA Online" tab. Although I think some of the data is messed up because there is no way I'm number one at Team Deathmatch and Darts in the GWJ crew!

Generally interested, but not interested in racing or fighting over territories in team deathmatch. Am I stuck just playing tennis otherwise?

You can rob stores!

I tend to do a lot of co-op package retrieving stuff. I also hope to one day successfully land a skydive.

You can pursue Auto Theft, and make several Grand.

The 5-0 doesn't take kindly to armed robbery. Or so I've learned.

There are other types of missions, mostly along the lines of "go there, steal that, return while being shot at" or "go there, blow up x amount of stuff." There are also a lot of activities that aren't terribly obvious, such as the aforementioned robbery, stealing cars for cash and bounty hunting. There have been promises of more complex missions and heists being added at a later date, but who knows when that will happen.

I logged in two days ago and my level 30 character was gone. Vanished. Kaput. All her work and in-game property gone. Did everything I could think of to get her back, to no avail. The cloud ate her.

The only thing I had to show for all my time was the $280,000 I had in the bank, all my race losses (gee, thanks), and the Three-Bit Gangster achievement. Everything else went *thpppppppbt* right out the window.

As this seems pretty widespread, I'd recommend not getting too attached to your characters and possessions until R* gets things fixed.

Joined a mission, jumped into someone else's car, and while they drove me across the map, I took care of my banking on my phone. I find this excessively funny.

I did the exact same thing, with the same reaction!

Kurrelgyre - there's a lot of co-op missions in addition to deathmatches and races. Lots more missions open up as you level up, by the time you hit level 10, you can attack gang hideouts, rob armored trucks, hold off waves of attackers in various locations, rob liquor stores and convenience marts, etc.

I jumped into a friends car, noticed I was out of SMG ammo, and asked him to drop me by ammunation. (Kind of funny). Then he drove me to his appartment. We had some beers. And before I knew it we were in the shower together.

True story.

I want to change my Gamertag to GWJ Rawk. Does anyone know if this is against the community rules? I promise that I never grieve people or behave inappropriately. The worst thing you could say about me is that I'm terrible at deathmatches.

Tried to make a wiener bomber emblem but it just doesn't show up.

*edit* Shows up now yay! Needs work still though.

Team deathmatch is a great way to pick up weapons before you normally unlock access to them in Ammunation. I suggest joining just to pick up the micro smg when first starting out, having it in free mode puts you at a significant advantage at lower ranks when most people are still running around Los Santos with pistols.
