Xbox One Catch-all

Square Enix is going to start releasing some of their back catalog of games for Xbox One. Games they have mentioned specifically are Final Fantasy VII, IX, X, X-2, XII, and World of Final Fantasy Maxima. X, X-2, and XII will be based on the remastered versions. I am actually excited for FFXII as I feel I never put enough time into it thanks to getting an Xbox 360 right around when it came out and getting lost in Oblivion for a few hundred hours.

There was a time when people would have been blown away by this news. At this point in the development of video games, I'm just nodding my head and saying "Yep, makes sense."

It particularly makes sense to do it on Xbox, which has the best chance of sticking with backwards compatibility, meaning that these games would remain available for a long time.

I am just amazed it took this long to come around. I mean sure the Xbox One isn't selling as well as the PS4 or the Switch, but it has still sold millions of units. I know that there are plenty of people with multiple current gen consoles, but there are probably still millions of people who only have an Xbox One like me. I hope they sell good enough that Square Enix brings more stuff over like Dragon Quest and some of the older FF games. Even though I do have a Super NT and working copies of all of Square's SNES games I would be much more likely to play them again if they were on Xbox One with Achievements

So I went and did the Xbox All Access thing and got the One X. One tip if you are going to do that is to go ahead and get approved for the Dell Preferred Account before going to the store. You can do it in the store and it is pretty painless, but you can get in and out quicker by doing it ahead of time. I think I am going to give my old Xbox One and the codes for Xbox Live and Game Pass to my brother. His birthday is at the end of the month and the only gaming systems he has are a Wii and a Raspberry Pi (which I gave him last year with Retro Pi setup on it). He was a big fan of the Halo games back in the day though and I think his kids would dig playing Kinect games.

So this could be very interesting. M/K support on the Xbox opens up a whole new world of possibilities should developers wish to implement it. It also opens the console up to games that simply would not work with a controller. If developers support this (and MS is smart about approaching some current PC only dev shops... think RTS / 4x titles) it could go a long way towards the mesh of PC and Console.

I am looking forward to seeing how it works and which devs choose to use it.

Between this and Doom being on gamepass I am pretty darn happy with this service

Link doesn't work for me, here's a different one. Wolfenstein, Forza Horizon 4, and Metro 2033: Redux this month? Yeah, I'd say that's a solid offering, to put it mildly.

If/when we get m/k support I'll dive into more shooters, I'm just terrible with them via controller after so many years on pc. That said, gamepass has been the best thing to happen to gaming since well, ever. I jumped on the 6 month deal over the summer, but it's easily worth full price. Nice mix of new and retro games.

I felt that way.. then a friend made me play Halo with him for a bit, then later CoD: MW2. I can't stand playing shooters with m&k anymore lol.

It's like that saying goes: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, and you miss 50% of the shots you take with a controller."

..unless you git gud

I think it's great that Xbox is finally doing this, even though I feel no desire to use a mouse and keyboard. Who knows what the future holds, though.

I do want them to silo players by input type in competitive matches.

Since I already miss 50% of the shots with m/k, that means with a controller I'd drop down to...barely above not taking a shot at all haha.

It's still up to developers to support mouse and keyboard controls, right? I'm not sure I'd get my hopes up for PC-style controls in console games. The PS4 has had mouse and keyboard support from the beginning, for instance, and I can think of only one game that actually supports them.

M/K is clearly more precise, and I hate it. I'd rather be equally limited with everyone else by using the same controller. Any game that mixes M/K and controller players together is a game I wouldn't buy.

There was as statement somewhere where Microsoft said it would actively encourage developers to separate players by control type. I would way rather have it supported with an official separation than the way it is now. There are tons of PUBG players that use the XIM adapters and it is just annoying.

In a perfect world I would be able to jump on PC or Xbox and cross-play with players of either group all using the same control type.

Too bad that because of expensive peripherals, we already have people using M/K on games that are "supposedly" controller only.

I dunno, when I watch my kids -who grew up almost exclusively using controllers- pull off sick moves I think they'd suffer switching to m/k. In the Destiny 1 days, I'd ask them to help me with a boss battle. The first thing they did was turn the aim sensitivity all the way up, then they'd be shuckin' & jivin' all over the place, whaling on the bosses effortlessly. I quit Destiny soon after that.

Haha well said. My nephew is totally crazy good with shooters, whether he's playing with a controller or M&K. For M&K though, he has a HUGE mousing surface and keeps his mouse sensitivity very low, while flailing his arm all over the place very quickly. Oddly, he doesn't crank up his sensitivity that much on controllers.

Kids have a lot of practice time but it doesn't mean it isn't easier to get good with a mouse than a controller for FPS games. Mice also have the advantage of being able to stop on a dime. A controller analog stick has to pass all the positions in between so there is a wind down effect which often causes people to overshoot which is why "sticky aim" and "aim assist" were developed in the first place. Blizzard has even made statements regarding these adapters.

Been messing around with the Xbox One X Enhanced games on my new box and so far I think Oblivion is the most impressive looking upgrade I have seen. Fallout 3 was nice but the art style of that game just doesn't show it off the way having trees load in the distance does in Oblivion. Makes me think more console games need to start supporting mods as we move into a fully backward compatible console future like MS has been talking about. If not full mods then at least the ability to tweak configuration files to get more out of newer hardware.

Have you seen RDR yet? I think it looks fantastic on my X1X, but I don't have a 4k TV.

I haven't gotten to that one yet.

Anyone ever done a service request on an xbox at the microsoft store? My scorpio sounds like a jet engine and I want it fixed prior to RDR2. I have had xboxes fixed by mailing in multiple times but never done in store. Thoughts? Experiences?

Have not personally, but I did see some people mention bringing in their Elite controller to a Microsoft Store to get fixed, and they actually just gave them a new controller. Plan on brining mine in this week. Been going with the controllers that came with my S or X while eating for a new Elite to get announced. But after playing some FH4, I think I want an Elite sooner than later now.

Microsoft, in my experience, has been pretty great about customer service, and going to a store might be a good way to get a problem solved. But, like you, my only experience with consoles is mailing it in. But I think I would consider giving the store a try next time.

Ok cool, thanks for the response. Maybe will try it tomorrow/tonight.

A local friend brought his in because it wasn't reading discs (under a year old). They grabbed a new one off the shelf and swapped it without any hassle.

I'd add that the CEO's attempts to change the MSFT culture (notoriously fear-based) toward a more modern approach is paying dividends in how consumers are treated.

Clocky,

Your avatar is super dope! I know you drew that. Or painted. Or whatever the cool artists are doing these days.

It’s a reference to Bleach, right? The anime or manga.

Amazing!

Sadly, I didn't draw it or paint it or shoop it or whatever cool, talented people do. I stole it like an everyday normie. It's from an artist on Twitter and was part of that whole Bowsette craze. This particular character is Princess Peach crossed with a Chain Chomp.

So Kotaku is reporting that Microsoft is buying Obsidian. MS has some IP that might be awesome in Obsidian's hands with a decent budget. Shadowrun for instance.
