Xbox One Catch-all

I'd be shocked if Dolby Vision "wins" as it carries a fee to implement whereas HDR-10 doesn't. DV certainly has better theoretical specs to make it a superior implementation of HDR but the number of TV's on the market or near to market that would actually take advantage of that theoretical difference is zero.

In 5-6 years it might matter but by then TV's purchased today won't have the technology to take advantage of it. Just like HDMI 2.1 when it's fully realized in TV's and then consoles (I guess next gen refresh)?

FWIW so would I for the same reasons. It's just the one potentially bad scenario I could envision for people who bought HDR-10 only sets.

My TV supports DV but the only way for me to watch any Dolby Vision content is the built in TV apps and the only one of those with DV content is Netflix. And all their HDR content is also watchable in HDR-10 anyway. All my playback devices only support HDR-10. My 4k Blu ray player, the shield TV, etc. The PS4 Pro and Xbox One S both put out HDR-10.

One format clearly has the momentum.

Extremely early notice: The MS conference at E3 this year will be Sunday, June 11 at 2pm PST.

I'm guessing they're getting this out there early so journos can plan to be there in time. I like the prospect of not having to watch from work, as long as no family obligation pops up.

I'm guessing they kinda have to show of Scorpio no?

Yeah, the Reddit speculation was that they wanted Scorpio to dominate the news Monday morning / afternoon.

It's interesting to note that some games are seeing gains on PS4 Pro, but because the CPU is basically the same, some are not. Improving Bloodborne was their best chance to sell me one, but it's apparently CPU limited.

I'm very much planning on Scorpio, as the Xbox is my main console. Here's hoping for $500 or less.

You didn't see the comparison videos of Bloodborne with Boost mode and without? I was briefly tempted by a PS4 Pro just for that.

The one I saw loaded one second faster and didn't seem to affect framerates. Have you seen something better?

I don think there are any 1080p TV's that support the HDR color standards so HDR and 4k are kind of twisted together by default.

Although there are plenty of 4k TV's that won't do HDR. Because nothing can ever be straightforward

It gets even better. HDR support doesn't always mean the set actually supports a properly wide color gamut. In terms of marketing it means little beyond it can take the signal, and makes no assurances about the display lag when doing it.

Sony announced some 1080P HDR sets for 2017... how good they are is anyone's guess though

Sure looks like it.

Free play weekend for Rocket League.

I really need to buy it, I didn't realize it was this much fun!

I am shocked to hear that someone hasn't received the gospel of Rocket League already. Literally everyone needs to at least try this amazing game. I have no idea how many hundreds of hours I've logged between PS4 and XB1.

My wife tells me I'm a little slow

Every time I ran across it I was playing something else (Destiny, Elite Dangerous, D3) and never gave it a fair shake. Right now, I'm really in between games - burned out on Destiny and ED, tired of D3 and Warframe with Halo Wars 2 unlocking tomorrow I figured what the hell.

Whoops. Now how am I going to find time to play Halo Wars 2?

Rocket League and Destiny are undoubtedly my two most-played games on XB1.

Fedaykin98 wrote:

Heh. I think Destiny, Warframe and ED are really close. I'd have to go look.

Sadly, I won't be able to buy Rocket League until I get a job ( hopefully next week, but I'm not going to count my chickens before they're hatched) so I'm going to play the sh*t out of it while I can!

Any thoughts on Gears of War 4?

So I have a weird issue with the elite controller that I have never had with another controller. The rubberized grips have started to smell like..... musk. And before you judge I'm a super germaphobe and wash my hands like 50 times a day! I don't eat snacks while playing games and use my OG controller when on the exercise bike (And that one doesn't smell). Wiping down with Lisol wipes helps temporarily but I think the rubber might be porous so it comes back. Not really sure what else to do. Anyone else notice this?

I thought it was OK but lost some of the craziness that made the other Gears games stand out. However, all Gears games seem to be designed for co-op and are at their best when played with a partner.

No, and I'm also a super germaphobe who washes his hands like 50 times a day! However, my hands are (probably as a result) very dry.

Yeah, my hands are super dry to the point I have to moisturize, to keep them from cracking, but on occasion in an intense Rocket League match might make the palms a little sweaty.

Edit: I think I may have found a solution. And it makes me feel better (slightly) that I'm not the only one!

Second review
"If you spend a good bit of time gaming and use an Xbox One Elite Controller, you might notice that the rubberized finish on the grips of the device absorb odors. My hands do not sweat much while playing video games, nor do I eat during sessions or otherwise expose my controller to dirt/grime/oils/etc. I also generally wash my hands before gaming. Still, after 100 or so hours of stomping serfs into the devastated Frontier soil in Titanfall*, my controller was getting noticeably funky."

Some cool updates on Xbox Exclusives coming this year, including Crackdown 3 and Sea of Thieves.

Sounds like they told Larry to slow it down a bit on his pacing.

As a late to the party Xbox One owner, any XBO console exclusives I should keep an eye out for? I have Ori (which is amazing) and have Recore and Sunset Overdrive wishlisted. Superhot looks neat and is currently XBO console exclusive. What else?

Do you like arcade golf? Powerstar Golf is fantastic. It's also free for the base game. You can buy all the content for $20, or $6 for each of the 4 expansions.

The Flame in the Flood is a good (and beautiful) survival roguelike.

I really like Astroneer as well, though it's probably more something to keep an eye on for the future as it's an early Game Preview title and doesn't have a ton of content yet (though it's being updated frequently).

(Also, Sunset Overdrive is awesome.)

I downloaded the base game of Powerstar Golf and bought the whole game after a few minutes.

Seeing that golf game makes me wonder if there are any fishing games on Xbox One. I'd love a "Wii Fishing Resort" type game, but I suspect that game is a very rare breed that comes once in a hundred lifetimes!

Not sure if this is why you are looking for.

Quick question on XBox Live Gold Memberships with an XBox One...

Do we need Gold memberships for each of our family members? I have two kids, both of who play online with their own Gold accounts, as well as my own Gold account. But I stumbled onto this article, which makes it seem like all we need is one account for our family if we designate the Xbox One as our home device.

If that's the case, are they any disadvantages to just having the one account?

The Xbox Live subscription is tied to the box, not an individual account; if you go Gold and it's your home box, everyone can connect online with it. It's a family account now.
