Xbox One Catch-all

So, does anyone else have trouble playing BluRay discs in their XB1? I have a brand new disc that is from a small indie outfit, and I am getting an error message saying that I need to put in a BluRay disc. Thing is, they sent a dual BluRay/DVD, and the DVD works fine. But I want HD, dammit!

Eject the disk, insert it again but hold onto it for a second and then let go. Basically make the mechanism fight you for a second.

While I can see AMD allowing this.. Nvidia even if Microsoft builds this into DX12 will block it no matter what.

That's what causes my controller desync issue? Like, controllers disconnecting in the middle of a game?

I've been experiencing that issue with my launch console a bit over the last few months as well.

I also once had the disc read problem, but hard reset fixed the issue. At the time I was concerned that the drive was dying, but it has not occurred again in the last 8 months, so hopefully it was a fluke.

We have 2 launch consoles and never had a controller issue. Did you do the controller firmware updates?

Good catch! I just updated them. We'll see how it goes. Thanks!

Yeah, it's a weird thing to have to remember. When I bought extra controllers I just ran it a couple times on each one to make sure they were up to date. At least now the latest update supposedly makes this process wireless.

What would Nvidia be able to do in order to restrict this? Assuming Microsoft takes the Valve approach to streaming, I don't see an issue. And I've never heard of a graphics vendor not fully supporting Direct X compatibility.

Likewise, I doubt it will be blocked, as such. My only concern is that it would be restricted to Windows-store purchased games, rather than just streaming anything from Win10 -> XB1. I guess we'll wait and see if anything comes of it, but that would be icing on the cake for me.

Trivial to block it at the Nvidia Driver level which Nvidia has sole control over.

I just don't see that happening.

Even if they could, why? Steam already provides streaming to other PCs, and soon to their own custom device.

I would be super, super happy if the XBO becomes a virtual Steam Machine.

Me too. My question is interface. A Steam Link will give me a Steam Big Picture Mode interface that it will boot into automatically. What interface would I be looking at for streaming my PC games from an XB1?

Great question. I could imagine needing to set up a link on your PC and from then on being able to launch a game directly from a PC app on the XB1.

Edit: Or it could just include the game with the rest of your games once you've set it up.

Unless they add something akin to the Non-steam game function - so you'd add selected apps/games to the xbox app that would then be able to stream across..

Either way, it sounds like this is still being discussed rather than anywhere close to a reality. Hopefully we find out more in the coming month or so, even if it just confirms that they are actively trying to implement it with no ETA.

That's probably more likely. I hope they figure out a way to do it with a really nice user experience, but I won't be cancelling my Steam Link preorder at this point.

I already have an Intel NUC as a media centre, doubling as a 'steam machine', but centralising into the One would be a much smoother experience, no doubt.

Hey GWJers!

I've never owned an Xbox console, and I'm thinking of finally taking the plunge. The XBO backwards compatibility will be a nice feature for me since I never played a lot of the 360 hits, and I'll be able to pick up some games on the cheap.

I know of a couple Xbox games I would like to play (Ori, Sunset Overdrive, and Cuphead), but are there any others that I'm currently missing out on as just a PS4 and Wii U owner? I'm not a FPS person, so Halo isn't a big draw for me.

Also since I don't follow Xbox news very much, are there any exclusives or big announcements expected at Gamescom?

Thanks!

I think there were 3 bigger games that were held off from E3 to show at Gamescom. Crackdown, Quantum Break, and something else. They also hinted there was some unannounced stuff.

If you like racing at all check out the Forza series. Forza Horizon 2 for open word arcadey feel or the upcoming Forza 6 for track racing (releases in the fall).

Tried this several times, along with a bunch of other fixes on the interwebz. I think that it's just the fact that the disc looks like a Recordable Blu-Ray of some sort, I am thinking it's simply not going to work. Bummer. Thanks everyone for your suggestions though.

I'm really looking forward to Gamescom next week for these reasons! Come on, fully-realized Crackdown!

Welcome!

I highly recommend getting the EA Access thingy as there's a bunch of good games on there that aren't "free" on PS4.

I'd recommend looking at Forza Horizon.

Smite is worth a look if you've ever wanted to give a MOBA a try.

If you like golf, the latest EA Rolf game, Rory McIlroy, has issues, and I can't recommend it at full price. But Powerstar Golf is a fantastic arcade game that I can't recommend enough.

You can get a limited version, with just one course, for free, but it is easily worth the $20 they ask for the full game.

Epic typo. I want to play Rolf.

Before you start hoovering up cheap 360 games, keep in mind that the backward compatibility is a white list that currently supports a dozen or so indie games and Mass Effect. The full roll-out will support somewhat less than a hundred games (out of 1,200-ish games total). More games will be added, but we don't really know what will be supported or when.

If this is a big selling point for you, I'd take a big wait-and-see approach to it.

Remember also that if you get a Gold subscription, you can get two free X1 games each month. You can also "purchase" the two free 360 games from the website as well, which might be good for when they are backwards compatible. I don't currently see any of my 360 digital games on my X1, but I'm not participating in the preview program and don't have any backwards compatibility yet.

I can't say if any of them are exclusive to the X1/360 though since I'm not good at paying attention to that sort of thing.

Your instincts are correct with Ori. It is spectacular, but a wee difficult through some bits. I had a lovely time playing it; it's a treat for the eyes, ears and thumbs.

Is this how Rolf is played:

Most/all titles will be compatible, but not all of them will be allowed depending on the publisher (maybe they want to do a Remaster instead, etc.).

Thanks for tips!
I had a friend just caution me on the backward compatibility. I knew there would be limitations in selection, I just didn't realize how much it was limited. I think I'll hold off on a secondary console for now. I'll probably still pick one up at some point, but the money has ceased burning a hole in my pocket.

PS- you good folks have just saved me from hours of side eye from my GF!

Yeah, if backwards compatibility is the driving force, then I would definitely wait for it to go live, then see if the games you would want will be available. I don't think it will be all that limited, and they said about 100 games would be out by the end of the year.

I expect several hundred games when it is all said and done, but I would not assume anything.

The quality of the backwards compatibility is also still to be determined. I'm excited about the feature, but I don't think it's a selling point until there are games on the list that people really want to play, and reports that they run well.
