Xbox One Catch-all

Pages

I thought this might be a better catch-all than the Day One thread. We can kill this one if not.

That still seems very gimmicky to me. Also, extremely annoying if you have kids/pets. I don't plan on thrashing around on my couch to get an imaginary zombie off of me.

I do hope they do something interesting with it though.

I agree. But I'm sure you can toggle off Kinect inputs in every game when it is used like that.

My thought on Kinect is that it should have always been more of an extra thing to do while you have controller in your hand, not be the controller. With bigger pipes to transmit date to the console with a dedicated connection, much higher resolution camera and better voice recognition, developers might find more ways to immerse you into the game in the same way force feedback works.

Fingers crossed. I'd love to see implementation that feels like an extension of the game experience, not something forced in.

Plus, with how often my wife tries to talk to me when I'm playing a game, I'd be zombie food pretty easily.

I preordered the Day One edition, but I hope they fixed some of the Kinect stuff.

The problem I have when using the current Kinect is when my dog enters the room. Sometimes it's funny when you play Kinect Party and birds land or poop on him.

Other times, it's frustrating.

The Verge had good article on the new ways Kinect is being used outside of jumping around and waving your arms.

Don't flinch: the new Kinect could be the end of motion gimmicks

In Dead Rising 3, an open-world zombie game that seems to be part Grand Theft Auto and part Kingdom Rush, your controller is once again your friend. Your Kinect might be your enemy. Zombies can hear you talking, even rustling on your couch, and they'll come after you. (Prepare to play Dead Rising 3 in the quietest room you can find.) Once they find you, if you wriggle on your couch as you presumably would if a zombie were attempting to eat your entire face all at once, you'll wriggle the zombie off you. The controller stays in your hands, but as you react to the game, the game reacts to you.

It's day one for me, too.

I actually don't get the press swooning over the PS4. Used games are fine I suppose, but a console is only as good as its game selection, and the PS4 only has six exclusives. Of those only two (Killzone and Infamous) are all that interesting right now. I think that unless Sony unwraps some surprise launch titles, a lot of people are going to come around to the One because hey - cool games are what it's all about.

I pre-ordered the Day One from Amazon, but will probably switch to GameStop once they have more in.

I've never cared for the PlayStation, and I can't stand its controller.

I actually put an order in at the Microsoft Store. I may still cancel it and wait 6-12 months for the library to build up. There are a lot of games still coming to the 360, including NCAA 14 and NHL 14 that will not be on the XB1.

Speaking of XB1, what's everyone's favorite shortcut. I'm not a fan of Xbone, but but I've seen XBO and XB1 used. I suspect that microsoft will drop the One sooner or later. Apparently the console itself just says Xbox.

I don't like Xbone. It makes gamers sound like a bunch of 14-year-old dickwads, IMO.

I prefer to call it the XBO, or if just the One, so long as everyone knows you're talking about consoles.

I like the shortest "XO". Because everybody knows Live is all hugs and kisses.

(And it's short)

One will always remind me of Metallica.

Grrrrr. Damn you, EA!

I'm wondering where the ideal location for the X1 would be in our house - we primarily watch TV (especially sports) in the living room, but game in the gameroom. The TV features would make it quite useful in the living room, but that would mean no gaming when wife/kiddo are watching TV. Will probably start off with it in the gameroom, but the TV features could help with the Wife Acceptance Factor.

Buy two of them.

I still suspect a media version will get released in a year or two in a smaller case. Maybe it will be housed in a larger Kinect case.

Has there been any additional information around the interface with TV via the HDMI in connection? I'd be curious to know what this will allow and how they'll take advantage of it.

Thing is, none of the exclusives on either side seemed interesting. Which is a matter of genre taste sure. But many in the press seemed to think this too.
There is Forza for the driving fans. And that is about it.

Likely some of the coming exclusives will be interesting when they start to show more than meaningless trailers. Just not yet.

I think I'm going Bone. I'm definitely going to keep saying "Bone" until Certis gives me a time-out, because it's hilarious.

There's not a Sony exclusive I want that is coming anytime soon, and I not only want Titanfall, I want to play it, next Spring, on the successor to the Xbox 360, by far the finest online console ever. I want cloud saves that work and dedicated servers. I want the Xbox gamepad.

And I like never having to switch discs.

There are certainly some wonderful uses for the Kinect. I expect we'll still see some early year growing pains as developers try to figure out how to implement voice and gesture commands in a way that makes sense. They'll have worked out some ideas with the Kinect 1, certainly, but having it integrated into the base system is going to inspire a lot of experimentation and gimmickry.

I'll bet you a dollar right now that there's at least one game that makes you wave your hand in front of your face to clear smoke off the screen.

Southpark and farts. You know it.

If I thought I could survive getting two of them right out of the gate, I would've preordered two! My wife begrudgingly accepts the fact that I will have one the day it is available (hell, she camped out with a few of us for the original 360), but if I got two of them on launch she'd probably pull some Game of Thrones type stuff on me!

I agree about the media/all digital version merged in the Kinect case. That would be pretty sweet actually.

One one hand, I don't trade/sell,or buy used games. I have no issue with downloading games (see Steam Library). Over the life of the console, $100 isn't a deal breaker.

On the other hand, with no kids in the house, Kinect needs to do more for me than replace my Directv remote. Also, I do like to rent games I'm not sure about buying so that is a sticking point for me.

The release software for both platforms had hits and misses but neither makes me want to be a first day buyer. I'll wait 6-9 months to see where the dust settles.

As everyone knows the internet can become an echo chamber of craziness, but it seems that the hate for XB1 has gotten to the point were even most of the media is starting to believe the end is near for MS. What really bothers me is PlayStation is just feeding red meat to this segment without offering a step forward with their console, other then being more powerful and streaming to the vita; which is really cool (I don't count cloud streaming thanks to all the latency). While I don't expect more out of the internet, I would like the gaming press to avoid the quick reactions to heads lines without even looking deeper into the facts or just misreporting stuff based on hearsay. Yeah some of the policies toward disks are somewhat anti-consumer, but that stance allows for a more open digital platform, i.e. accessing my games from any platform and allowing my family to do the same with their own login. It's a trade off and you can't have it both ways. I just hope things become more rational sooner then later.

all i want the new kinect to do is no-fuss headtracking and voice commands. If they can get that sh*t down for Forza and FPS shooty games then it might generate more interest in me.

Clearly, you're new to this whole Internet thing....

I know, you're right. Internet = speak first, maybe think later.

I think Microsoft earned the reactions they have gotten. Their reveal strategy was poorly thought out, and they gave Sony all the ammunition they needed for a flu on slaughter at the pressers.

A more reasoned reaction will come over time. But make no mistake, Sony provided a core of gamers exactly what they wanted. Indie games, mandatory use of disc to play games, no motion or camera controls, and a cheaper price won the day fairly.

Indie games are neat, and we certainly have a core at GWJ that love them to death. But I don't think it actually drives sales of consoles. We can mock Minecraft, but it moves consoles. And despite its lack of india love, XBLA has been full of great games.

I love that I can now have a hard drive full of the games my family are currently playing. I love that I can let my brother in Seattle play my copy of a game without sending him a disc, and I can play games he has. I like that if I want to trade in a game, I can do so in a way that might end up getting money back to the publishers. But mostly, I love that Microsoft is creating a truly digital future of games that will actually be more convenient that relying on discs.

The Kinect was a nice introduction to smart voice and motion controls. Some of the games and uses were big whiffs, but others were great, or showed promise if the camera could be improved. My Kinect is always connected right now. I wish it was available for my Tivo, too!

Sony won big on price, but despite the prevailing perception that there is no value that Microsoft adds for their $100 will soon prove to be false. Microsoft does have a better line-up of games, in my opinion. They do have a better way to share games with friends. They do have have more interesting method of recording and sharing live experiences online. Skype integrated into live TV on Saturdays and Sundays for football could be awesome. Oh, and you get a much better controller.

But it's going to take awhile before the internet calms down and realizes that a game console can't actually hurt you.
