I was wondering the same thing! I almost forgot about it until it popped into my head today.

We could start nowish and run it till month end?

That sounds good. Should give me a week to play ME3 multiplayer and then put in at least a few days of The Hunter.

Pro tip: Switch to disruptor ammo take a deer's shields down, and then finish it off with concussive shot or a sticky grenade.

Yeah, let's start now. We'll go until April 2 at noon EST.

EDIT: I'll bang out the rules tomorrow. Quickly: We're doing two different tourneys - One is for the paid version and one is for the free version.

If you're interested in donating prizes, holler.

So like... If you used to be a paid person, and you got grandfathered into Warden status, but are no longer paying for anything... are you free or paid?

We may want to consider a skill-level handicap? I feel that having hours put into your tracking and weapons skills provide an advantage that penalizes new hunters. I mean, in the end it still comes down to being lucky enough to stumble across a buck, but seasoned players have definite advantages beyond just experience.

I can track Mule Deer pretty well, lvl 11, but I figured out pretty much everything I know now by tracking level 4 or 5. If I recall tracking level 3 is when you can distinguish male and female tracks on your huntermate.

We can't segment our hunting groups too much or else the competition won't have enough participants in the groups.

Does shooting skill do anything? I always thought that it was a measure of how much you've fired any particular weapon.

I wondered that, too. I figured if it did anything it would reduce scope sway, but I don't know.

Just noticed on their blog an update about animal vision and detection. Seems they just changed how that works. So since last time, they've added more logical movement and more accurate visual detection by the animals. So things may work a bit differently.

My understanding is that weapon skills affect scope-sway. So at level 5 you can hold aim on target longer than at level 1. Definitely affects at what ranges you can engage your prey and be confident of a hit.

Edit: And to be clear.. I'm not saying breaking the competition into tiers, but adding a skill-modifier for long distance shots... or even just reporting relevant weapon skill level to see if a trend emerges.
I just know that since most of my hunting has been with the starter rifle I can now go for shots 100-200 feet out with confidence that I'll hit what I'm pointing at, but I remember early on that even with a good line and prone I would have to time my shot to the sway.

I had suggested a separate tournament for paid and none paid so that those who had a paid sub could compete for the best kill of something other than Mule Deer.

My suggestion had nothing to do with skill. Besides I think some of our longest shots last competition came from those who were new to the game. Granted the more skill you have with a weapon the easier it is to hold still but the difference isn't that gigantic. I was using a weapon I had almost no skill with last comp and I was still hitting targets from pretty far distances.

I think separating free and paid players is fine, especially if we have prizes for stuff that free players can't hunt. Although I would like to still have a competition between all players with Mule Deer simply because it offers the most participants.

I think one of the other reasons Gaald (or someone else) suggested a split tourney is because the paid peeps had access to better scopes and better weapons, so they had an advantage on the free peeps.

Thus (in accord with Gimpy's suggestion): Let's have two tournaments (as planned), but everyone can participate in the Free Muley Tourney so long as the shot is with the standard rifle and scope. As long as you use the same getup (including the basic deer call and smoke, etc.), you are eligible for competing in the "free" tourney.

That being said, if you use any other gun, your score will be tagged under the "paid" tourney. This way, every shot will only be eligible for one of the tourneys.

Cool?

Cool.

So, it's the weapon you use that determines your participation? Alright, that makes sense.

Nice.

What are the default gun settings again?

.243 Bolt Action Rifle (Wood) with the most basic scope (can't remember the metrics).

I just had my first hunt in over two years yesterday. Nailed a 50 something buck within the first 17 minutes of the hunt. Heard him call on the other side of hill and we were within probably 25 feet of each other as I crested the hill.

Later in the same hunt I jumped a bachelor party at the far end of a clearing. Called in a 189 rating that I dropped first and then tracked 4 of his 5 buddies down over the course of time. Dropped the last one, which was a 115, at 620 feet.

I'm definitely in for the free-play tourney.

Cherish it. They don't come along often.

Those changes seem pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to using treestands now if they're going to be working better.

They worked fine last round with a little patience. My problem was with bad luck of calling in doe and white tails instead of mule buck. I had at one point counted 12 assorted non-scoring deer just loitering around under a stand one time. I'd called them in one or two at a time, and the repeated calling to try to pull in more kept them all wandering around underneath me.

I've never seen a deer while in a treestand before, but I guess that's just my luck.

Sorry, I didn't read properly, this was in a tower not a tree stand.

Time to log in and defend my...

Registered as Maqusan. I'll give it a go.

I only encountered 1 Mule Buck that I had been tracking for at least 2500m. It was originally a pack of 4 I think but by the time I caught up it was only one. I ended up losing the tracks but I heard it's call. As I was getting to the area it was in I crested a hill and was face to face with the buck. I ended my hunt because I was so annoyed that he changed directions after tracking him for so long.

It's good that we have a while to go before the competition ends.
